CLASSIFICATION OF PUMPS
PUMP
Rotary Reciprocating

PUMP TYPES CLASSIFICATION
Centrifugal Pump
The purpose of the Bearing Assembly is to support the pump Shaft accurately at the pump centerline, and to absorb the pump
Thrust.
The Bearing Housing usually contains 2 sets of Ball Bearings and a constant oil level.
The Bearing Housing is bolted to, and aligned with the Casing Plate / Cover.

TERMINOLOGY USED IN PUMP FIELD
DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGYS IN PUMP
Flow (Q) – M3/hr or KL/h etc.. Head (m) or Pressure (Bar g)
Q=AxV
H = 10.2 x P
S.g
Q – Flow in m^3/Hr
A – Area in m
H – Head m
V – Velocity in m/sec
P – Pressure (Bar g)
S.g – Specifigravity of Liquid
• Smooth operation of the pump the inlet
velocity to be maintained is 1.5 to 2 m/s on
suction side
• And 4 to 4.6 m/s max on the discharge side

DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGYS IN PUMP
Suction Head Suction Lift
(Liquid Above centerline of impeller) (Liquid below centerline of impeller)
DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGYS IN PUMP
Cavitation Liquid moves through
decreasing cross-section area (as
in a Venturi).
Liquid velocity increases as its
pressure decreases not only due to
Venturi effect but also frictional
loss.
At the point of minimum cross-
section (impeller eye) velocity is
max and pressure is min.
Pressure drops down further
due to shock & turbulence as the
liquid strikes the edges of impeller
vanes.
Results in creation of low
pressure around the impeller eye
and beginning of impeller vanes.
If the pressure drops below the
vapour pressure of the liquid at
the operating temperature, the
liquid will vapourised.

Suction specific speed is an index number that indicates the ability of a centrifugal pump
to operate under conditions of low NPSHA
