Biography of KH. Abdul Wahab Hasbullah Founder of NU (Nahdlatul Ulama).

Kyai Haji Abdul Wahab Hasbullah was born in a rice pond in Jombang March 31, 1888 AD.
His father, Kiai Hasbullah, was the caretaker of the Tambak Beras boarding school.

Education

For 20 years he studied religion from one pesantren to another. Among them are Langitan
Tuban Islamic boarding school, Mojosari Nganjuk Islamic boarding school, Tawangsari
Islamic boarding school along, Branggahan Kediri Islamic boarding school, Syaikhona Kholil
Islamic boarding school Bangkalan, Tebuireng Jombang Islamic boarding school and
studying in Mecca Al Mukaromah.

In 1916 he founded "Nahdlatul Wathon" and in 1918, he also founded the educational
institution "Taswirul Afkar". Abdul Wahab Hasbullah is a very dynamic, agile, unyielding
and intelligent person. His friends are very many because they are good at getting along with
scholars from various other Islamic organizations.

He became the envoy of Jami'iyyah Nahdlatul Ulama with Sheikh Ghonaim Al Misri and a
student living in Mecca named Kyai Haji Dahlan Abdul Qohar. They then managed to meet
King Ibn Saud in Mecca to submit a request that the teachings of the madhhab be guaranteed
in the forbidden land.

Position

Among NU, Kyai Wahab is the person who initiated the journalistic tradition. Established a
mid-month magazine "Soeara Nahdlotoel Oelama" and served as chief editor for
approximately 7 years. He was also the initiator of the birth of the Jami'iyyah Nahdlatul
Ulama with KH. Hasyim Asy'ari in 1926 in Surabaya, East Java. Served as khatib 'Am
(general secretary) of PBNU when NU was first founded. After KH. Hasyim Asy'ari died, the
position of Rais 'Am (general chairman) was held by Kiai Wahab. He has also been a
member of the BPKNIP (the working body of the Central Indonesian National Committee), a
constituent member and has been a member of the DPR RI and a member of the Supreme
Advisory Council or DPR.

Dead

KH. Abdul Wahab Hasbullah died on Wednesday, July 12, how come it was 1391 Hijriyah or
coincided with December 29, 1971 AD at the age of 83 years. And was buried in the family
cemetery of the Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, Tambak Rice, Jombang, East Java.
