Simple Past and Past continuous tense

1. Simple Past.
Pattern :
Kalimat positif;

S + P ( to be : was, were. + V2 ) + O

Kalimat negative;

S + P ( DID + NOT + V1 ) / ( TO BE; WAS, WERE. + NOT ) + O

Kalimat Tanya;

P ( TO BE; WAS, WERE ) / ( DID ) + S + O ?

Usage: digunakan untuk menyatakan peristiwa yang lampau dan tidak ada hubungan
dengan sekarang.

Example:
Statement :
- I wrote a letter
- He worked hard

Negative :
- I did not write a letter.
- We were not a robber.

Interrogative :
- Did you write a letter? Yes, I did.
- Did he work hard? No, he did not.
- Were you a student? Yes, I was.
- What did you write? I wrote a letter.

Time Expressions:

- Yesterday,…(morning, afternoon, etc)

- Last….(night, week, etc)
- Ago…(a year ago, three years ago, etc)
- The day before yesterday.

2. Past continuous tense.

Pattern :

Kalimat Positive;
S + P ( TO BE ( WAS, WERE ) + V-ing ) + O

Kalimat Negative;
S + P (TO BE ( WAS, WERE ) + NOT + V ing ) + O

Kalimat Interogative;
P ( TO BE ( WAS, WERE ) + S + V ing + O
 Usage: digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu peristiwa yang terjadi sebelum peristiwa
lain pada waktu lampau.

Example:
- The students were studying English when another student came in the class.
- When another student came in the class, The students were studying English.
- Another student came in the class while the students were studying English.
- While the students were studying English, another student came in the class.

PAST TENSE KOMBINASI

Past continuous bisa dikombinasikan dengan Simple Past menggunakan kata

penghubung (conjuntion);

- When
Andi (eat) soto → Andi was eating soto
The guest (come) → The guest came
Andi was eating soto when the guest came.

- While
The phone (ring) → The phone rang
I (take) a bath → I was taking a bath
The phone rang while I was taking a bath
