Design & fabrication of suitcase car

Project by.

Mr. Rohit Patil

Introduction: -

As the number of cars is increasing day by day issues of heavy traffic & parking space are also

increasing. Because of its larger size of cars they are became difficult to handle in urban areas.

Disadvantages of present vehicles

1) Almost all passenger vehicles run on petroleum products. Sources of petroleum products

are depleting very fast.

2) Space required to park these vehicles is more.

3) Traffic issue is very critical in cities.

4) For small distance travelling common man has no other option, either he has to walk or

hire autos which is not economical for all.

Everyday the number of rise in vehicles on the road is increasing. With this the amount of fossil

fuels is also depleting. If this continues the fossil fuel reserves will be depleted in the years to

come. Also as more number of cars running on fossil fuels are increasing the pollution level in

the air is also increasing. The Cars produce harmful gases as the product of combustion. This is

emitted directly in the atmosphere. Thus as the number of cars is increasing the pollution in

atmosphere is also increasing.

The major problem associated with the present day cars is the parking space. Though pollution

and depleting reserves is big concern the problem of parking space also persists. Due to the lack

of parking space there is unnecessary traffic on road. This creates a lots of problems.

To overcome this issue we need to design small portable vehicle. In this project small portable &

economical vehicle is designed which can be carried by single person like luggage bag or
suitcase. i.e. car is designed & fabricated of the size of suitcase. This suitcase car runs on electric

energy & this vehicle is lightweight so that that can be carried anywhere.

Advantages of suitcase car:-

1) Space required to travel is very less means traffic issue will be resolved at some extent.

2) It runs on electric motor, hence alternate source depleting fossil fuel reserves

3) Car can be folded and carried anywhere.

Objective:-

1) Main objective of this project is to design & fabricate portable & economical vehicle

which can be carried along as a suitcase and can be easily converted into car for

travelling.

2) To fabricate a vehicle such that it uses electric transmission rather than using IC

engine based transmission which makes this vehicle ecofriendly.

Research methodology: -

This project deals with the objective to design and fabricate a light weight electric portable

vehicle which is of the size of suitcase. To drive the vehicle you just need to open the vehicle and

start driving it. This vehicle is designed so light weight that it can be carried away by folding it

and is portable and not space restricting.

A vehicle is to be fabricated in the suitcase. Whole fabrication work is divided into sub

categories 1) Fabrication of chassis 2) Fabrication of steering 3) Fabrication of drive mechanism

1) Fabrication of chassis: - A chassis consists of an internal framework that supports a man-

made object in its construction and use. It is analogous to an animal's skeleton. An

example of a chassis is the under part of a motor vehicle, consisting of the frame (on

which the body is mounted).

The chassis along with frame holds all the important components of the vehicle. The

chassis design is of maximum importance in any automotive vehicle as it is the

responsible for holding all the components of vehicle together.

For our project the chassis is designed uniquely, as the chassis needs to be of different

type form the conventional available designs. The chassis is deigned in such a way that it

can be folded In between to make the vehicle portable. The chassis holds the steering

mechanism, the drive train and other electronic components. While designing the chassis

care should be taken to make sure that all the components fit properly on chassis even in

the folded state. The chassis is provided provision for folding in between so that it can be

carried away once folded. Also when the chassis is opened from the fold, the provision is
provided so that it can be locked to make it rigid. Unless this locking and folding

provision the suitcase wont function properly.

2) Fabrication of Steering mechanism: - As the name suggests the steering mechanism is

used for turning the vehicle . In our case the vehicle is three wheeled. Two wheels at the

drive and one wheel at the steering. This purpose of this design is to maintain the

portability of the vehicle,. As the vehicle is portable and can be folded and carried out,

components on the vehicle need to be choosen very wisely. The vehicle has got very

restricted space, as the design is compact and has been made keeping portability in mind.

The steering mechanism proposed for this project is simple handle based steering as it is

employed in autos. The reason behind this is, any other complex steering mechanism not

only increases the weight of the vehicle, thereby making it heavier to carry, but also

needs more space. As we are going to fabricate 3 wheeled vehicle there is no need to

think about any complex steering mechanisms. Handle is provided to front wheel which

will do work of steering. Care is taken to ensure the accuracy of steering.

3) Fabrication of drive mechanism.- The drive mechanism is nothing but the one which

actually drives the vehicle. As mentioned earlier while choosing the drive and

transmission proper care needs to be taken so that the drive is not only light weight but

also compact. Also care needs to be taken so that there are no effects of fuel leaks and

other disadvantages when the vehicle is folded. The reason being the vehicle needs to be

folded for portability. Even when folded the drive should be intact.
Keeping these things in mind, in our project we are going to implement the electric drive

rather than conventional I.C engine based drives. This not only makes the vehicle green

but also reduces the cost required to operate the vehicle.
