FACULTY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

INDUSTRIAL TRAINING REPORT

MUHAMMAD ZAKWAN BIN ZAKARIA

(2019448238)
ABSTRACT
The internship reports in broad-spectrum contain four chapters in which I attempt to
explain my experience in my hosting company over 17 weeks and 3 days. The content of
all chapters is broadly explained, and it is founded on the practical foundation of completed
site work to further deepen understanding gained over the five semesters of theoretical
Civil Engineering education.

In the first chapter, I will go over the company's history, including its mission, vision, and
the project that is being run through the company consultation. In this chapter, I include my
hosting company's history and future plans, as well as its official address. As a result, the
company's details are provided so that the reader can easily understand and access the
company.

The second chapter, which explains my overall internship familiarity, is the most sought-
after. This can be considered the primary chapter as it contains a record of the overall work
that I have completed. It highlights what I've been doing as well as the main works of the
construction industry.

After explaining all of the preceding chapters, I proceed to the third chapter and explain the
main benefits of the internship class in terms of various aspects and areas. It is obvious that
the internship has benefits in terms of improving skills and abilities as a whole. The
benefits and gains of the internship are summarised and priced in order to capture the
attention of readers and evaluators.

The fourth and final chapter discusses the project that our company is working on and
offers suggestions. I get many things on the site that are appropriate and inappropriate for
work in building construction, so I comment and make recommendations in some
conditions and workings.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1. INTRODUCTION

Industrial training is one of the requirements for completing a diploma from

Universiti Teknologi MARA in any program, including my course, which is
Diploma in Civil Engineering. Before completing our diploma, we are required to
complete one of our part of syllabus at least 18 weeks of industrial training program
beginning 24 March until 27 July 2022 with 9 credit hours within semester six for
the awarding of a Diploma in Civil Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Mara
Kampus Permatang Pauh, Pulau Pinang. In addition, to undergo this industrial
training, students will be placed in companies involved in the fields of civil
engineering, either private or government sector that have been applied by the
students themselves.

Industrial training provides students with an opportunity to learn in the real

working environment. Students are able to adapt their theoretical expertise to real
world situations. Industrial training is an important part of developing the practical
and technical skills needed in the engineering sector, as well as assisting with future
jobs. The objective of the industrial training that student has undergoing is that to
expose the student with the working environment outside of the university that is
more challenging and fuller of pressure that will be useful in the future. Other than
that, student get the chance to apply all of the knowledge they have when learning
from university to a real-life situation. Besides that, student also get work
experience that will add value to their resume to help them get a job when they
graduate.

Furthermore, Industrial training also helps students develop individual

personalities, communicate more effectively, develops student discipline as students
exercise strong work ethics and regulations, and provides exposure to the work
environment. In addition, industry training can enhance students' self-confidence

4
and motivate them to continue their careers in the field of their choice after
completing their industry training and studies at University Teknologi MARA.

TANJUNG CHALI, MB ALOR SETAR, KEDAH' to monitor the progress of work
being carried out. On the last day, I have met with the Human Resources
Department, Industry Supervisor and staff to report and fill the form as a sign of my
completion as a practical student in the Department of Development and Public
Works at MBAS.

2.3. CONCLUSION

Overall, industrial training is crucial for students majoring in civil engineering

courses to gain experience and learn new skills. Students can also apply what they
studied at Universiti Teknologi Mara into practise in the job. Furthermore, the range
of lessons taught at university in the past, both theoretical and practical, differs in
the job. As a result, students can gain new knowledge that is not taught at
universities.

Furthermore, throughout this professional training, students can learn about

workplace ethics and processes. Students can also learn how to communicate with
co-workers and other employees. Students will gain a clear understanding of
occupations in the field of civil engineering as a result of this.

CHAPTER 3: TECHNICAL REPORT

3.1. INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, students must write a technical report based on their chosen
project, which was conducted at their industrial training sites. Students are required
to complete their projects in accordance with the processes and procedures
established by their company. Students must also discuss the challenges
encountered and the solutions that must be implemented throughout the work.
Furthermore, students must explain their project method as well as the knowledge
and experience they received. Throughout this work also students must discuss the
aspects of work which they have observed, as well as indicate their involvement in
their project work.

Since I was placed in MBAS to undergo industrial training at the government

company, the work I have to do is some observation of the construction work which
according to the law is said to have been done by a practical student cannot be
approved on site because the data obtained by the students during the inspection
may not be accurate in terms of technique and only the data obtained from the
authorized official is recognized to be taken as a reference. Therefore, this technical
report is made solely based on the observations and explanations from the site
engineer and assistant engineer in charge of the project as well as the research of the
Bill of Quantities and project drawings that I have studied before going to the site to
observe what has been done on the site according to the plan that has been made.

Therefore, I was involved in multiple projects that assigned by the department to

me as an observer. The projects are done mostly on the implementation of
maintenance works. On the first week of my Industrial Training, I was assigned to
participate in monitoring project which is 'PROPOSAL TO BUILD TOILET IN
MEDAN SELERA TMN BANDAR BARU, POKOK SENA' which is the project
that I have chosen to explain the work process in this technical report.

27
3.2. PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED AND HOW TO OVERCOME IT

This 'CADANGAN MEMBINA TANDAS DI MEDAN SELERA TMN

BANDAR BARU, POKOK SENA' project is carried out based on complaints made
by hawkers who do business in the Medan Selera to MBAS where this Medan
Selera area is the property of MBAS. Although a complaint has been made, all the
project work processes have not been able to be carried out because MBAS needs to
consider the needs of the surrounding area whether it is necessary or not. Therefore,
the MBAS has made a census of the hawkers in the Medan Selera area. After the
observation is made, it was found that the census helped approve complaints about
the construction of public toilets in the food court. This public toilet was approved
for construction because it is open to the public and also to the hawkers because
there are no toilets available around the area yet.

After identifying the problems faced by hawkers in the area, the site plan has been
considered from various aspects. Among the aspects that are seen to carry out the
project are the type of toilet room that needs to be provided and the ability of the
toilet to channel sewage to the nearest area to prevent the occurrence of blocked
drainage which causes the surrounding area to smell and leak. Drawings on site
locality, toilet design and toilet specifications as well as bill of quantities is also one
of the aspects considered before being made and proposed to the mayor as an initial
project proposal. The project proposal was made to obtain the confirmation and
approval of the mayor based on the characteristics and estimated budget given to
carry out the work of toilet construction.

After the proposal being approved by the mayor, the issuance of a quotation
advertisement for a week was also made to find the potential bidders before being
selected based on the characteristics required by MBAS who will handle this project
as a subcontractor. This project is implemented with an allocation worth of
RM50,000 according to the Bill of Quantities that has been made. Preliminary work
has begun to start the project to build a toilet at Medan Selera Taman Bandar Baru.

28
3.2.1. THE WORK PROCESS BEING CARRIED OUT

 Ground Floor Structure Work

The toilet construction work started with the work of making the structure of the
lower floor where it started with the work of digging the ground to the proposed
level for the preparation of the foundation work as per the drawings. This soil
adjustment is done by setting out the soil so that it has an even soil level. After the
completion of levelling the soil, the digging of the raft foundation and soil beam is
done and the hardcore layer under the raft foundation is also compacted and levelled
as well as the sand layer under the raft foundation and apron floor. The work of
digging the foundation of rafts and ground beams has been done as shown in the
drawing where the thickness of well compacted hardcore is 6 inches.

 Concrete Work & Framework

Concrete work has been done as the base of the toilet where the concrete grade used
is grade 25. Reinforcement concrete footing and stumps were also made based on
the engineering details drawings. Therefore, after the completion of the raft
foundation and ground beams work, a layer of iron mesh (A6) for the concrete floor
and apron is installed where both have a thickness of 100mm. Framework was also
done on the column of the toilet which has a 9 column in total with the height of
2743mm. A concrete ramp that has a size of 1300mm x 2750mm with an iron mesh
layer, 25mm thick groove line has been made facing the toilet.

29
 Brickwork & Roof Work

Trusses were also completely done by using the roof frames made off C channel
purlins. The truss structure contains 50 mm x 75 mm x 0.2 mm thick rafter and 50
mm x 100 mm x 0.3 mm thick rafter. Brickworks were done using the 112.5 mm
thick bricks for both exterior and interior walls. The roof installation was done using
a metal deck type roof which is installed on the roof frame structure that has been
made together with the components associated with it as approved by the
enforcement. The roof is also fitted with an asbestos ceiling to be bracketed to rafter
by using asbestos type decorative asbestos fascia board. The installation of 75mm x
100mm x 3mm thick RHS water tank floor bearer was made before the installation
of polyethylene water tank (2000 gallons) complete with easy -to -open lid at the
place specified by the enforcer. Brickworks were also halfway done as the upper
back site was still in progress to ensure the installation of the water tank could be
done smoothly. Installation of metal deck-type roof pieces installed on the steel
frame structure and related components. As recorded in the BQ, the installation of
aluminium fixed louvres had to be made on the upper roof wall, however it was
replaced with brick installation.

 Walls & Finishing

Inside the BQ installation of 1200mm x 600mm decorative PVC foam panelling

with a 50mm x 50mm MS frame is done. However, PVC foam panelling is changed
to a type of decorative concrete. In the toilet too, the construction of 100mm thick
clay-type bricks as a toilet fence. External wall coating with one coat of base paint
and two coats of 'weather bond' paint. In addition, the installation of matt ceramic
tiles size 600mm x 300mm on the floor surface while tiles of the same size of a
different type, namely the glazed type, are installed on the inner wall surface.

30
 Doors & Windows

According to the original BQ, the use of 2 compact laminate type doors, each with a
size of 1200mm x 2100mm and 900mm x 2100mm, is used as a toilet door.
However, the material type of this door was changed to a steel type door. For the
windows, the installation of 600mm x 1200mm pane glass windows and the frame
has been made.

 Hygiene Equipment

A 600 x 600mm manhole has been made by connecting it with the main drainage
from the food court to a large ditch next to the food court. A 6PE septic tank is also
installed connecting the manhole that has been installed. It was originally planned
that the amount of the manhole would be 4 manholes and a septic tank. However,
the manhole made on the site is only 2 as to keep the flow of the wastewater short
and it's also connecting with the nearest pipeline which is the food court. UPVC
pipe that has a 2’ diameter UPVC outlet pipe drain in the squat toilet. Squat toilets
and related equipment have also been installed. The installation of the toilet
completed with seat pad, trap, cleaning tank as well as bracket and overflow pipe
has been done. The hand bidet installer where the type that has been agreed upon
has been installed as well as the floor trap had been installed. The concrete
countertop has also been completed by using a countertop that is ready to be made
with the sink. As this is also changed made which is differ from the BQ as in BQ
the counter top is the self-made on with the size of 610mm x 800mm using the
concrete.

31
3.3. EXPERIENCE GAINED

During my industrial training at MBAS, I have learned many things not only from
this project but from other projects as well. Every project that is carried out has a
sequence that needs to be followed where the first step is making of the proposal
once there is a complaint by the citizen to proceed with the work needed to be done
based on the law that every government company must obey. The proposal contains
important things such as Bill of Quantities, Drawings and Quotation. As in the site,
each sequence has different solutions to different problems. Sometimes the
problems encountered cannot necessarily be solved with book theory alone like
what I learned while at UiTM where the learning process is applied theoretically
before being put into practice at the location site. Creative and critical thinking is
necessary to solve problems and a good observation of the surroundings strengthens
the reasoning for the solution given to a problem.

Furthermore, I have learned on how to increase my communication skills. During

my industrial training, I learnt how to communicate with people surrounding me,
which is the staff from the other divisions, assistant engineers and my industrial
supervisor including my industrial training fellows from other institutes of study. I
also communicate with the site workers to collect more knowledge from them. I
also asked them a lot of questions about the projects which were unclear to me
during obervation. The way the staff treated me as if I was a family member made
my self-esteem high by having greater confidence and courage to interact with
specific people or new people. From here, I was able to learn to exchange ideas,
obtain new knowledge and experience as I had confidence in communicating.

32
Apart from that, I learned that being a dedicated person in doing a job is also
important. With dedication, all work can be done thoroughly. Therefore, any errors
can be reduced. I have applied this attitude to carry out the tasks given. I have also
honed my skills in the use of AutoCAD where I was instructed by the assistant
engineers in charge of drawing any projects. This is a good opportunity to be taught
by people working in this industry through the narration of their experiences,
through physical teaching or in the form of discussion. What is most important is
that there are still many things still need to be learned to reach the level they have
reached now.

3.4. CONCUSION

Finally, students who participate in industrial training in their company can receive
new knowledge and work-related experience in the field of civil engineering. Thus,
by participating in a project sponsored by their firm, students can gain the ability to
participate in and manage a project alongside their company's personnel. Students
can also learn how to manage a project, communicate effectively, prepare
paperwork, work on-site, use tools and technology, and use critical and creative
thinking to problem solving.

Aside from that, students can sense the working environment at the office or on-
site. Not all students, however, had the same experience. They receive industrial
training in a variety of settings, including the government and as consultants and
contractors. Despite working in diverse locations, students will obtain experience
and knowledge in accordance with the objectives of industrial training and will be
aware that employment in this field of engineering has a broad reach.

33
CHAPTER 4: CONCLUSION

4.1. INTRODUCTION

Industrial training is an important requirement for students in Civil Engineering

courses at all levels of higher education in institutions of higher learning. This is
because industrial training helps increase the level of graduates in terms of
knowledge and experience for work. An industrial training program has been
introduced to strengthen the required skills of students in the field of engineering.
Industrial training courses provide learning opportunities for students in the world
of work to receive practical experience to enhance their skills, experience and
knowledge regarding jobs involving engineering. This course refers to exposing
students to the actual experience of engineering work and engaging students in civil
engineering projects before graduation.

During a four-month training period at MBAS (Kedah), I have gained a lot of

knowledge and skills, especially in the civil engineering field. As stated, the
objective of industrial training is to encourage the students to apply the skills and
knowledge gained at university and put them to use at the company where they
work. In addition, there are also similarities and differences between what I learned
at university compared to the company where I work. With this, I was able to find
out that in this field of civil engineering has a very wide scope of learning and
working. Therefore, I was able to explore new experiences and knowledge related to
the field of civil engineering.

34
4.2. LESSONS LEARNED

During my internship, I learned a lot about the job of an assistant engineer at the
Alor Setar City Council. Usually, assistant engineers will receive complaints from
the public regarding public problems such as potholes, poor road conditions,
damage to public facilities, condition of drains and maintenance of public facilities.
From these complaints, the assistant engineer will conduct a site investigation to
verify and take appropriate steps to resolve the problem at the site of complaint. If
maintenance is necessary, the MBAS will call the existing contractor and provide
work instructions. If no contractor has been appointed, the city council will issue a
tender or quotation to appoint a contractor. Apart from complaints and maintenance,
there is also a project unit responsible for planning and implementing various
council projects to assist and improve the quality of development throughout the
Kota Setar and Pokok Sena area.

Apart from that, I was also able to learn moral values while I underwent industrial
training at the Alor Setar City Council. Among the moral values that I get are
discipline, responsibility, communication skills, respect, leadership and learning to
give and exchange opinions. I was able to discipline myself by managing my time
wisely, such as coming early to work, finishing work before the deadline and
adopting a work and dress code. Also, when I am given a task, I have to take
responsibility for completing it successfully. I also ask a lot about things that are not
clear about the tasks that need to be done and I also gain a lot of new knowledge
and information. In addition, I also learn to give and exchange opinions during
discussions, whether in the meeting room, on site or in the office. As a result, I can
improve my leadership, communication skills and self-confidence in undertaking
certain tasks. Therefore, by learning these moral values, I am able to become a
student with integrity and moral education that makes myself more quality and
productive.

35
4.3. KNOWLEDGE LEARNED

Alor Setar City Council is the place where I undergo my industrial training for 18
weeks in the engineering department, starting from 24/3/2022 until 27/7/2022.
During my industrial training period at Alor Setar City Council, I have gained a lot
of knowledge and experience working in the engineering department. Among the
knowledge I learned was how to make AutoCAD drawings. The drawing that I have
made are the Medan Selera Taman Bandar Baru plan with specification and design
a gate at Pokok Sena. In addition, I also learned to measure using equipment such as
measuring tapes and measuring wheels during road measuring activities. A
measuring wheel is a construction measuring tool that measures distances while
walking. It is an effective tool that can be used to simply measure a distance. I used
this tool to measure the length and width of pedestrians with the perimeter in the
Persiaran Stargate, Jalan Bandar Baru, Mergong and Komples Perniagaan Seri
Gunung.

Furthermore, I also learned about the MBAS tender and quotation systems. The
system used is an intranet system. The review of the tender is under the contract and
supply system. The system has several parts, namely the first part is general
information, the registration certificate of SSM and the CIDB of the company. The
second part is the category and specialization in the CIDB certificate and the third
part is the work experience of a company. The next part is the company's
organization chart and the last part is information related to the vehicle and
transportation rented or owned by the company. In addition, I also learned about the
MARRIS System. MARRIS system is used for the purpose of recording road data
throughout the state including Jalan Raya Negeri, Jalan Raya Perbandaran, Jalan
Kawasan Perumahan Murah, Lorong Belakang, Jalan Sehala Pulau Pelancongan,
Jalan Kampung and Jalan Pertanian. MARRIS System used to record the data of
road name, length and width, GPS coordinate, width of road shoulder and Road
Surface Type (RST) which has been measured and filled into the form before
transferring the information into the system.

36
4.4. SUITABILITY OF ORGANIZATION

If students want to find an industrial training place in the government sector,

students can apply to the Kota Setar City Council. This is because Kota Setar City
Council is a government type company that does work such as maintenance, repair
and upgrading of facilities such as public markets, hawker centers, traffic, roads,
ditches and drains. Apart from that, the Alor Setar City Council is also responsible
for planning and carrying out projects that can help and further improve the quality
of development in Kota Setar and Pokok Sena.

In addition, the atmosphere at work in the engineering department is also very

lively and the employees there are very friendly. The engineering assistants and
engineering directors there have very extensive knowledge and experience in the
field of engineering. They are also kind and they always share their knowledge and
experience. As a result, students can increase their self-confidence and can gain new
knowledge that is related to the work in the field of engineering. Therefore, I
recommend that Alor Setar City Council is a suitable place for students taking a
civil engineering course, especially students taking the field of infrastructure. With
this, students can gain knowledge and experience in the government sector.

37
4.5. LIMITATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Students undergoing industry training have their limits when working in the
company of their choice. This is because students who undergo industry training
have lack knowledge and work experience and they will feel awkward and will
make mistakes. Throughout my industry training at MBAS, there were a number of
tasks assigned to me. I also had difficulty doing some of the tasks given. This is
because I do not have the knowledge and experience to do the task. In addition, the
task must be completed before the deadline. Besides that, I would also like to
suggest some recommendations to students, universities and companies. For
students, they need to make a complete preparation before they start industry
training at the company of their choice. This needs to be considered because the
situation at work is very challenging and the atmosphere is also different than
studying at university. Therefore, students need to be more independent and
disciplined in the chosen industry training place and do the given task well.

Furthermore, for the university as well, they can give suggestions on better and the
latest companies to the students so that they can do industrial training more
effectively. Since the symptoms of COVID-19 hit the country, many companies
have been unable to take students to undergo industry training in their place. The
university can also make courses such as learning to use AutoCAD, designing
structures, site safety and construction management. With help from the university,
students will be easier to find and undergo industry training. Next is a
recommendation for the company. Companies need to provide more opportunities
for practical students to explore more in the field of civil engineering. The company
also needs to explain more clearly about the rules and procedures of the scope of
industry training involving the field of engineering to the practical students so that
they are more alert and readier to undergo industry training.
