with 5 Warm-up Exercises

Humans have a need for stories, even scary ones, to make sense of the world
around them. Novelist Emily Barr (@emily_barr) specializes in writing thrillers for
both adults and young adults. She has published numerous novels, and won
various awards for her work, including WHSmith’s New Talent Award.

In this course, Emily teaches you the fundamental elements of writing a

psychological thriller. Write the opening of your own book, a 25-word synopsis,
and plan for the rest of your project with an experienced novelist as your guide.

In this download, Emily shares a set of free warm-up writing exercises to get your
creative muscles moving before a writing session.

FIVE WRITING WARM UPS

Additional Resources

YOU NEED TO GET YOUR WRITING MUSCLES MOVING: TRY ONE OF THESE
EXERCISES.

1. Write an alphabet story: a 26 word story in which each word begins with a
different letter of the alphabet, in order. It’s hard to make them make sense,
but that doesn’t matter. A beautiful city. Dawn emerges. (and so on) Mix up
the alphabet to make it make more sense if you like.

2. You are a piece of cutlery, joining an established cutlery drawer.

Write about your arrival into this strange new world.

3. Two people are in a cafe. One pushes back their chair and storms
out. Write about what happened.

4. Alphabetical dialogue: this is similar to, but easier than exercise

one. Write a page of conversation, where each sentence starts with
the next letter of the alphabet. Eg:
‘Anyway —’
‘But I haven’t nished talking.’
‘Can I just say something?’

5. Look out of the nearest windows. Write without thinking about it. Describe
the scene. If you can see people, give them an identity and write about their
lives.
