Abstract

This study shall provide an engineering intervention to mitigate the

flooding in Barangay Poblacion, Muntinlupa caused by the Magdaong River. The city

of Muntinlupa is partially populated by informal settlers, some of which live along the

river bank. The river floods due to overflowing during intense or continuous rains in

the area. The researchers plan to mitigate the inundation in the area by determining a

design discharge using a 50-year storm return period as a safety level. The procedure

that the researchers will follow is based on the Manual on Flood Control Planning by

the DPWH and JICA. The discharge and designs will be simulated in programs (HEC-

RAS and Excel Program) to determine its effectiveness when it comes to flood

mitigation. The researchers will provide three designs. The stability of these designs

will be based on the principles of dams and will be designed based on the NSCP 2015.

The researchers shall select the most appropriate design based on the capitalized cost

of the project, its structural stability and the number of households that will be affected

if such structure is to be approved.

guidance making this study possible.

We also thank the whole engineering faculty for all the lessons they taught us not only

inside the classroom but also on the outside. Thank you to Engr. Christian Acosta for assisting

us so many times in our thesis and also thank you to Engr. Nioro Furiscal for guiding us in our

design. We would also like to thank our panel, Engr. Billy Rejuso for helping us learn the

simulation programs we used in this thesis, Engr. Manny Taguba for his patience and guidance

in doing our manuscript, and also Engr. Ma. Eliza Cruz for the important challenges she has

given us and for her motherly care for us, her students.

We would also like to thank Engr. Rene Roncesvalles for helping us acquire the data

we need. We also thank our advisers for their continued support in all of us, and also our thesis

adviser Engr. Casiano Gonzales, Jr.

We would like to thank each other, despite having conflicting class schedules, we were

able to adjust and produce this study together and peacefully.

We thank the Almighty Lord God for keeping us safe in our travels, for our health and

lives, for the strength to endure weeks of all-nighters and for the blessings and guidance He has

bestowed upon us through the course of our lives and especially, this study.
