ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

INTRODUCTION

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this research is to discuss and examine the possibility of online

teaching replacing traditional classroom education and explore the online teaching strategies

and techniques that can be integrated to the classroom.

With the fast development of science and information technology in the last decades,

people become more and more dependent on cell phones, computers, pads, and other

techniques devices, so do teachers and educators. Instead of the traditional teaching way of

blackboard & textbook, teachers in the classroom gradually start to use multi-media,

computer, PowerPoint, educational Apps, etc. They apply remote teaching for students from

mountain areas and poor regions. Also, a lot of online education has sprung up and there are

more and more various online schools and educational institutes or organizations. An ever-

increasing number of teachers begin to use Zoom and Google classrooms and other kinds of

online education.

Due to the Global epidemic/outbreak of the novel corona-virus COVID-19, teachers

and students all over the world have to move to online classrooms. Since 2010, teachers and

educators have been facing pandemic-driven remote schooling and online teaching (Cohn-

Vargas, 2020). However the variation of the novel corona-virus has prolonged the epidemic

period after a short while of control and no one knows when will it ends. This has raised a

lot of questions, such as: Will the epidemic last forever? When can we get back to school as

usual? Will online classrooms totally take place of the traditional ones? If not, to what

extent will online teaching replace or be integrated into classroom education? My school

and colleague teachers are all interested in the topic and would like to know the opinions
6
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

and perspectives of the teachers and students toward online teaching after about one-year of

online teaching and learning.

Context

I am currently teaching in a Christian school with a small population, including about: 10

teachers and 30 students ranging from Grade 1-7. We had a short period of online classroom in

last year (2020) due to the raged pandemic COVID-19. This year, the outbreak has eased and we

have got back to school on a safe and assured condition under the requirements of parents who

resisted online teaching for some good reasons. But still we are wondering and thinking of ever-

advancing technologies and the most advanced online education. After all, the ever-developing

online teaching may take place of traditional classroom education and one day students and

teachers may not go to school and sit in the classroom anymore. Therefore, I am going to make

surveys and interviews to collect information and data of teachers’ and students’ ideas and

opinions on online teaching, analyzing and examining the possibility of online teaching replacing

classroom education and exploring the techniques and strategies of online teaching that can be

integrated into classroom to make classroom education more effective and productive in order to

enhance student learning and advance the outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

The problem is what is the possibility of online teaching replacing classroom education?

To what extent can online teaching replace classroom education? To answer this question, we

have to firstly discuss and research deeply and find out the following questions: 1) What are

the advantages (and disadvantages) of online education? 2) What are the (advantages) and

disadvantages of traditional teaching? 3) Is it possible to combine both ways for effective

and productive teaching and learning? 4) If so, how can a teacher can combine and
7
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

incorporate online teaching methods into traditional face-to face teaching? What are the

techniques and strategies?

Rationale

The answers and information that will be collected through literature review and

interviews and observations about the above mentioned problems will help provide evidence to

examine the possibility of online teaching replacing classroom education and explore the

techniques and strategies of online teaching that can be integrated into classroom to make

classroom education more effective and productive in order to enhance student learning and

advance the outcomes.

Prior Interventions

Before the interview/observation of the participants, I made a literature review to find out

what other scholars had found and examined to help shape my research questions and provide

evidence to support my understanding and proposal.

Research Questions

What are the advantages and disadvantages of online education? What are the

advantages and disadvantages of traditional classroom education? To what extent will online

learning take place of traditional classroom education and how to balance both? What are the

techniques and strategies to integrate online teaching techniques and strategies into classroom

teaching and learning and how?

Significance of the Study

This study analysis the advantages and disadvantages of both online and classroom

education, which will make it clear for both participant teachers and students as well as the

readers and recall and provide evidence for their own opinions and perspectives toward online
8
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

teaching and classroom education. It examines the possibility of online teaching replacing

classroom education and explores the techniques and strategies of online teaching that can be

integrated into classroom, which can be applied by the school administrators and teachers to

make classroom education more effective and productive and thereby to improve teaching

profession and to enhance student learning and advance the outcomes.

LITERATURE REVIEW

To answer this question, I will mainly use qualitative data to gain a deep

understanding the advantages and disadvantages of both online and classroom teaching,

applying the method of literature review and using the strategies of choosing and using

sources (Ohio State University Libraries, n.d.). I made a literature review to search for both

quantitative and qualitative data to get to know what others scholars and educators have

found in their researches regarding of the proportion of online education in their teaching

and learning practices as well as the methods and strategies they applied or are applying in

integrating online learning into the classroom, focusing on qualitative data (Ohio State

University Libraries, n.d; CSU-Long Beach, n. d.).

Online Education Replacing classroom Teaching?

In order to examine the possibility of online learning taking place of classroom

education, I firstly need to learn and understand the advantages of online education,

compared to traditional classroom education. That means I will need to explore both the

advantages and disadvantages of both online and classroom education, which will enable me

to understand why online education have the possibility and to what extent it can take place

or balance traditional classroom education. So I made a literature review to find out what
9
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

have found and examined by other scholars and educators regards of the benefits and

drawbacks of both online and classroom education.

Integrating Rather Than Replacing

As it goes, everything has two sides, so does with online education. I believe that

online education should never ever totally take place of traditional classroom education.

However, online education as a new type of schooling does have many advantages

compared with classroom education. I would like to explore to what extent online learning

can take place of traditional classroom education or we can say how do we combine and

balance both of online and classroom teaching in our teaching practices to complete and

perfect instructions in order to promote student learning at large and flourish the whole

student.

Therefore I should explore and get to know what others teachers and educators have

found in their researches regarding of the proportion of online education in their teaching

and learning practices as well as the methods and strategies they applied or are applying in

integrating online learning into the classroom.

Conclusion

The literature review of investigating the advantages and disadvantages of both online

and classroom education could provide as many as evidences for my topic of investigating

the possibility of online learning replacing traditional classroom education. The literature

review of exploring what others scholars and educators have found in their researches

regarding of the proportion of online education in their teaching and learning practices as

well as the methods and strategies in integrating online learning into the classroom provides
10
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

me the qualitative data that I need to prove the importance of integrating online teaching

into the classroom and also enlightens me the methods and strategies other teachers and

educators apply in the integration with challenges pre-informed. Just as what American

University (n. d.) stated, reviewing of literatures can help researchers to: 1) see what has

and has not been investigated; 2) identify data sources that other researchers have used; 3)

learn how others have defined and measured key concepts; 4) develop alternative research

projects; 5) put one's work in perspective; 6) contribute to the field by moving research

forward; 7) see what came before, and what did and didn't work for other researchers; 8)

demonstrate one's understanding, and one's ability to critically evaluate research in the field;

and 8) provide evidence that may be used to support one's own findings (para. 1).

In addition, the observation of my own teaching practices encourages a deeper

understanding of the benefits and disadvantages of online teaching, which could get me and the

readers down to earth and become much persuadable. The survey or observation of 5 teachers

and 5 students could provide me both quantitative and qualitative statistics of what other teachers’

and students’ perspectives of online learning replacing or integrating with classroom education

as well as their participation rate of both online teaching and classroom education. CSU-Long

Beach (n. d.) stated that observations should serve a formulated research purpose and be related

to existing literature or theories, and should be systematically planned, recorded systematically

and refined into general propositions or hypotheses, and be subject to checks and controls on

validity and reliability.

METHODOLOGY

Purpose of the Study

To help find out the answer, I will make surveys and interview some teachers and

students and ask for their perspectives of online and classroom education and their points of

views about online teaching replacing traditional classroom face-to-face teaching. According

to Baron (2008), “(a) sample selection carefully follows an appropriate sampling design, (b) the

sample is randomly selected from the population, (c) a large enough sample is selected in

relation to the total population, and (d) the sample size is adequate for the data-collecting

instrument being used” (p. 12). To meet the requirements, I will select several elementary and

middle-school teachers from my teacher friends within a large urban district. I would also

practice incorporating online teaching skills into my classroom to help support my assumption

that face-to face teaching cannot be totally replaced by online teaching. Just as what Painter (199)

said, “Teacher-researchers simultaneously act as participants and observers as they conduct

research in their own classrooms” (para. 4).

Research Questions

To collect information of teachers’ and students’ opinions and perspectives toward online

and classroom teaching and learning, I come up with few question for them to answer: 1) Have

you ever have an online class? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of online

teaching/learning? What are the advantages and disadvantages of traditional classroom teaching?

Do you think online education can take place of traditional classroom teaching? What are the

reasons? If not, if there a way for online education to be integrated into the classroom to improve

classroom teaching? What are the techniques and strategies and how?

Study Population
12
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

I chose 5 teachers and 5 students to be my participants of the research. Both the teachers

are Chinese and come from a range of grade 1 to grade 7. Here is the information of teachers: 1

Mathematic teacher for grade 1, 3, 5; 1 History teacher for grade 3, 5, 6, 7; 1 Chinese Language

teacher for 3, 7; 1 science teacher for grade 6, 7; and 1 English teacher for grade 5, 6, 7. Here is

the information of students:1 1st grade boy aged at 8, 1 3rd grade boy aged at 10, 2 6th grade

students, one boy and one girl, aged at 12 and 13, 1 7th girl aged 13.

Population Justification

I specially chose the 5 teachers to cover all the grades and different subjects and

randomly chose the 5 students from the lowest grade to the highest grade with a nearly balanced

gender difference.

Intervention

After collecting the information through literature review, I made interviews of 5 students

and 5 teachers during break time to collect data of their opinions on the advantages and

disadvantages of the advantages and disadvantages of both online and classroom education, as

well as the possibility of online education replacing classroom education, and the techniques and

strategies of online education that can be integrated into classroom and how.

Interviewing Plan

The interviews will be conducted at rest breaks during the period from March 11th to

March 17th . I will have a private talk and interview the targeted teachers and students one by one

in the meeting room at school. I ask the respondents to answer the pre-designed questions, which

involves: Do you think online teaching will take place of traditional classroom education? If so,

to what extent? If not, do you think classroom education should make changes or integrate some

instructional strategies or methods of online teaching? If so, what are the techniques and
13
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

strategies of online education that can be integrated into classroom? How to balance both in the

integration? The respondents are encouraged to freely express their perspectives and ideas and I

will collect information and make note accordingly.

Sources of Data

The existing source of data would be my findings of observations about the

advantages and disadvantages of both online and classroom education, which can be quite

partial and incomplete. The literature review helped find out what have found and examined

by other scholars and educators regards of the benefits and drawbacks of both online and

classroom education, enabling me to stand on the shoulders of giants and helps provide

evidence to support my own point of view. The existing sources and information of the

literature review of the Topic on Online and Traditional Learning I did in Written

Assignment Unit 2 can be used and integrated. The existing information helps me to

determine the methods and steps that I can use and apply for my qualitative research and

interview to help support my research paper.

Research Procedure

I first explain my intention and the purpose of the research to the school leader and show

her the Informed Consent to ask for her permission of my interviews and make an agreement

with her. Then I choose participants and make appointments with them for the interviews.

Soliciting Participants

I choose 5 teachers and 5 students to be my participants of the research. I choose teachers

and students ranging from a range of grade 1 to grade 7.

Here is
14
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

the information of students:1 1st grade boy aged at 8, 1 3rd grade boy aged at 10, 2 6th grade

students, one boy and one girl, aged at 12 and 13, 1 7th girl aged 13.

Informed Consent

I explain my intention and the purpose of the research to the school leader and show her

the Informed Consent to ask for her permission of my interviews. I also explain the same to the

targeted participants before the interviews, pre-informing them about and ask for their agreement

of the signature needed for teachers and student parents. For more information please see the

Appendix Ⅱ The Informed Consent Form.

Data Collection Procedures

I firstly chose 5 teachers teaching different subjects in various grades, then I interviewed

the teachers and the students one by one when they are available during the break. An interview

usually takes about 10-30 minutes. I asked them the pre-designed questions one by one and

record their responds accordingly.

Considerations

The information collect are supposed to be anonymous, especially for the students, so

they could express their real thoughts and opinions about online teaching and classroom teaching.

It’s funny to find out that the advantages teachers stated may be the disadvantages students stated

and verse vice.

Ethical Considerations

“Research ethics are moral principles that guide researchers to conduct and report

research without deception or intention to harm the participants of the study or members of the

society as a whole, whether knowingly or unknowingly” (Singh, 2019, para. 1). Ethical

Considerations supporting important social and moral values, such as the principle of doing no
15
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

harm to others are very important because research ethics can promote the aims of research, and

support the values required for collaborative work, such as mutual respect and fairness, which

can ensure the accountability of the actions of researchers and ensure that the public can trust

research (Resnick, 2015; as cited in SKILLSYOUNEED, n. d., para. 4).

Considerations During Intervention

While doing literature review, the scholars and their literatures helped me shape the

questions of my interview and observations. Rispoli (2020) addresses the importance of in-

person education and argues that online learning can be as effective as traditional education

as along as online learning provides quality conversations and discussions, focusing on

interpersonal interactions and building social presence through interactive technologies. So I

focus on the opinions of teachers and students about interpersonal interactions through face-

to-face communication in the classroom and interactive technologies. Reddy (2018 )

discussed the state of the traditional classroom, stating the issues of individual attention

span and engagement as well as the irreplaceable factor of active participation involving

face-to-face communication and collaboration. While, he also addressed on the advantages

of e-learning tools which could enable teachers give precise, clear-cut feedback on how a

student is engaging with vast materials and resources and could reduce teachers’ workload

on grades so that that they could spend more time engaging each student on an individual

level. In the end, he came to a conclusion that “It’s this combination of customized content

and resource management that will allow teachers to lead our classrooms into the future”

(para. 14) and “e-learning won’t replace traditional classrooms, it will change the way we

know them today” (para. 19). In addition, TCGLOBAL (2020) holds the idea that what to be

moving towards in the future is “a hybrid model of learning – a mix of online and offline”
16
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

(para. 3). Johnson, A. (2017) also holds the idea that “virtual teaching will never ever

replace classroom teaching” and it explains “why”, focusing on the benefit of real-time,

face-to-face communication and interactions (teacher-student and student-student

interactions) in the traditional classroom (para. 2). University of the Potomac (n. d.)

presents statistics to prove that online learning is quite attractive but traditional teaching

still cannot be replaced. All this just helped me find evidences in participants’ responds and

support my proposal to integrate the techniques and strategies of online education into the

classroom.

Considerations During Data Collection

“Data collection is the central part of community health improvement efforts.” (NJHC, n.

d.) In my study, the data I need is mainly collected through literature review and interviews or

observations. Ethic considerations during interviews should follow certain principles to help

support the research and show respect to the participants. According to NJHC (n. d.), I should let

participants know who I am and my reason for collecting data when you ask them if they would

like to participate. That’s why I showed them the informed consent, promising that their

involvement is voluntary and they are free to withdraw from any active data collection or

intervention program at any point without pressure or fear of retaliation. I also confirmed that

there would be no any physical or emotional harm to participants.

Considerations of Researcher Bias

I would also try to remain neutral and unbiased and make records as it is and do not let

my personal preconceptions or opinions interfere with the data collection process. The

participants are also assured that information provided is confidential and the findings will be
17
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

anonymous and the data I collected will be protected from people. I would also be respectful of

people’s time and when possible and compensate them for it no matter for teachers or students.

Conclusion

The interview (see Appendix I ) expresses more vividly the advantages and disadvantages

from the perspectives of both the teachers and the students, which add evidences support my

proposal that online teaching cannot take place of classroom education unless the technique of

VR can enable people to flash move and communicate with people whenever and wherever they

want. After all, people are social and the face-to-face interaction and communication of

classroom education is self-evident. Therefore, we should not worry that online education would

take place of classroom teaching, but instead, we should educate ourselves with a global mindset

and follow up with the times to integrate into the classroom updated techniques and strategies of

online education in order to improve teaching profession and enhance student learning and

thereby advance their academic achievements.

Effective Online Teaching Strategies to Be Integrated into the Classroom

INTRODUCTION

Purpose of the Study

With the rapid development of science and information technology in the last few decades,

the advanced technologies have brought people many advantages and made our life much

easier and more comfortable. Instead of the traditional teaching method of blackboard &

textbook, teachers in the classroom gradually begin using multi-media, computers,

Presentation applications, educational applications, etc. Teachers apply or combine remote

or online teaching lessons for students with face-to-face classroom teaching for a large

variety of learners, such as students from mountain areas and poor regions, adult students

who are at work and students who have time and space restrictions. The purpose of this

research report is to discuss and examine and explore the online technologies and teaching

strategies that can be integrated into the classroom to make teaching and learning more effective

and productive.

Literature review

To find out the online technologies and teaching strategies that can be integrated into the

classroom to make teaching and learning more effective and productive, I apply qualitative

data to gain a deep understanding of effective online technologies and teaching strategies that

can be integrated into the classroom (CSU Long Beach, n. d.). I make a literature review to

search for both quantitative and qualitative data to get to know what others scholars and

educators have found in their researches. This review of literature examines the integrating

the technologies and strategies into the classroom, focusing on qualitative data (CSU Long

Beach, n. d.).
19
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

Quizalize Blog (2018) stated that incorporating technology into classroom is an

effective teaching strategy for the classroom teaching, which is “a great way to actively

engage your students” (para. 15). Educators and teachers can use interactive whiteboards or

mobile devices to display images and videos, which can help students visualize new

academic concepts, and they can also allow students to use mobile devices like iPads and/or

tablets incorporating educational programmes in the classroom to record results, take

photos/videos or make formative assessments (Quizalize Blog, 2018). Through these

technology integrations, teachers can help students to physically engage during lessons and

in the learning process, and to research and explore their ideas instantly and autonomously

(Quizalize Blog, 2018).

To be more specific, there are nine unique ways to use technology in the classroom.

According to Nina (2019) these nine unique methods include: Gamified learning, Digital

field trips, Integrate social media, Gather student feedback, Creating digital content, Using a

shared online classroom calendar, Review and critique webpages, Incorporate video and

multimedia into lessons and presentations, and Online activities for students who finish

work early. Edutopia (2007) also addresses the importance of integrating technology for

feedback and assessment to enhance opportunity for timely and meaningful feedback and

assess, involving tools such as Quick Checks (Poll Everywhere, Socrative, or Mentimeter),

Personalized Feedback (Edmodo, Schoology, or Moodle), Screencasts (Screencast-O-Matic

and Jing.) and Evernote.

All this shows that teachers can integrate various online technologies and strategies

into the classroom to enhance student learning and even improve teachers teaching

profession through assessments and individualized feedback.

Context of Study

I am currently teaching in a Christian school with a small population, including about: 10

teachers and 30 students ranging from Grade 1-9. Most of our students are going to study abroad

after graduation. To help them adjust and adapt themselves for classrooms and lessons abroad,

we made a curriculum adjustment and decided to change the textbooks and materials and we are

integrating the relative online lessons/videos into the classrooms of grade 6, 7 and 8 for English

and Reading in the next term, starting in September. To examine the accessibility and feasibility

of this plan, we had a trial operation for half a month in the end of the last term in July.

Data Collection and Analysis

10 students from grade 7 (5 students) and 8 (5 students) were involved in the programme

and I as the English teacher made classroom observations and recorded grades from C-A for

student behaviors and performances, involving aspects of preparation, discipline, homework and

exercises. I also made a comparison between the average grades for the traditional textbook

lessons in the last month in June and the new way of teaching with technology integration during

the trial operation based on a half-month period, focusing on integrating relative curriculum

online videos/lessons into the classroom and trying to prove the effectiveness of the integration.

Data Collection Procedures

For each lesson on each day, all our teachers have a table to record and grade students

from C (less than 60% correction) to A (more than 90%) for their preparation before class

(textbooks, materials, stationary, etc.), discipline (classroom behaviors), homework and exercises

(see the Appendix Ⅲ The Classroom Record Sample). During the half month of the trial

operation, I did classroom observations for each of my English lesson of 40 minutes and did the
21
ONLINE VS CLASSROOM EDUCATION: REPLACING OR INTEGRATING

same records and grades. Then I reviewed the historical records in the last month in June and

conducted an average value and then compared it with the same made during the trial.

The relative curriculum online videos/lessons are provided by the same Press of the

textbook set we choose.

Data Analysis

This classroom observation analysis involved 12 students in 10 lessons. Due to the same

level of English competency and ability, the 10 students are taking English lessons together in

the same class. Here in below presents the recorded grades for the 10 students during the half

month of trial operation (see in Table 1) as well as their average grades per half month conducted

in the last month in June (see in Table 2). The data of the difference is also presented (see in

The students in Grade 7 have a big problem of discipline that they usually talk loudly in

the classroom even if the teacher requires them to stop talking. Whenever the teacher starts a

topic, they can relate the topic and say something funny. They just keep talking and they can’t

help themselves to stop, especially P.C and J.W. Their over-interactive discussions always

disturb the lesson and make the teacher angry. So for many times, they got a C for discipline and

a B for exercises in the traditional textbook –whiteboard classes. But during the trial with online

lessons, they became more concentrated and talked much less except they were allowed for

group discussions because if not, they could not catch up with the lesson. J. H is another students

who is quite lazy and usually does not finished his homework in time or just complete half of the

homework. But after taking the integrated lessons, he became more positive and interested and

engaged in the learning process. And he can finish his homework in time and in a good quality

for most of the time.

From the data I collected and the above presented tables, we can easily see that in this

new way of teaching with technology integration during the trial operation, all students had made

a progress and many of them had substantial increases. The highest increment is as high as 25%

and the least increment is also as high as 10%. D. C. became more interested and positive and he

is a so diligent that he got up early in the morning at 5 o’clock and read English texts.

Conclusion

The observations of my own teaching practices in the classroom encourage a deeper

understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of online education as well as the benefits of

the corresponding online strategies that could integrated into the classroom. The literature review

and the quantitative and qualitative statistics presented in this study provide enough evidence to

prove that online education will not take the entire place of face-to-face classroom teaching but

rather integrating into the classroom.

Providing multidimensional tools that assist the learning process, technology integration

enables teachers to become instructors and facilitators, and enables students to take responsibility

for their learning outcomes. Applying online technologies in the classroom help create a more

engage environment and incorporate different learning styles, and it can also improve

collaboration, improve student-teacher communication, and sharpen student digital skills and

prepare them with one of the collated 21st century skills – “knowing how and when to use

technology and choosing the most appropriate tool for the task” (Edutopia, 2007, para. 4)

From all the data I collected, it is clear and obvious that integrating relative curriculum

online videos/lessons into the classroom can indeed improve the student learning. Well planned

and designed lessons integrated with online technologies/videos can actively engage the

students, help them visualize new academic concepts and become more concentrated.

Effective technology integration must happen across the curriculum to deepen and enhance

the learning process and it must support active engagement, group participation, frequent

interaction and feedback, and real-world connections (Edutopia, 2007). Through these

technology integrations, teachers can also help students to physically engage during lessons

and in the learning process, and to research and explore their ideas instantly and

autonomously (Quizalize Blog, 2018).
