ART APPRECIATION MODULE 1

SUMMARY OF LESSON 1
ASSUMPTIONS AND NATURE OF ARTS: CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION

I. Definition of Art
Art is the ability or skill of putting things, ideas, and concepts together either manually or
through artificial means. It is the application of the creative skills and the imagination. It
expresses aesthetic ideas in the creation of objects. Art is present in our daily lives as we are
surrounded by a lot of beautiful things. It is man-made and expressed through a certain
material.

II. Assumptions of Art

Art unites people regardless of their culture, race, socio-economic status, political views,
and religious backgrounds. It serves as the universal language in understanding the history
culture, and values of people. It is also a source of beauty, pride and immortality for a culture.
The culture and its concerns are usually reflected through arts. Art tends to preserve the
culture that could be passed on from one generation to another. Thus, works of art will remain
forever even if the artists were long gone.
Art is created by man as a representation of something. Artists create works of art by
duplicating their subjects like nature, person or experiences. They cannot create the same
exact copy but they create a permanent impression of the past. Art is a process of making. It
is very subjective to evaluate a work of art. Therefore, the way we perceive art was influenced
by our personal interests and preferences.

III. Nature of Arts

Art is an expression of feelings, beliefs, values and character made visible in a form. It is
a product of creativity and imagination to create a meaning. It is a planned activity that
requires an artist to prepare materials and arrange it in order to produce a work of art.

IV. Creativity in the Making

Creativity is an act of transforming an idea into something new in a creative and
imaginative way. It requires an output. In order to produce an output, it needs to undergo a
process. It requires an inspiration to create a meaningful work of art. Creating an art starts
from sketching the subject and preparing all the materials needed. The artist then starts
creating the work of art. And it ends through evaluation for the finished product.
