Reflection on Motivating People

Motivation is one of the most important things every leader and member should
possess. It may be personal or not, but this changes developmentally and
situationally from year to year or moment to moment. Motivation is what inspires
or catalyzes every person to aspire, hope, dream, and be passionate to reach for
what we all wanted to achieve.

I believe that most people are driven by what matters most to them at that
particular moment in their life. Without motivation, there will be nothing to impel
us to reach for anything more than we have. But the hard thing about motivation is
finding a way to sustain it. As a leader or manager of a group or company, it is our
task to continually draw out the best in our members while working for the best
result we can achieve. It is not just simply blurting out all the stuff we want from
them, but it’s all about bringing our presence with them as we journey towards our
goals. Sometimes, our mere presence and help with the task, brings some extra
push to our members in working hard amidst certain difficulties. They will be able
to feel that they are not alone and they have someone they can rely to.

A true motivator and leader help his/her members sustain and expand motivation
even after they are gone. We have to remember that one of the most important
resources is our staff. People matter as well as policies. It is essential therefore, to
agree sound policies for recruiting, selecting, developing and appraising staff, and
to implement them effectively. However, if s/he is not to be quickly disillusioned,
it is important for the manager to accept that the vagaries of human nature, our
urges and inclinations, our defenses and fears, our reactions to other people and to
authority, all combine to make dealing with people the most puzzling and difficult
thing to do in life. Despite this, it is vital that the head trusts his/her staff and is
prepared to share power with them. Though ready to take final responsibility, they
have made power-sharing the keynote of their organization and administration.

We have to always to consider that not at all times, everyone including us can be at
our very best. When this happens, it is very crucial that we have to find some
motivating factors to help our people continue with the task, rather than giving up
on them easily. It is sometimes the critical error, most of the heads of a company or
group tend to commit. We are not as stable as always, no matter how much we try
to be. The degree of our needs and emotional stability varies from time to time and
we always have a hard time dealing with this trivial matter. As a leader or
manager, we have to bring some rays of light or hope to the darkest moments our
staff is into. Motivating people may seem to be easy to say but I guess, it’s one of
the hardest tasks a leader can do because not all may be able to do it efficiently and
effectively. We are dealing with thinking and emotional beings here (human) not
just some mere object that can’t even speak or express their selves such as our
other resources. So, we have to be very careful and thoughtful in dealing with these
matters.
