Teaching Philosophy
Teaching has been in my blood. My grandfather was a high-school teacher, my father is a college professor
and so I wanted to be a university professor. I used to like teaching my classmates during my undergrad
studies to make them understand what was taught in the classroom. At the same time, I wanted to be an
Electrical Engineer and later I fall in love with Biomedical Engineering research since my senior project in
the final year of my undergraduate. All these dreams can be possible if I become a University Professor of
EEE or related area where I can prepare and guide the future electrical engineers and biomedical
researchers. Therefore, I joined as a Lecturer in a university a week after my graduation. Then I realized
that teaching is not a 9-5 job, it is a continuous 24/7, 7 days a week, 365 days in a year- responsibility.
Further I realized university teaching is way more than school or college teaching since the differentiating
factor is Research (plus mentoring students in their projects). So I would love to term University Teacher
as a Professor who enjoys learning, researching, mentoring and teaching at the same time and inspires a
generation after generation to learn how to think and apply knowledge, skills and attitudes for the betterment
of the society.
My current teaching philosophy is very much aligned with Outcome-Based Education (OBE) concept, i.e.,
every student can learn but in a different pace and different way. I had always been a believer of letting
students learn in their own way while I as a teacher would facilitate the learning process. I never complaint
about students’ attention or attendance in my class since the age we are living in and COVID-19 taught us
recently that students can learn online, offline, in their own pace. I always want to convey the message to
my students that they have a choice, they are capable, and they must accept that nothing comes free
(compromising something to achieve anything). OBE looks for the learning outcome of students, so am I.
As long as the students learn what is expected, no matter which way or how, I am there to support my
students.
I have almost fourteen years of teaching and another 10+ years of research experience. I have never
compromised of my standard of teaching and always delivered to the best of my knowledge and ability. I
love interacting with sincere students to help them understand and guide them in their projects or thesis. I
am not bounded to any group of students as I try to help everyone who seeks knowledge with sincerity and
honesty.
I strongly believe a University Professor should make a balance between active teaching, mentoring,
research, and professional services. Concentrating only one of them and ignoring others may not be
sustainable and a good practice. For example, if one engages only in teaching but not in research meaning
no new knowledge will be created (through Research) and this eventually would affect the teaching for not
remaining up to date. On the contrary, if one fully engages in research and no active teaching at all, meaning
not disseminating exciting new knowledges to the students and thus students are deprived. Similarly,
engagement in different professional bodies and committees (be as an member of thesis committee or part
of Technical Program Committee of international conferences or member of editorial board of any peer
reviewed journal) allow a University Professor to share knowledge and experience with peers, receive
important feedback, network with them and an opportunity for inter-university/country or inter-disciplinary
teaching-learning or research collaboration of any project of mutual interest.
Given the mentioned philosophy, I have been involved in active teaching, research, mentoring,
administrative works as well as served in different professional bodies and committees. This involvement
helped me to develop myself, and a great opportunity to network with different stakeholders and collaborate
with them.
A Summary of my involvement in many aspects as a University Professor and list of achievements through
these activities are provided below at the end of this report.
