Come to think of an image of a brick wall. Do you know what is the

O

basic building block of that wall? Now, look at the above diagram, Figure 1
shows a picture of a brick wall and the basic building block of that wall is a
N

single brick. Like a brick wall, a human body is composed of basic building
blocks called cells as illustrated in Figure 2 on the next page.

Cells are the building blocks of life. Every living organism is
essentially made up of one or more cells. Our body has several kinds of
cells, each specialized for a specific purpose. Just as a home is made from a
variety of building materials, the human body is constructed from many cell
types. For example, epithelial cells protect the surface of the body and cover
R
the organs and body cavities within. Bone cells help to support and protect
the body. Cells of the immune system fight invading bacteria. Additionally,
FO

red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. Each of these cell types
plays a vital role during the growth, development, and day-to-day
maintenance of the body. In spite of their enormous variety, however, all
cells share certain fundamental characteristics.
Each cell is made up of many smaller parts of a cell. Some of these
T

parts are common in both plants and animal cells. Some other parts are
specific to either a plant cell or an animal cell. Through the advancement in
O

science and the invention of microscope, the details about cells are being
studied intensively. The cells components and structures are identified. A
N

cell, particularly eukaryotic cell, has three basic parts namely the nucleus,
plasma membrane and cytoplasm. The nucleus controls all the activities of
the other parts that occur within the cell. It contains materials that play a
role in heredity. The plasma membrane encloses the cell and separates
what is inside it from its environment. It controls what goes into and out of

2
the cell. It also allows entry of materials needed by the cell and eliminate
those which are not needed. The cytoplasm consists of a jelly-like
substance where all the other parts of the cell are located. It does not
however, include the area where the nucleus is located. Many different
activities of the cell occur in the cytoplasm. Plant cells have cell walls and
chloroplasts that are not found in animal cells. The cell wall is made of stiff
material that forms the outermost part of plant cells. This gives shape and

LE
protection to them. Vacuoles are present in both plant and animal cells. In
plant cells, they are large and usually occupy more than half of the cell
space. They play a role in storing nutrients and increasing cell size during
growth. Some plant vacuoles contain poisonous substances. Vacuoles also

SA
store water, thereby maintaining rigidity to cells and provide support for
plants to stand upright. Plant cell vacuoles are responsible for the crisp
appearance of fresh vegetables. Vacuoles in animal cells are small and are
called vesicles. They serve as storage of water and food and also function in
the excretion of waste materials. Centrioles are only found in animal cells
R
and have a role in cell reproduction. Mitochondrion is the powerhouse of
the cell. It produces energy necessary for each and every single cell to
FO

perform their jobs. Golgi body/apparatus is the packaging center of the cell,
it sorts, modifies, packages cell products where they are needed. Rough
endoplasmic reticulum has attached ribosomes that manufacture
proteins. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum contains no ribosomes and is
the fat and lipids maker. Ribosomes are the manufacturer of proteins in the
T

cell. Nucleolus is the structure within the nucleus that produced

O

ribosomes. Lysosomes are the suicide bags of the cell and they destroy cell
debris that are not useful anymore. Chloroplast, which is only present in
plant cell, is the green organelle responsible for manufacturing food in the
N

process called photosynthesis.

Activity 1. Cell Riddle
A riddle, aka "bugtong" in Filipino , is a mystifying, misleading, or
puzzling question posed as a problem to be solved or guessed. Items 1 to 10
R
are riddles related to the different parts of a cell. In this activity, read and
analyze what part of the cell is being described in the riddle. Write your
FO

answer on the blank before the number.

_________1. I hold all the parts of the cell together as they float on me.
_________2. Everyone do what I say. I am in control.
_________3. I used light energy to make food.
_________4. I break down food to release energy.
T

_________5. I am stiff, I protect and give shape to plant cells.

O

_________6. I destroy everything I touch. I clean cell debris that are not
useful.
_________7. I am quite full of water. I am responsible for the crisp
N

appearance of the vegetables.

_________8. If you were me? How would you want me? Soft or rough?
_________9. I am the workbench where proteins get manufactured.
_________10. I control what gets out as well as what comes out.

Now, you learn that a cell has different components and structures
and all of these parts are specialized for a specific purpose. Regardless of
what kind of cell, each is capable of performing all the functions necessary
for a living organism.

Activity 2. Cell-f Check!

In this activity, your understanding why cells are considered as the

LE
structural and functional unit of life will be checked. Answer the questions
that follow.
For item number 1, write your answer on the blank provided after the
question.

SA
1. What is the basic unit or building blocks of all organisms? ______________
For item number 2, check the boxes that contain the best answers (Check
only 7)
2. Why are cells considered as the structural and functional unit of life?
All organisms are made up of cells.
R
All cells are capable to perform all essential functions of life and it is
the sole base for making the entire body of the organism.
FO

Each organism starts its life as a single cell.

All functions that take place inside the body of organisms are
performed by the cells.
Cells are specialized to perform various tasks.
Only plants have cells and they are not alive.
T

All animals have cells that live and breathe.

O

The cell itself is the smallest fundamental unit of structure and

function in living organisms that is considered completely alive.
The cell is an important component of every living organism. It is
N

considered as the basic structural and functional unit of life. Cell is thought
as a structural unit of life because all living organisms are made up of cells.
These cells provide structure to our body. The number, characteristics and
distribution of the cell varies in each organism however each part of the cell
has a unique job to perform. Cell also believed to be a functional unit of life

since it is all functions of the body (physiological, biochemical, genetics, and
other functions) are carried out by the cell.
Activity 3. Build Me Up!
In this activity, you will be able to construct a paragraph using the
words inside the box below describing why the cell is considered the basic
structural and functional unit of all organisms.
