PLIGHT OF TABANGNONS
HISTORY
The Tribung Agta Tabangnon of Albay is among the
14 million indigenous peoples of the Philippines.
The Tribung Agta Tabangnon. “Agta” is an ethnic
group that originally dominated the entire region
are as of late been sporadically located in the
provinces of Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur,
Masbate, and Catanduanes. Nomadic by nature, they
come to know the ways of life of the lowlanders.
However, they are reported to raid the Christian
Filipino settlements in order to obtain cattle
and food. Through time, they become acculturated
and adapted some practices of the Christians
without totally losing their own identity. Some
of their traditional beliefs and rituals are
still practiced.
CHARACTERISTICS
Agta Tabangnon in Tiwi, Albay has four
tribal communities namely: Misibis,
Mayong, Joroan, and Sitio Tabgon. As
to the socio-political aspect, each
tribal community is headed by a
chieftain who is responsible and is
expected by the tribes’ people to lead
the community in all aspects of life
in the tribe. The added responsibility
of an elected chieftain is that he is
expected to coordinate all of the
Indigenous Peoples’ concerns to both
the government agencies and non-
governmental agencies for development.
CULTURE AND ARTS
are among the significant attractions in community-based tourism.
The four communities have almost the same, rich and distinct Agta
Tabangnon cultures through the years manifested in their arts.
DANCES
the four communities, although it is rarely practiced, still know the
“Tumaro” dance with the use of “bagol” (coconut shell) as a
musical instrument and the costume is made of “sinamay/bandala”
(cloth made from abaca).
Tumaro
is being danced for entertainment and merry-making during
festivities or ordinary celebrations in the tribe.
Pantomina
is also being danced in their own version and is being
danced by newlywed couples.
Pangapudan
dance is a very significant dance for the Tabangnons. The
Pangapudan is danced during the “Pangapudan Celebration”
which is an annual thanksgiving celebration for the good harvest
and the good life of the tribe and to request another abundant
year ahead. The “Pangapudan Celebration” is celebrated
according to their ethnic lunar calendar, but now it is celebrated
every June 24 and 25 annually.
SONGS AND OTHER ART FORMS:

abaca).
TRADITIONAL AGTA HOUSES
CUSTOMARY TRADITIONS
TRIBAL RITUAL
is among the tourist attractions that lure local and foreign
tourists to visit a tourist site (Fisher, 2016). Annually,
the Agta Tabangnon tribal chieftains and elders organize the
traditional ritual of calling spirits to give thanks for the
bounty, good life, and good health and to ask for another
bountiful harvest for the year.
PANGAPUDAN RITUAL
This ritual is held at the Tabgon Plateau (summit of the
mountain/ ancestral domain). As a part of their religiosity, the
ritual of thanksgiving is offered to the creator for giving them
life and everything in the environment. This normally starts at
around three in the afternoon and they stay there overnight.
THE ECONOMIC ASPECT
Jobs and economic activities are very important
indicators of the performance of the economy of an
area. The Agta Tabangnons and the four tribal
communities make use of their skills to earn a
living by engaging in micro-enterprise, welding,
weaving, farming and animal raising and other
micro-economic activities.
PLIGHT OF TABANGNON
Education is an appropriate platform for reflecting and demonstrating not
just indigenous peoples' historical abuses, discrimination, and
marginalization, but also their continued struggle for equality and
recognition of their peoples' and individuals' rights. The barriers to
Indigenous learners' education are characterized by indigenous learners.,
attitudes that are discriminatory and racist in the school environment by the
stigmatization of a sense of indigenous identity and a low sense of self-
worth, including those expressed in textbooks and other materials and among
nonindigenous students and teachers, language barriers between indigenous
learners and teachers, and insufficient funds and indigenous education is
given a low priority, as poor teacher training is shown in. (2015) (Kramer)
Numerous indigenous tribes face various sorts of discrimination, including
stereotyping as backward and stupid. To mitigate, if not eliminate, such
preconceptions, when they immerse themselves in formal schooling and pursue
further education, education may be the key (Adonis, 2010).
The Tribung Agta Tabangnon’s percentage of educational
attainment is very low. Limited studies have explored
the Education of the Agta people. Food security is
more a goal than a reality for indigenous peoples
wherein education is just a second priority.
