CASING TYPES by Mounting Wise
The Casing , which contains the liquid, increases the efficiency and head energy,
and gives the Customer a means of connecting to the casing with Suction and
Discharge flanges

WEARING TYPES
BEARING HOUSING ASSEMBLY

The purpose of the Bearing Assembly is to support the pump Shaft accurately at the pump centerline, and to absorb the pump
Thrust.

The Bearing Housing usually contains 2 sets of Ball Bearings and a constant oil level.

The Bearing Housing is bolted to, and aligned with the Casing Plate / Cover.

TERMINOLOGY USED IN PUMP FIELD
DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGYS IN PUMP
Flow (Q) – M3/hr or KL/h etc.. Head (m) or Pressure (Bar g)

Q=AxV
H = 10.2 x P
S.g
Q – Flow in m^3/Hr
A – Area in m
H – Head m
V – Velocity in m/sec
P – Pressure (Bar g)
S.g – Specifigravity of Liquid
• Smooth operation of the pump the inlet
velocity to be maintained is 1.5 to 2 m/s on
suction side
• And 4 to 4.6 m/s max on the discharge side
DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGYS IN PUMP
Total Dynamic Head Total Dynamic Head
DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGYS IN PUMP
Suction Head Suction Lift
(Liquid Above centerline of impeller) (Liquid below centerline of impeller)
DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGYS IN PUMP
Cavitation Liquid moves through
decreasing cross-section area (as
in a Venturi).
Liquid velocity increases as its
pressure decreases not only due to
Venturi effect but also frictional
loss.
At the point of minimum cross-
section (impeller eye) velocity is
max and pressure is min.
Pressure drops down further
due to shock & turbulence as the
liquid strikes the edges of impeller
vanes.
Results in creation of low
pressure around the impeller eye
and beginning of impeller vanes.
If the pressure drops below the
vapour pressure of the liquid at
the operating temperature, the
liquid will vapourised.
DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGYS IN PUMP
Suction specific speed is an index number that indicates the ability of a centrifugal pump
to operate under conditions of low NPSHA

NPSHr NSS

< 8,500 Cold Water

8,500 to 13,000 Normal

> 13,000 Special

Affinity Laws

Law 1: Flow is Proportional to Shaft Speed or Impeller Diameter of Pump

Q1/Q2 = (N1/N2) or (D1/D2)

Law 2: Pressure is Proportional to the Square of Shaft Speed or Impeller Diameter

H1/H2 = (N1/N2)2 or (D1/D2)2

Law 3: Power is Proportional to the Cube of Shaft Speed or Impeller Diameter

P1/P2 = (N1/N2)3 or (D1/D2)3

Throttling VS VFD in centrifugal pump

VFD good for Friction dominated system

Throttling good for static head dominated

Brake Kilo Watt (BKW)

• Mechanical power delivered to the pump shaft

Q  H  Specific Gravity Q = Capacity, m3/hr

BKW  H = Total Differential Head, m

h = Efficiency, %
Pump Type Selection
PUMP OPERATION METHOD

• high head applications • high flow applications

• Heads from all pumps at same • flow from all pumps at
flow rate same head
Attention not to exceed the the
downstream pump allowable
suction pressure, working
pressure, and pressure
limitations of the mechanical seal
