Exact Location and Geographical Features Chicago, the third largest city in the USA with a population of 2.8 million people, is located in north-eastern Illinois at the south-western tip of Lake Michigan. The Chicago River and the Calumet River flow entirely or partially through Chicago. Sights / Tourist A ttractions SHEDD A QUARIUM : It accommodates more than 25,000 fish.
FIELD M USEUM OF N ATURAL H ISTORY : It was founded in 1893 for keeping the biological and anthropological collections for the World Columbian Exhibition. ART I NSTITUTE : It is the second largest museum in the USA and contains one of the worlds most remarkable art collections. WILLIS T OWER : Its 1451 feet high and has 108 stories. It is the tallest skyscraper in the USA and the fifth tallest in the world and contains an observation deck at the 103 floor which is called Skydeck. ADLER P LANETARIUM : Contains large space science collection. WATER T OWER : It is the second largest Water Tower in the USA and one of the oldest buildings in Chicago NAVY P IER : Located on Lake Michigan. Contains the Chicago Childrens Museum, Chicago Fun House

Industry Before Chicago was incorporated as a town in 1833, the primary industry was fur trading. During the 1850s and 1860s the pork and beef industry became very important. The connections to the Great Lakes and the railroad system were very important for Chicagos development. Today Chicago has the 4th largest GDP of all metropolitan areas in the world and is a center for business and finance. Chicago is also one of the worlds top ten Global Financial Centers. Other important industries are manufacturing, printing, publishing and food processing. Many well-known companies have their headquarters in Chicago e.g. Boeing, Kraft Foods, McDonalds and Motorola. Other Points of Interest Before the First Family moved to the White House, the Obamas lived in Kenwood on the South Side of Chicago.
THE J OHN H ANCOCK C ENTER is not the highest building in Chicago but soon to have the worlds highest skating rink at more than 1,000 feet with a magnificent view. Its opening on January 1st 2011.

Interesting Facts CHICAGO has its name from the Indians, who lived in the area where the city developed. The Indians called a sort of wild onion or garlic Chickagou.
AL C APONE : There is no doubt that Alphonse Al Capone is closely connected to Chicago, where he began his career with bootlegging during prohibition in the twenties. But hardly anyone knows that he established one of the first soup kitchens after the world economic crisis in 1929.
