Design of Rectangular Beams

Shear
Controlling Principle:
 If the applied Shear stress exceeds that can be carried by
the section, Shear Reinforcement must be provided.
If:
υa > υc the excess stress of be carried by stirrups
υa = V/bd
υc = ..09 fc’
So:
υs = υa - υc (Shear stress carried by stirrups)
Spacing of the stirrups can be computed by:
S = Av fv Where:
υs b Av = shear area
fv = allowable shear stress of rebar
= fs
Design of Rectangular Beams
Shear
 If the applied Shear stress did not exceed the Shear stress that
can be carried by the section,
υa < υc
then stirrups are not required.

 But, as per NSCP 421.5.3.4:

 Where hoops are not required, stirrups with seismic hooks at
both ends shall be spaced at a distance not exceeding more
than d/2 throughout the length of the member.
NSCP Provisions for Shear
Reinforcement
 Sect 421.5.3.1: Hoops shall be provided in
the following regions of frame members:
1. Over a length equal to twice the member depth
measured from the face of the supporting
member toward the midspan, at both ends of the
flexural member
2. Over a lengths equal to twice the member depth
on both sides of a section where flexural yielding
is likely to occur in connection with inelastic
lateral displacements of the frame
NSCP Provisions for Shear
Reinforcement

 Sect 421.5.3.2: The first hoop shall be

located not more than 50mm from the face
of the supporting member. Maximum
spacing of the stirrups shall not exceed:
1. h/4;
2. 8 times the diameter of the smallest longitudinal
bar;
3. 300mm
Development Lengths and
Standard Hooks
 The development length (ld) is the distance that the rebars
need to extend back into the support in order to transfer the
stresses from rebar to concrete.

the entire development length. The rebar may be bent to
accommodate the required ld. These are called standard hooks
