District Tree-Planting
District Tree-Planting
V. RATIONALE:
Deforestation in the Philippines primarily began in the 1960s and has since
destroyed nearly 90% of the forest, leaving our country vulnerable to the impact of
climate change and global warming given our tropical climate, topography and
geographic location, population density, and socio-economic conditions. As more
forest is lost, biodiversity drops, plant, and animal species go extinct, and
indigenous communities lose the productivity of their land.
Substantial actions are being commenced nationally to apprehend the
continuous decline of our environment. Our national and local governments,
including benevolent individuals and private organizations are initiating intensive
efforts to help in mitigating the deleterious effects of climate change and global
warming. The key, though, is a dramatic and unified action to affect a solution to
this worsening problem.
Trees are the lungs of our planet. Trees lessen global warming by
sequestering million tons of carbon per year. Trees reduce the amount of storm
water runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce
the effects of flooding. Many species of wildlife depend on trees for habitat. Trees
also add grace and beauty to our schools and community.
Pursuant to the DepEd Order No. 33, s. 2008, entitled “Responding to the
Threats of Climate Change and Global Warming, Through Massive, Intensive, and
Sustained Tree-Planting, Tree-Growing, and Tree-Caring Program”, all public and
private elementary and secondary schools throughout the country are directed to
conduct annual tree-planting, tree-growing, and tree-caring activities involving
learners, teachers, school heads/principals, supervisors, and officials. These
