I. Objectives
- Compare command and obligation

III. Procedure
A. Preliminaries

B. Recapitulation
Encourage students to participate in a game entitled “Make It Roll”
Call three (3) students to roll the dice one by one, the dice contain modal
verbs that show request and suggestion.
Ask each student to construct a sentence using the modal verb that will appear
at the top.
C. Tasks
1. Motivation
a.1 Modals that show command – used in giving an authoritative order or to command
someone.
Might, must, shall, and will are some of the examples of modals that show command.
Examples:
a.2 Modal Verbs that show obligation – used to express obligation. An obligation is a
responsibility or necessity and something that we have to do
Examples of modal verbs are must, have to, should, and ought to
Necessity – have to and must (to express strong obligation)
Negative – mustn’t (must not)
Affirmative – must
Examples:
a.2.1 The Japanese must take off their shoes when entering someone’s house.
a.2.2 The Japanese have to bow 45 degrees to show respect.
a.2.3 In Korea, your left hand should support your right forearm when shaking hands.
After watching the video, instruct the students to paste the example sentences in the graphic
organizer and place them according to their appropriate function.
COMMAND OBLIGATION

Directions: Have the students read and understand the given sentences. Let them identify each as
a command or obligation by clicking the paper in the presentation.
1. In Korea, they must use food in ceremonies, weddings, and birthdays to honor ancestors.
Answer: obligation
2. The Japanese should participate in the fireworks festivals or bon odori festivals during
the summer by wearing yukata.
Answer: obligation
3. The Chinese have to celebrate with the whole country, especially during the Chinese New
Year.
Answer: obligation
5. The Africans shall include shiny threads in their clothes with minimal jewelry as part of
their culture.
Answer: command
IV. Generalization
Have the students share what they have learned from the lesson about modal verbs
that show command and obligation.
V. Application
Let students cite some of their obligations in life. Allow them to choose from the
different roles:
a. as a child (older brother/sister, middle child, younger brother/sister, or only child)
b. as a student (classroom officer/ member of any school organization)
Instruct the students to write their constructed sentences on their whiteboards and
raise them to let their classmates identify the modal verbs used.
VI. Evaluation
ASSESSMENT: Spread the Modals!
Directions: There is an alcohol, and its droplets contain five (5) modal verbs that
show command and obligation. Construct a meaningful sentence for each given
modal verb about following the safety health protocols. Let the students write their
answers on one whole sheet of paper.
VII. Assignment
Ask the students to look for sentences that have nouns as subjects in this given article.
Instruct the students to encircle the nouns in each sentence.
