9 TRX Aiding Feature Description

9.1 Introduction

9.1.1 Application
When errors occur to the BCCH carrier or the baseband FH carrier, TRX aiding is performed
automatically to ensure that the cell service is free of interruption before the faulty carrier is
replaced.

9.1.2 Availability
All the versions of the BSC host software support this function.

9.1.3 Restriction and Limitation

None.

9.2 Technical Description

TRX aiding is of two kinds: BCCH TRX aiding and baseband frequency hopping (FH) TRX
aiding.

Non baseband FH cells only have BCCH TRX aiding. Baseband FH cells have both BCCH
TRX aiding and baseband FH TRX aiding.

9.2.1 BCCH TRX aiding

When a MS is in idle mode, the BSC broadcasts network messages to the BTS. The BTS
broadcasts them on the BCCH. The BCCH is a kind of low capacity channel that sends a
message of 23 bytes every 0.235 second.

The messages that the BTS broadcasts on the BCCH include cell selection information,
adjacent cell information, access control information, private channel control information, cell
identification code, location, and system parameters of packet service.

BCCH TRX aiding means that when errors occur to a BCCH carrier in a cell, another carrier
will replace the faulty one to maintain the service. After the errors are cleared, the former
BCCH can be used again.

9.2.2 Baseband FH TRX Aiding

In a baseband FH cell, if a TRX involved in frequency hopping is faulty, the conversations on
the frequency hopping channel will lose some voice frames, and the communication quality
will be decreased. To maintain the conversation quality, the BSC starts baseband FH TRX
aiding to switch the cell mode into Not FH. After the fault is cleared, the cell mode can be
changed into FH.

After the fault is cleared, the value of TRX Aiding Function Control is set to Allowed &
Recover Forbidden and the cell will enter FH mode automatically.

Automatic recover is of two types: immediate recover (recover right after the fault is cleared)
and recover during resource check (at 3 am).

If the BCCH TRX in the baseband FH cell is faulty, both the BCCH TRX aiding and the
baseband FH TRX aiding will occur. The cell enters Not FH mode. After all the faults are
cleared, the cell enters FH mode and the cell will be initialized.

If the SDCCH dynamic adjustment, full-rate/half-rate dynamic adjustment, or PDCH channel

dynamic adjustment occurred in the cell, the dynamic adjustment channel on the TRXs
involved in TRX aiding will be restored to the channel type in the initial configuration.

z The TRXs involved in the BCCH TRX aiding are the current BCCH TRX and TRX to be aided.
z The TRXs involved in the baseband FH TRX aiding are all TRXs in the cell.

9.2.3 TRX Aiding Process

TRX aiding is mainly about the switchover of three modes: default mode, pre-process mode,
and post-process mode.

The protection of TRX aiding is of two kinds:

z Prehandle protection
To avoid frequent aiding due to frequent TRX interruption.
z Posthandle protection
To provide enough time for the cell handover.

Figure 9-1 shows the process of TRX aiding.

Cell State Check

Cell state check skips the abnormal cells and finds the cells that meet the requirements for
TRX aiding. Triggered by second task, this function checks 128 cells periodically.

The abnormal cells include:

z Uninstalled cells: AIDING_EXPT_CELL_NOT_INSTALL

z Cells not in working state: AIDING_EXPT_IN_INITIAL_PROCESS
z Cells whose OMLs are disconnected: AIDING_EXPT_OML_ABNORMAL
z Cells that do not allow dynamic adjustment:
AIDING_EXPT_DATA_ADJUST_DISABLE
z Cells whose aiding state is not the default state: AIDING_EXPT_NOT_AIDING_BUTT
z Cells with initialization time less than 15 minutes:
AIDING_EXPT_INITIAL_PROTECT

Having found the normal cell, the TRX aiding process begins. During the process, the TRX
state is checked first to determine the aiding type.

Feature Description 9 TRX Aiding

TRX State Check

The TRX state is checked to determine the type of TRX aiding.

The conditions of each TRX aiding type are as follows:

z Main BCCH TRX aiding

− TRX aiding is allowed.
− The operation status of the main BCCH is DISABLED.
− The available status of the main BCCH is POWER_OFF, FAILED,
NOT_INSTALLED_REAL, or DEPENDENCY.
z Main BCCH TRX Aiding switchback
− TRX aiding switchback is allowed.
− The current main BCCH TRX is not the main BCCH TRX in the initial
configuration.
− The operation status of the main BCCH in the initial configuration is ENABLED.
z Baseband FH TRX aiding
− TRX aiding is allowed.
− The cell is a baseband FH cell.
− No baseband FH occurred before.
− The operation status of one of the TRXs involved in baseband FH is DISABLED, and
its available status is POWER_OFF, FAILED, NOT_INSTALLED_REAL, or
DEPENDENCY.

When the main BCCH TRX aiding and baseband FH TRX aiding occur in a cell, the cell only regards
the FH TRX aiding as valid and stops baseband FH.

z Baseband FH TRX aiding switchback

− TRX aiding switchback is allowed.
− Baseband FH is not recovered. The baseband FH cell is set to No FH.
− The operation status of the original main BCCH is ENABLED, which means the
original main BCCH is recovered.
− The operation status of all the TRXs involved in baseband FH is ENABLE.

After the TRX state is checked, the process exits if TRX aiding is not required or the TRX
Aiding is not allowed. Otherwise, the pre-processing timer with the length of 60 seconds is
triggered.

Pre-Handling TRX Aiding

After the pre-handling timer expires, the pre-handling of TRX aiding begins.

Issue 03 (2007-12-21) Huawei Technologies Proprietary 9-5

M900/M1800 Base Station Subsystem
9 TRX Aiding Feature Description

After the pre-handling begins, the TRX state is checked again to ensure that the result of last
check is accurate. If the main BCCH TRX aiding is required, the search for the aiding TRX
begins.

Searching for the Aiding TRX

The BSC lists all the available TRXs in the candidate queue and orders them according to
their priorities. The TRX with the highest priority is used as the candidate TRX for main
BCCH TRX aiding.

The following TRXs are excluded in the candidate TRXs.

z The current main BCCH TRXs

z The TRXs not in the same TMU with the main BCCH TRXs configured initially
z The TRXs whose operation status is DISABLED
z The TRXs that cannot exchange frequencies with the original main BCCH TRXs

The method to determine the priority of a TRX is as follows:

Each TRX is assigned to a byte (the initial setting is 0XFF). Each bit is a function support bit.
If the related conditions are met, the value of the bit is 0. The TRX with the lowest byte value
has the highest priority.

Figure 9-2 shows how to determine the TRX priority.

Figure 9-2 Determining the TRX priority

Table 9-1 shows the meaning of each bit that determines the TRX priority.

Feature Description 9 TRX Aiding

Table 9-1 Bits that determine the TRX priority

Bit Meaning

0 Bit0=0: The candidate TRX has no PDCH.

1 Bit1=0: The candidate TRX has no CBCH.
2 Bit2=0: The candidate TRXs and the original main BCCH TRXs have the same
send mode and receive mode.
The RF send modes that the BTS3012 DTRU supports are No Combining, Power
Booster Technology (PBT), Wide Band Combining, and Diversity Transmitter.
The RF receive mode that the BTS3012 DTRU supports are Independent
Receiver, Dividing Receiver, and Four Diversity Receiver.
The send and receive modes that other types of BTS support are 0XFF.
3 Bit3=0: Both the original main BCCH TRXs and the candidate TRXs support
EDGE, or neither the original main BCCH TRXs nor the candidate TRXs support
EDGE.
4 Bit4=0: The candidate TRXs are in the underlaid subcell.
If the cell is a concentric cell, the main BCCH TRXs are usually in the underlaid
subcell. These TRXs have a wide coverage area. If errors occur to the main BCCH
TRXs, the coverage area of the cell decreases.

As the cell is initialized when TRX aiding happens, the current conversations in the cell must
be switched into another cell. After pre-handling, the post-handling timer (10 seconds) starts
to ensure that there is enough time to switch the conversions into another cell.

Post-Handling TRX Aiding

After the post-handling timer expires, the post-handling of TRX aiding begins. Post-handling
includes DB update, alarm sending, and cell re-initialization request.

z DB update: to update the information of BCCH TRX aiding and baseband FH TRX
aiding. The GPRS should be informed to reset the cell after the DB update.
− Update the information of BCCH TRX aiding: to inform the GPRS to exchange TRX
information, refresh the initial values of exchange aiding TRXs and the TRXs to be
aided, update the global variable of aiding information, and update the RR channel
type.
− Update the information of baseband FH TRX aiding: to update the information such
as the global variable of aiding information, initialized channel conversion, and RR
FH data.

z Alarm sending: to send alarms such as main BCCH TRX aiding alarm, main BCCH
aiding switchback alarm, TRX aided to overlaid subcell alarm, baseband FH TRX aiding
alarm, and baseband FH TRX aiding switchback alarm.
z Cell re-initialization: Both the main BCCH TRX aiding and the baseband FH TRX
aiding need cell initialization. For the main BCCH TRX aiding, all the attributes except
the AMR support and RF transceiver mode will be exchanged during the initialization.

Suspending TRX Aiding

To avoid process conflict during the resource check or dynamic configuration, the TRX aiding
process is suspended by force. The pre-processing timer and post-processing timer are
stopped.

Controlled by second task, the TRX aiding restarts when the next cycle of check begins.

Other Functions
TRX aiding also supports many test functions, such as using debug codes to change the
protection time of initialization, printing the change of aiding status, and tracing the cause of
aiding suspension.

9.3 Function Configuration

To configure the TRX aiding strategy, proceed as follows:

Step 1 In the initial data configuration work mode, select a cell from the Object List pane.

Step 2 In the Cell Property tab page, click Default Data in the Advanced Cell Property area.
