Canticle of the Sun Lesson Plan

GRADE LEVEL: High School

STANDARDS:
1. MU:Pr6.1.E.8a Demonstrate attention to technical accuracy and expressive qualities in
prepared and improvised performances of a varied repertoire of music representing
diverse cultures and styles.

OBJECTIVES:
1. A high school SATB choir will be able to accurately perform the song “Canticle of the
Sun” from measure 197 to measure 207 with accurate pitches with a success rate of at
least 80%
2. A high school SATB choir will be able to accurately perform the song “Canticle of the
Sun” from measure 197 to measure 207 with accurate rhythms with a success rate of at
least 80%

PROCEDURE:
1. To start, review what was taught in Lesson Plan #1 by singing through measures 187-197,
fixing any major issues that arise
2. After the review, have the students individually write in the solfege for their part
a. Give the students the keys associated with the music (197 should be solfeged in C
Major)
b. Remind them to work with the people around them if they need to
3. Once the Solfege is written in, have the choir learn the music in parts
a. First, play the bass part on the piano (slower than A Tempo), then have the basses
sing it from 197, stopping at 207, clarifying any problem spots along the way after
the fact
b. Then have the tenors learn their a part in the same was as the basses, playing their
part on the piano and then having them sing through it, clarifying any problem
spots along the way
c. Have the basses sing their part with the tenors, playing their parts on the piano.
This still does not have to be up to speed
d. Then have the Altos learn their a part in the same was as the basses, playing their
part on the piano and then having them sing through it, clarifying any problem
spots along the way
e. Have the Sopranos learn their a part in the same was as the basses, playing their
part on the piano and then having them sing through it, clarifying any problem
spots along the way
f. Have Altos and Sopranos sing their parts together
g. Have the entire choir sing their parts together

MATERIALS: A piano/keyboard to help accompany the song and help with parts, printed out
scores of the music for the students

ASSESSMENT: The teacher will observe students performing their part of the song “The
Canticle of the Sun” from measure 197-207. The teacher will observe both the students’ pitch
and the students rhythmic accuracy for their part. This assessment will use the following likert
scale
