ART” (EVERYONE)

Paintings from the Classical Greek Era (PLAZA)


“Paintings during the classical Greek era were most commonly found in vases,
panels and tomb or wall painting” – (MAYORDOMO)
MOST COMMON METHODS OF GREEK ERA ( PLAZA)
 FRESCO – method of painting water-based pigments on a freshly applied
plaster usually on a wall surfaces. Ideal for murals, durable and has a matte
style. (RAMOS)
 ENCAUSTIC – developed to use by Greek ship builders, who used the hot
wax to fill the cracks of the ship. Soon pigments (colors) was added and
used to paint a wax hull. (MARQUEDA)

VASE PAINTING – also known as kerch style or kerch vases ( kerch – kirk)
- Are red, figured pottery name after the place were it was
found. (MUNDIZ)
SHAPES COMMONLY FOUND ARE:
1. PELIKE – wine container.
2. LEKANIS – a low bowl with 2 horizontal handles and a low broad foot.
3. LEBES GAMIKOS – with high handles and lid use to carry bridal bath.
4. KRATER – a bowl use for mixing wine and water. (LAPARAN)
“EXAMPLE OF VASE PAINTING IS JUDGEMENT OF PARIS DURING 370-330 B.C, so
what can you say about their vase painting?” (TRIBACO)
-it was a contest between the three most beautiful of Olympus, Aprodite, Hera,
and Athena for the price of golden apple addressed “to the fairest”. (SABALLA)
-Most common motifs were mostly scenes from the life of women (often
exaggeratedly idyllic), mythological beings that were popular among the people of
the black sea, or a scene from mythical story or event using polychromic

NEXT IS THE PANEL PAINTINGS (PLAZA)
-These are paintings on flat panels of wood. It can be either a small, single piece
or several panels joined together. Most of the panel paintings no longer exist
because of their organic composition. (UBALDO)
THE EARLIEST PANEL PAINTING IS THE PIZZA PANEL (UDTOHAN)
-the pizza panels or pizza tablets are group of painted wooden tablets, found near
Pitsa, Corinthia. (UDTOHAN)
AND LASTLY THE TOMB OR WALL PAINTING (PLAZA)
-tomb or wall painting was very popular during the classical period one example is
the tongue of the diver. (MANTILLA)
-the image depicts a symposium scene on the wall it was painted using a FRESCO
in water base or wax and because it uses water-based materials very few samples
survive. (MAYORDOMO)

GREEK SCULPTURES FROM THE CLASSICAL PERIOD (PLAZA)


-one of the most popular was Hellenistic style which denotes a preference in
sculpture for more elaborated patterns, mannered arrangement of figures and
groups, and an emphasis on the representation of movement for dramatic effects.

EXAMPLE OF GREEK SCULPTURE IS THE MYTHON: THE DISCOBULUS, 450 BC

-shows an attitude of maximum tension, full of compressed energy, and about to
explode an action. (LAPARAN)

GREEK ARCHITECTURE (PLAZA)


-greek architecture was designed primarily as temples to honor the pagan gods,
but these structures was not meant to be accessed by the public. The front and
the back of the temples were nearly indistinguishable for this reason the only
difference being their statuary decorations. (TRIBACO)
-the temple façade would have had a pediment, cornice, metopes, triglyphs,
architrave, and columns. This columns are made up of capitals and shafts with
three different types of capitals to distinguish between. (MARQUEDA)
DORIC – the most simplistic (MANTILLA)
IONIC – with scroll light fixtures; and (MANTILLA)
CORINTHIAN – made up of small leaves surrounding the column (MANTILLA)
-perhaps the most notable work of Greek architecture is the Parthenon,
constructed atop of acropolis in Athens. (MAYORDOMO)
-the temple is doric with different ionic elements within the rear room and the
interior frieze. (MAYORDOMO)
GRECIAN INFLUENCE
-greek art on the whole was an extremely influential period for future artistic
movement the traditions of this era completely inspired the Italian Renaissance a
rebirth of the Classical era inspired by the ancient masters although much of what
originally existed whether it be paintings, bronze sculptures, buildings, or pottery
that failed to survive the centuries. (MUNDIZ)
-Greek art continues to influence the artistic and especially the architectural
world in the modern day. (SABALLA)
