ABSTRACT

In this modern world, students have adequate access to the

internet but loses interest in books. Therefore, it is crucial
to know and understand the different effects between internet
and books on some aspects such that academic performance,
behavioral pattern, and executive functioning abilities of the
students. The purpose of this study is to provide deeper
insights on what books can do to one’s life This study
determined the significance of books on learning over
modernization. This could be great contributor of knowledge and
awareness for students, community, government, and future
researchers. The process of the study is pertaining to the
methods by which the variables will be collected and
synthesized. This study will undergo a deep observation and
survey to the samples. This will include giving questionnaires
and conducting an interview to the respondents. The collected
data from the said process will be combined together to make a
conclusion in order to come up with a good output. The findings
of the study indicate that inappropriate usage of internet
reduces the critical thinking and comprehension skills of the
learners. Proper access to internet is advisable because it
provides a lot of information, it can help you find whatever
you want, and it is easier to use. However, excessive internet
usage has adverse effects. Internet can make people sick due to
radiation emitted by the gadgets, it reduces the critical
thinking and comprehension skills, and it is addictive. On the
other hand, books help stimulate the brain, it helps to
eliminate stress, it improves the memory and concentration and
it expands the knowledge and skills. But in some cases, reading
books is a boring activity, it is a time waster, it is limited
and much effort are needed.

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Books are the mainframe of learning for every student as

well as their superiors. All the sort of student from primary,
secondary, junior high school and especially the newly
implemented senior high school should be provided with learning
references since they are preparing for college and
professionalism. Every year, the DepEd were producing books for
schools but is not enough to fill in the whole region. Students
that are given the chance to borrow a book for the school year
is the one who is responsible for taking care and maintaining
the good state of it. However, present situation shows that
some students do not take responsibility on their borrowed
books from the schools. It seems like books play no importance
to the students at all and end up losing it.

Genesis Academy is a private school in Camarines Sur that

provide modules and other learning references to the students
Moreover, it isn’t the case, the main point of this
investigation is to make clarification in the importance of
reading materials and how do it affect the learner. To cite, I
gather the information to some students from grade 11 on their
own perspective of the problem since they are also suffering
from inadequate learning textbooks and they are more aware and
related to this chosen case study.

As a Grade 11 student in Genesis Academy, it is huge

problem for them to provide or find information that will
satisfy their works as well as their strand. Information
dissemination is faster with technological advancements.
However, some students from Grade 11 are lack of capacity to
provide themselves with a good internet connection that makes
it hard for them to work continuously. That’s why it’s going to
be a big help for them to have a tangible medium that is
cheaper and more relevant to use. A number of studies lies
investigated the effectiveness of
e-books (electronic books) and p-books (printed books) on
reading performance. They test the comprehension, accuracy and
speed of reading of the sample. A study of Macedo Rouet et al.
(2003) presented findings from 47 undergraduate university
students. The e-book readers get a lower comprehension score
than p-book readers. This means that the impact of the book
also depends on its medium that’s why it is important to
consider the reference that is going to be issued by the school
and the government in order to make a good outcome from the
students.

Early studies show that books play an important role to

the students moreover, it is also important to see the
effectiveness of it to the students. It is important to see how
books alter a student’s life.

In this study, the proponent intend to reveal the perception

of the students regarding the books. And the effective learning

Statement of the Problem

The objective of this timely study is to weigh the
importance and impacts of books. In this research, the
importance and impacts are concentrated on the abrupt change of
learning style of the students and the affiliated modernization
era.

This study aims to pursue the answers to the following

questions:

1. What are the importance of books to students nowadays?

2. Are books still important for students?
3. How does books affect the life of the students?
4. What are the other mediums that affect the learning strategy of
the students?
5. What are the solutions that could help a student remember the
significance of books?

Scope and Delimitation

50 students of Genesis Academy were used as a sample in

conducting the survey.

This study limits its coverage on Grade 11 students only. The

prior intent of this study is to differentiate and determine
the effects between books and internet on student’s life.

This study considers every aspects of students personal

background accordingly, their age, gender, parents, beliefs and
other confidential information.

Significance of Study

The findings of the study may provide deeper

insights on what books can do to one’s life. This study
determined the significance of books on learning over
modernization. This could be a great contributor of knowledge
and awareness for students, community, government, and future
researchers.

To the students, the result will help them on acquiring right

information in books rather than technological modernization
(internet). Also, this will help students to be aware of the
different factors that might influence their interest on
reading books.

To the community, this will support every, members of the

community who doesn’t have the privilege to access
technological advancements.

To the government, this will encourage the government to build

more public libraries in obscure areas for the betterment of
the community.

To the future researchers, this study will help the future

researcher as their basis of their study and additional
literature for their future investigations.

CHAPTER 2

This chapter provides and focuses on gathering comprehensive

information and data on the literature and studies that is
interconnected on the present research study. The researcher
made a review and evaluation of several published and
unpublished works, literature and studies which are closely
related to the present study.

Review of Related Literature

Books play an important role on information dissemination at

a low cost. It is the sole source of information. It proves
organize units of work and a balance, more accurate and
chronological presentation of data or information.
(TeacherVision Staff,2017). According to Carl Woodward, he
refers book as “instruments for perpetuating the body of
knowledge painfully and slowly accumulated through the ages of
man. They are also mean of preserving and sustaining the solid
foundations of culture and learning. They provide the record of
man’s progress and the point of departure for steps into the
future, Through them the resources of mankind become the
birthright of generations to come.” This means that a single
book could help preserve a million knowledge for a lone period
of time.

Many studies proved that the uses of books are effective as

a medium of learning. Printed books were generally more
sustainable and are proven to be essential in learning rather
than those electronic or digital books. Writoscope give reasons
why printed books are better the e-books:

1. The feel of paper. For some readers, it is important for them

to have a tangible medium. For avid readers, the smell of pages
and the binding and flipping of the pages is a beautiful
feeling.

2. Flexibility and annotating. Annotating a printed is very easy

whereas it is very limited at e-book.

3. Ability to skim quickly. It is easier to skim quickly using a

tangible book rather than those in e-book. You can easily turn
out pages with the use of printed book.

4. No need for electric power. Charging phones or gadgets that

will serve as a medium to access e-book many cost higher than
buying a book. A book never gets low battery and is more
accessible rather than e-book.

Review of Related Studies

A number of research studies which are interconnected to

books and reading are conducted and validated. As this study
focuses on the effectiveness of books one study conducted by
Yvonne Behnke (2018)1 is related. Its objective is to analyze
the textbook effects and efficacy. She found out that:

1. Textbooks are fundamental to the learning of gender system as

they can contribute to the legitimation of gender roles
(Brugeilles and Cromer 2009).

2. The effects of gender representations in textbooks on students’

achievement are influenced by cultural, social, and ideological
structures featuring on the students’ daily life. Another study
is conducted by Christy Whitten, Sandra Labby, Sam L. Sullivan2
about the impact of pleasure reading. They included here the
recent studies of Kidd and Castano(2013), which suggested that
pleasure reading deepened empathy and temporarily allowed the
reader a greater understanding of other’s mental states
(Wilhelm & Smith, 2014).

In concentration and reading rates, Grzeschik et al.(2011)3

indicate that users do not suffer from reading text on e-book.
Another study has shown that paging and scrolling increase
reading, time and decrease information memory when combined
(Van Oostendorp and Van Nimwegen, 1998).

The study of Manaog (2011)4 claims that age and family’s

monthly income have significant influence on the proficiency
reading levels of the pupils, while the gender and birth order
have no significant influence. Also, they conclude that the
proposed remedial and enrichment reading program is an
effective tool to improve the literacy level of a student.

Another study of Acero (2010)5 suggested that there is a

need of reinforcement on strategies of intervention scheme
through support instructional materials due to the failing
performance of the samples in English. The text materials and
comprehension question for informal silent reading exercises of
the developed intervention scheme are valid in terms of
curricular.

Recent studies examining how gender representations in

textbooks affect students’ achievement came to varying

conclusions. Good et al.’s(2010)6 experimental study with US
high school students demonstrated that female students had
7

higher science comprehension after viewing counter

stereotypical images (female scientists), whereas male students
had higher comprehension after viewing stereotypical images
(male scientist). In contrast, Foulds’(2013)7 interview study
analyzed Kenyan primary students’ gender perceptions of
textbook images and revealed in a continuum of gender
stereotypes, particularly manifest when images of gender roles
were incongruent with students’ realties. Therefore, it can be
concluded that the effects of gender representations in
textbooks are influenced, inter alia, by students’ cultural and
social context. Hence, Fouls argues, on the basis of Kenyan
cultural context, that any effort to alter gender perceptions
must come first from students’ lives and then be brought into
the classroom. (Bhenke,2018. Text Books Effects And Efficacy)

Another study of Ranaweera, Ramanayaka, Bodhinayaka (2018)8

about the library vs. the internet is reviewed. The study
conclude that undergraduates of faculties of Science and
Commerce and Management selected the Internet is the most
preferred channel to collect information and the undergraduates
of facilities of Social Sciences and Humanities selected the
library as most preferred channel to gather information. The
main factor of disinterest on using the university library is
inadequate resources, out dated information resources and lack
of infrastructure facilities. It should provide necessary
infrastructure facilities to enable the undergraduates to
access both available print and electronic sources with a quick
and satisfied manner. Based on the results it was found that
still a significant number of undergraduates prefer to use
library than the internet. Therefore, this study recommends
that it is better to maintain a hybrid library with the print
materials as well as with modern E-library facilities.

From the observation of Shehu et al.(2015)9 in Nigeria,

students’ preference for internet over library was influenced
by the relative accessibility of the internet. They added that
the internet can be accessed often the library especially when
the library materials are not in electronic formats. They
maintain that academic libraries are sometimes less patronized
by students because of the availability of alternative sources
such as internet.

The study of Yebowaah (2017)10 also concluded that the

University for Development Studies has modern library
facilities that are being used by students. However, efforts by
the University to achieve full utilization of the library
resources have not been realized because many graduate students
have resorted to the use of traditional internet sources for
their academic work. 22 Students have considered traditional

internet resources as substitute to library resources. Rather
they serve

similar purposes. So, both internet and library resources

should play a complimentary role in providing relevant
information sources to facilitate students’ academic work.
Demographic and economic variables have been responsible for
students switching between the uses of sources of academic
information. The results of the study imply that despite the
switch between academic information sources, students are not
conveniently using both library and internet resources
resulting from the challenges associated with both sources.

The study of Boakye (1998)11 states that university

libraries play very important roles in supporting the
university’s academic and research. Without a library academic
and research work of the university will not be successful,
because libraries provide services that help in teaching,
learning and research. It is said that the Library is the heart
of every university or academic institution.

From the observation of Dhanalakshmi and Nageswara (2016)12,

websites are the most efficient and cheapest way for achieving
the entire three academic mission: teaching, research, and
technology transfer and hence the impact of electronic
publications is far larger than that obtained by traditional
journals and books in print (on paper) in the libraries. This
means that students have considered the traditional sources of
internet as a substitute to libraries despite the improvement
in technology in library resources.

Also, the study of Solera and Cataggatan (2018)13 about

motivations and constrains towards reading enhancement among
grade 7 student of University of North Eastern Philippines
stated that motivational and social support is an important
factor in reading enhancement of the students.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework of the study uses the IPO model.

It is composed of the INPUT, OUTPUT, PROCESS, OUTPUT and
FEEDBACK of the present study.

The input of the study are the samples and their

backgrounds. In the present study, selected grade 11 student of
different sex coming from Genesis Children’s Growth Academy
will be the samples. They are of different reading styles and
are altered in perceptions about reading and its effect to the
readers. The samples are expected to give different response to
the given questionnaires as well as the interview.

The process of the study is pertaining to the methods by

which the variables will be collected and synthesized. The
present study will undergo a deep observation and survey to the
samples. This will include giving questionnaires and conducting
an interview to the respondents. The collected data from the
said process will be combined together to make a conclusion in
order to come up with a good output.

The output of the study will be general conclusion and the

outcome of the said variables. The present study is expected to
produce a deeper insight on how important were books are and
how does it will affect or how it affects one’s life. The
output of the study will help to provide a feedback to the
entire study.

CHAPTER 3

This chapter deals with the design and methodology

employed in this research. It also deals with the background of
the respondents and the respondents itself. This chapter also
provides the plan and procedure that will be used in the whole
process of the study in order to give an organized and
synthesized information and data. This will also help the
researchers to enlighten the study.

Research Design

The researcher wants to explore about the importance of

books and its impact to Grade 11 students. Due to the nature of
the present study, the researcher decides to employ a
combination of phenomenological and case of study research
design using a survey questionnaire to gather data and
information regarding the problem of the present case study.

Wherein, phenomenological design focuses on obtaining

descriptions of the subjects’ or respondents’ lived experiences
in either writing or interviews. This analyzes the meaning
behind these experiences for each subject, rather than
generalizing to a greater population. (Donalek,2004) Moreover,
case study is a comprehensive, in-depth examination of a
specific individual, group of people or institution.

Sampling Technique

The researcher aims to provide and gather response of

different perspective from the sample so it is important to
look after the background of the sample in their reading
perceptions and how they are influence or affected by what they
read. This kind of sampling technique is purposive sampling or
also called as judgmental sampling since samples are handpicked
and is chosen with a purpose and to fit in the study.
