Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Mathematics: Number Sense

Objectives:
Students will be able to use written numerals to represent and identify groups of objects
Students will be able to count values up to one hundred
Students will be able to construct images to represent a number value
State Standards:
K.NS.2 Count forward by ones beginning from any number less than 100.

K.NS.3 Read numbers from 0 – 20 and represent a number of objects 0 – 20 with a written
numeral.

Context: This particular lesson will allow students to gain a basic understanding of number
sense. Prior to introducing number sense up to one hundred, students will learn how to count up
by one’s from any number before fifty. This will prepare students for the new lesson being
introduced because they will already have somewhat of number sense skills. After this lesson
students will begin to learn how to count by 10’s, they will be well prepared because they
already know how to count by one’s.
Data: Students will be separated into three groups, which will be low, middle, and high. The
groups will be based off last lessons exit ticket. Those who showed a strong sense of
understanding the material will be placed in the high group, those who showed a poor
understanding will be in the low group, and those who showed somewhat of an understanding
will be in the middle group. The data from these groups will be collected through two Nearpod
activities and a worksheet.
Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers, worksheets,
diagrams, textbooks, etc.)

Procedures:
Introduction (5 minutes): When students enter the classroom, they will be instructed to
hang their backpacks up and hand in their permission slips. Students will then sit in their
assigned seats and the teacher will begin to review last week’s lesson about counting numbers up
to fifty. The teacher will then ask the students if they have any questions about the previous
lesson. Then the teacher will pull up number flashcards on the smartboard, the students will
shout out the number that appears on the screen. After ten of these quick flashcard questions the
teacher will write the two Nearpod codes needed for today’s lesson up on the whiteboard using a
marker. One code will be labeled group game and the other will be labeled teacher/student work,
therefore the students will know what each code is for. The teacher will then explain what
today’s lesson includes, and then the teacher will break the class up into three groups.

Teacher Directed (10 minutes): This group will be instructed to grab there I pad from
their cubbies and open the Nearpod app. The students will enter the join code presented on the
whiteboard labeled teacher/student work. The teacher will display images on the board that
include different amounts of objects and the students will be asked to type their answers out on
Nearpod. For example, the teachers show an image of twenty-five ducks, the students will count
the ducks and type and post their response on Nearpod. If a student incorrectly answers the
question the teacher will count out loud and point to the objects while counting and explain why
that is the correct answer. Before students leave this group, the teacher will tell them what group
they will be moving to next.
Collaborative (10 minutes): This group will grab their I pads and open up the Nearpod
app then enter the join code shown on the whiteboard labeled group game. Students will compete
against each other in a fish game. The game will start by the student’s character being at the
bottom of the ocean and every time they answer a question correct the character will swim up.
The student’s goal is to make it above sea the quickest. Once the game ends students in the group
will discuss their thoughts about the online game.

Independent Digital (10 minutes): This group will be asked to grab their I pads and open
up the YouTube app. Students will watch the short video “what is number sense” then be asked
to complete the worksheet based on number sense up too one hundred. The worksheet includes
five number sense questions.

Closure (5minutes): Students will be instructed to clean up and return their I pads to their
cubbies then return to their assigned seats. The teacher will ask the students what they thought
about each activity and the lesson as a whole. The teacher will also ask if any students have
questions they would like to ask. The teacher will give a quick overview on the lesson and
inform students about the upcoming lesson. The teacher will wrap up the lesson by asking
students to complete the exit ticket worksheet.

Rationale:
Multimedia 1 includes the Nearpod app. This app is excellent for student learning
because you can customize and create a lesson plan or activity. The app also includes
many different functions such as different question types (multiple choice, short
response, matching etc), educational games, videos, interactive activity’s etc. The app
makes it extremely simple to design a lesson that support student learning, teacher
standards and objectives. I know this app is of high quality because it scored high when
being compared to the app evaluation rubric. The app allows all types of learners to
benefit because it has all grade levels and customizable activities.

Multimedia 2 is a video found on the YouTube app; this piece gives students a visual
representation of the knowledge they need to accumulate. This video supports student
learning because it gives a clear in-depth explanation of number sense and gives prime
examples. This piece of multimedia gives the freedom of picking out exactly what you
are looking for, therefore it will align with your standards and objectives. I know this
piece is of high quality because I reviewed it myself, but it’s not sometimes I would use
all the times because students only observe what is going on, they don’t get to interact or
respond to the material being presented, which is why it’s important to have discussions
after viewing videos. YouTube videos are great for all leaders because it’s extremely
induvial, students can watch videos based on their needs.
