A. Common and Proper Nouns

1. Common nouns are names of people, animals, places and things.
city, book, name

2. Proper nouns are specific names for specific people, animals, places and things.
Proper nouns always begin with capital letters.

B. Singular and Plural Nouns

Plural nouns usually end with ~s or ~es

Most nouns -s cat-cats basket-baskets

End of noun: s, sh, ch, x box-boxes bus-buses

End of noun:: consonant + o -es hero-heroes potato-potatoes

End of noun:: consonant + y -ies baby-babies country- countries

End of noun: f, fe -ves thief-thieves

C. Count and Noncount Nouns

1. Count nouns can be counted with numbers.. Count nouns have both singular and plural
forms.
2. Noncount nouns can’’t be counted with numbers.
Noncount nouns don’’t have plural forms, and they do not use a or an.

D. Articles
1. The words a, an and the are articles.
2. The words a and an mean one, and come before singular nouns.

3. The word the is used for a second mention of a noun.
I see a blue cap. The blue cap is on the bed.
4. The article the is also used for specific nouns or nouns that are one and only.
The earth is round. The sky is blue.
