TITLE : EFFECTS OF DISTANCE LEARNING IN THE NUMERICAL

SKILLS IN ALBAY CENTRAL SCHOOL-LEGAZPI DISTRICT 4

I. Context and Rationale

The success and effectiveness of distance learning depends on the study

materials Jayaram and Dorababu (2020). Therefore, to cater to the needs and
abilities of each student, DepEd focused on self-study modules as the main learning
tool that can serve all students, which can be combined with other modalities of
delivery learning that students have access.

Undoubtedly, it is just a matter of continues effort of leaning to be fully

equipped with the learnings we need to be so called a Mathematics wizard, a
number master and so on. Pursuant to Section 16 of the Republic Act No. 10533,
otherwise known as the “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013”, the Department of
Education (DepEd), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the
Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), hereby issue the
following rules and regulations to implement the provisions of the Act.

Mathematics Framework for Philippine Basic Education Philippine Council of

Mathematics Teacher Education Inc. Declarations: Principle 1. Being mathematically
competent means more than having the ability to compute and perform algorithms
and mathematical procedures. Principle 2. The physical and social dimensions of a
mathematical environment contribute to one’s success in learning mathematics.
Principle 3. Mathematics is best learned when students are actively engaged.
Principle 4. A deep understanding of mathematics requires a variety of tools for
learning.

Thus, the purpose of this study is to proposed training that will aid teaching
instruction in teaching numeracy skills.

II. Action Research Questions

This study aims to identify the effects of distance learning in the numeracy
skills of Grade 5 pupils in Albay Central School and determine the challenges
encountered by Grade 5 teachers. Specifically, it will seek answer to the
following sub-problems:
1. What are the approaches in teaching numeracy skills of grade 5
teachers?
2. What are the effects of distance learning modality in the numeracy skills
to the performance of Grade 5 Pupils?
3. Is there a significant difference between the effects of teaching
numeracy skills the Distance Learning Delivery Modality to the Performance of
the Grade 5 Pupils?
4. What training/workshop for teachers may be proposed to enhance
teaching numeracy skills?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

The study will develop training/workshop for teachers to enhance teaching

numeracy skills particularly in grade 6. This training/workshop will aid to
reinforce numeracy skills. On the other hand, the teacher will use teaching
strategies depending on the concept of the lesson.

IV. Action Research Methods

a. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and Information

The respondents of this study will be composed of 13 teachers

teaching in Mathematics and 50 grade 5 pupils The needed data will be
obtained from a range of sources. The answer to the questionnaires will be
the source in formulating the objectives, content, and performance standards.

b. Data Gathering Methods

The researcher will seek permission from the Schools Division

Superintendent of DepEd Legazpi City Division to conduct the said
undertaking. After approval, a letter will also send to the school district
supervisor to conduct the study. The researcher will provide questionnaires to
the respondents. Similarly, an observation will be initiated to identify
challenges encountered. Subsequently, an interview will be conducted with
the teacher-respondents to gather data and to validate and analyze the data
gathered.
c. Data Analysis Plan

In the analysis and interpretation of the data collected, the researcher

will use the following statistical tools. The following statistical tools will be
used for the interpretation of results:

Ranking. This will be based on the percentage to show the degree of

performance in numeracy skills.

Percentage. This will be used to determine the frequencies of the

pupils’ response.

The formula is

Where:

P = percentage of distribution

F = frequency of an item of response

N = total number of pupils

Weighted Mean. This will be used to get the average frequency of the
response in each weighted item.

Formula:

Likert Scale. To determine the effects of distance learning in teaching

numeracy skills. 3-Point Likert Scale will be used, and its interpretation as
follows:

Range Description

2.50 – 3.00 Very Satisfactory

2.01 – 2.49 Satisfactory

1.00 – 2.00 Poor

Mean Performance Score. This will be used determine the

performance rating of the pupils in the pretest and posttest. This will be
used to know the level of performance of the pupils.

Formula:
Where:

MPS = Mean Performance Score

M = Mean
N = Number of Item
