System Description & Operation

3.1 Introduction

This manual provides instructions and information on operation and maintenance of the Helseth

CPP and corresponding equipment produced by Helseth as. Information on operation and

maintenance of equipment delivered, but not produced by Helseth as, is found in separate manual

from the sub supplier.

The propeller is a controllable pitch propeller with water lubricated stern tube and bearings. The

pitch of the propeller blades is controlled by a pull–rod connected to the pitch mechanism in the

grease lubricated propeller hub. The pull–rod is connected to a servo cylinder positioned between

the propeller shaft coupling and the reduction gear outgoing flange. The servo cylinder is operated

by an oil distribution box (OD–box) positioned on the front side of the outgoing shaft of the

reduction gear. The outgoing shaft of the reduction gear is hollow bored and oil is distributed from

the OD–box to the servo cylinder through pipes going through the hole in the reduction gear shaft.

Oil is distributed into the two chambers of the OD–box from a separate power pack with integrated

proportional valve. Feedback of the pitch position is given by an inductive position sensor

positioned on the OD–box. The system is operated electronically from a remote control on the

bridge via a coupling cabinet with PLS.

3.2 Controllable pitch propeller

The Helseth CPP type 4H is grease lubricated propeller hub. Grease is pressed into the hub

through a plug hole on the forward half of the propeller hub. The pull–rod is lubricated by

grease through a plug hole in front of the propeller shaft. For maintenance instructions see

chapter describing maintenance of propeller hub.

The propeller blades are connected to a CPP mechanism inside the propeller hub. The CPP

mechanism is connected to a pull–rod which again is connected to and operated by a servo

cylinder positioned between the shaft coupling on the forward end of the propeller shaft and the

outgoing gear shaft flange. When the pull–rod is pushed backwards by the servo piston the

pitch on the propeller blades is increased, and vice versa. See the propeller system assembly

drawing for details.

3.3 Water lubricated stern tube and bearings

The propeller system has three water lubricated cut less bearings. One positioned in the shaft

bracket just in front of the propeller hub, second positioned in the support bracket and third is

positioned in the aft part of the stern tube. The aft bearing is lubricated by seawater passing

through the gap between the bearing and the propeller shaft. No forced water circulation is

needed. See the stern tube assembly drawing, shaft bracket assembly drawing & support

bracket assembly drawing for more detail.

3.4 Shaft coupling and servo cylinder

The propeller shaft coupling is mounted on the forward end of the propeller shaft and is

connecting the propeller shaft to the servo cylinder. The shaft coupling is of SKF shrink-fit

type. For detailed instructions on how to mount and de–mount the shaft coupling see the

detailed description in the installation manual, or contact Helseth as.

A servo cylinder is connected between the shaft coupling and the outgoing reduction gear shaft.

The servo cylinder is controlled by oil through the OD box positioned in front of the reduction

gear, and ensures correct pitching of the propeller blades. The servo piston is positioned inside

the servo cylinder and is connected to the pull-rod from the propeller via a connection piece

inside the shaft coupling. The pull rod and the connection piece are visible through the oblong

holes on the mid part of the shaft coupling. The theoretical zero pitch position is described in

the shaft coupling assembly drawing. The described position can be measured through the

oblong holes.

3.5 Power pack and OD box (hydraulic system)

Distribution of oil to the servo cylinder is done through the oil distribution box (OD box)

connected to the front side of the reduction gear outgoing shaft. Oil is flushed through the plugs

on top of the main hub of the OD box for distribution to the servo cylinder. The distribution of

oil into the two plugs is operated by a proportional valve positioned on the separate power

pack. Leakage oil from the OD box is returned to the power pack via an oil cooler positioned

on the power pack. The main oil pump for the system is driven by the PTO on the reduction

gear, but taking oil from the oil tank of the power pack. A backup electrical motor is also

positioned on the power pack, driving a backup pump. The backup pump is serving the shaft

brake and working as a booster pump for the PTO driven pump when there is need for extra

servo force (low pitch and high propeller rpm). See the hydraulic diagram in appendix for

details.

3.6 Rudder system

The rudder system consists of a rudder tube, two grease lubricated rudder bearings, a top

mounted rudder bearing plate and a spade rudder. The spade rudder is operated by a steering

gear which is yard supply.

3.7 Emergency operating procedure

If the electrical system fails, it is possible to operate the propeller pitch by the handle on the

proportional valve positioned on the power pack. Ensure that the valve is done potential free

before it is operated manually. The servo system, and mainly the OD box, is leaking.

Consequently the pitch will slowly move out of position if the valve is not operated

continuously.

Cleanliness is of prime importance for correct and trouble–free operation of the system. When

inspecting, servicing or repairing any component or line in the system, make certain that the parts

are kept clean at all times.

4.1 Propeller hub & pull rod

The propeller hub is connected to the conical part of the propeller shaft by the SKF oil injection

method. For mounting and demounting of the propeller hub, please see the installation section.

The propeller hub and pull rod is grease lubricated.

4.1.1 Pitch test

Check pitch of blades against corresponding pull rod position every time the vessel is in dry-

dock to be sure they correspond. On the propeller hub there are four marks, one at the base

of each blade foot. When the corresponding mark on each propeller blade is situated on line

with the mark on the propeller hub the propeller is in the theoretical zero pitch position. The

pull rod shall then be in position as described in the shaft coupling assembly drawing found

in the appendix.

4.1.2 Vibration test

Operate the system while in dry dock and test blades and hub for vibrations that would

indicate malfunctioning, misalignment or wear.

4.1.3 Propeller hub & pull rod lubrication

The propeller shall be refilled with grease once a year, plus every time the vessel is in dry

dock. This is done by pressing grease through the plug hole on the propeller hub situated

right in front of one of the propeller blades. The pull rod shall be lubricated two times per

week through the grease nipple on the forward end of the propeller shaft inside the shaft

coupling. See the shaft coupling assembly drawing for details.

4.2 OD box & servo piston

Do not open the OD box or servo piston for inspection more often than once a year unless

excessive bearing temperatures or noise indicate that adjustments or repairs are required. Every

second year all seals are to be changed by new ones, both in the OD box and the servo piston.

See assembly drawing of OD box and shaft coupling with servo piston in appendix for part

numbers of seals.

4.2.1 Temperature test

Periodically during operation check the temperature of the OD box. Temperature must not

exceed 60 degrees Celsius.

4.2.2 Leak test

Periodically during operation visually inspect the OD box and servo cylinder for oil leaks.

No leakage should be visible.

4.3 Hydraulic system

The recommended viscosity for oil in the hydraulic system is 20 to 50 CST at working

condition. The oil pumps are the restricting components. The absolute outer limits of viscosity

of the oil in working condition is a minimum of 10 CST and a maximum of 100 CST.

4.3.1 Change of oil

The oil in the hydraulic system has to be changed after the first 200 working hours.

Thereafter the oil is changed every 2000 hours.

4.3.2 Strainers

Clean the strainers every day for the first week of operation after installation or overhaul of

the system. Thereafter clean the strainers once a week for a month. Thereafter clean the

strainers every month.

4.3.3 Filter elements

Clean the filter elements one week after initial installation or overhaul of the system.

Thereafter clean the filter elements once a month.

4.3.4 Lubrication of stern tube

The stern tube is water lubricated, in an open system. Water is circulated by forced

circulation inserted through one of the plug holes in front of the stern tube. The stern tube is

open in the aft and water can flow freely into the sea. Sea water can be used for lubrication.

Water amount is min. 30 L/min. cooling water should not be supply from engine. It should

be supply from separate pump. (Not from the engine)

4.3.5 Lubrication of rudder tube

The rudder tube is grease lubricated. After mounting of the rudder into the rudder tube the

rudder tube is lubricated by pressing grease into the plug hole at the top of the rudder tube.

The rudder tube shall be lubricated two times per week. See the rudder assembly drawing

for details.

A list of recommended types of grease can be found in the appendix.

4.3.6 Lubrication of shaft bracket & support bracket

Shaft bracket and support bracket are water lubricated. Sea water can be use. Minimum

distance between shaft bracket and propeller hub (forward face) should be 15 mm which

allow enough water flow to bracket bearing. Water amount for shaft and support bracket

should be minimum 30 L/min.

• Tre akselkoblingen tilbake til enden på opptrekkshylsen er jevn
med framenden på akselen (Fig. C).
Pass på at smørenippelen på akselenden er tilgjengelig fra en av
inspeksjonsslissene i akselkoblingen.
• Skru mutteren tilbake ca. 4-6mm. og blås koblingen løs fra
opptrekkshylsen. Når koblingen er løs settes den lett tilbake på
opptrekkshylsen (med håndkraft), og mutter skrues inn til stempelet
stopper mot koblingen (Fig. D). Stempelet står mot koblingen når
det er Xmm. fra enden av koblingen inn til stempelet (Fig D).
• Tilslutt oljepumpene (Fig. D).
• Når opptrekket starter er det viktig at det pumpes olje inn på konen
kontinuerlig. Koblingen er fullt opptrukket når bakkant på kobling
og stempel flukter (Fig. E).
• Når koblingen er fullt opptrukket slippes oljetrykket på konen og
deretter på stempelet. Fjern oljepumpene. Skru mutteren inn til
stempelet stopper mot koblingen (mål X gjelder). Lås av mutteren
med låsebrikken og plugg oljeløpene.
OBS! Oljeløpene må ikke plugges før etter at stempelet står mot
koblingen slik at oljen i løpene kan renne ut (Fig F).

PULL-UP DISTANCE = 4H100=11.2


• Make sure all surfaces that are touching are cleaned.
• Push the shaftcoupling onto the shaft (Fig. A) as far back as needed
(Fig. B) to connect the pullrods according to dimensions given in
the assembly drawing further back in the instruction manual.
• Push the coupling forward until the forward end of the pull-up
sleeve is smooth with forward end of the shaft (Fig C). Make sure
that the grease nipple on the shaftend is lined up with one of the
inspection slits in the coupling.
• Unwind the nut 4-6mm. and blow the coupling of the pull-up
sleeve. When the coupling is loose of the sleeve it is put back onto
the cone (with handpower), and the nut is turned until the piston
stops against the coupling (Fig. D). The piston sits against the
coupling when it is Xmm. from the end of the coupling to the piston
(Fig. D).
• Connect the oilinjectors (Fig. D).
• When the pull-up begins it is important to pump oil onto the cone
continuously. The coupling is fully pulled up when the aft end of
the coupling is flush with the piston (Fig. E).
• When pull-up is completed the oilpressure on the cone is released
and then on the piston. Remove the oilinjectors.
Turn the nut until the piston stoppes against the coupling (dimesion
X is used). Lock the nut with the lockingwasher and plug the
oilholes.
NOTE! The oilholes must not be pluged before after the piston is
against the coupling so that the oil can be drained of (Fig. F).

Before end stops are set, the gearbox servo is not to be used. If this is done it may cause
damage to components in the propeller hub.

1. Connect pull rods according to drawing no. 2022093.


2. At start up the propeller/gearbox servo is adjusted to neutral (”0”-pitch) position.
3. Note a reference point for measuring the movement of the pull rod in the coupling.
NOTE! The pull rod movement for propeller systems type 4H/4T/4TX is A for forward
and B for aft.
4. Adjust the propeller to position full forward (measure A) according to the reference point,
and set end stop on the gearbox for this position. Repeat procedure for aft (measure B).
5. After testing, the end stop for forward pitch can be fine tuned to achieve correct load on
the engine / desired speed.
