Introduction to QURAN:

THE Quran is the fundamental source of rituals, ethics, and laws of the Islamic religion. It is the book that
‘differentiates’ between right and wrong. Muslims take guidance from QURAN in every field of their lives.

Allah says in Sura An-Nahl, verse 89:

We have revealed to you the book which clarifies every matter
Nowadays, when the Muslim world is dealing with universal issues like combating terrorism and drugs, issues of
medical ethics, and feminism the guidance is taken from the Quran to deal these problems.

Muslim children start to learn portions of the Quran by heart in their normal schooling shows the respect of Muslims
and love for the Quran. The tradition of learning the entire Quran by heart started during the lifetime of the Prophet
and continues to the present day. A person attaining this distinction becomes known as a hafiz, and this is still a
prerequisite for admission to certain religious schools in Muslim countries.

An authentic hadith state:

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“It will be said to the one who memorised the Quran, ‘Recite and ascend and recite just as you
would recite in the world, for your abode (in Jannah) will be the last verse you recite”
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2914, Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 1464, Declared authentic –hasanun
sahih– by Imam Tirmidhi).

So, learning QURAN by heart also guarantees success in this world and also in the hereafter.

Muslims take guidance from the Quran from small issues of everyday life to bigger issues and follow its teachings
throughout their lives. Muslims swear on the Qurʾan for solemn oaths in the lawcourts and in everyday life.

All these show the importance and status of Quran in the lives of the Muslims.

So, what exactly is Quran and why is it so much important to Muslims?

This supreme status of Quran is because of the belief that the Qurʾan is the word of ALLAH, revealed to the Prophet
Muhammad via the Hazrat Gabriel, and is intended for all times and all places.

As it is said in Quran in surah Shuara:

And Indeed, the Quran is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.
the Qurʾan is the basis of Islamic law and theology. As the Quran itself states:
The celebrated fifteenth-century scholar and author Suyuti said, ‘Everything is based on the Qurʾan’. The entire
religious life of the Muslim world is built around the text of the Qurʾan,

The Quran contains….

Manzil

For the convenience of those who read the Quran in a week the text may be divided into seven portions,
each known as Manzil. So, Quran has seven Manzils.

Para

Para is a Persian word which means part/ piece. In Arabic the word Juz is used for it. Quran was divided
in 30 parts of equal length. So, Quran has 30 Paras

Surah

The Quran is composed of 114 chapters or surahs of unequal length.

 Madni surahs

Surahs That are revealed in Madina on Prophet (SAW) are called madina Surahs

There are 28 Madni surahs in Quran Madani Surahs generally consist of family and social laws,
injunctions of Jihad and exposition of limits and duties.

 Makki Surahs

Surahs that are revealed in Makah are called Makki surahs. There are 86 Makki surahs in Quran

The Makki Surahs generally consist of subjects pertaining to Tawheed, Prophethood, Day of
Judgement and words of comfort for the Prophet ‫ صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬by narrating incidents from the
past.

Ruku

Ruku is basically a mark put at the end of thematic shifts (as understood by those who have put these
marks). This is called ruku because usually the Muslims recite this much of the Qur'an in each Raka'at of
prayer (before going into to ruku).

There are a total 558 rukus in 114 Surahs of the Quran. The division of ruku in Quran is not the part of
the holy book at the time of revelation but introduced later to ease completion of Quran on the 27th
night of Ramadan

Verse (Ayah)

each sentence or phrase of the Quran is called an ayah, literally ‘a sign.’ These verses are not standard in
length or meter, and where each begins and ends was not decided by human beings, but dictated by
God.

The Quran starts with Surah FATIHA. It is taught to Muslims by ALLAH and is recited by Muslims in every
salah. The surah ends with the verses

Guide us to the straight path.

The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned [Your] anger or
of those who are astray.

It is a prayer asking ALLAH to Guide us to the straight path, the path of those upon whom HE has
bestowed favor.

And after these verses, the Quran states

Alif, Lam, Meem.

This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah

The favor that muslims ask in the ending of Surah Fatiha is given in the form of Quran by ALLAH. The
whole Quran is the favor of ALLAH, the path of those upon which ALLAH has bestowed and of those with
whom ALLAH became satisfied.

This very point tells about what is Quran and why is it so important in the lives of Muslims. there are
many verses describing the status of Quran, that it is healing, mercy, relief for mankind.

The Quran is the guidance for Muslims and for every human being, all classes of people living
in any place or time and for the whole life of man. Everybody, from the president to the man
in the street, finds the things that are about them in the Quran. They take the knowledge
and lessons that are necessary for peace and tranquility both in the world and the
hereafter.
And this is a Book which We have revealed as a blessing: so follow it and be
righteous, that ye may receive mercy."(al-Anam, 6/155).
The Arabic word, ‘Quran,’ literally means both ‘recitation’ and ‘reading’. Similarly, the Quran was both
recited orally and written down in book form. The true power of the Quran remains in the oral
recitation, as it is meant to be read aloud and melodiously. As Quran says in Surah Muzammil:

and recite the Quran with measured recitation.

So the Quran is meant to be recited melodiously and slowly. And it is also ordered to listen to Quran
carefully when its being recited. It states whats right and whats wrong. it guides anyone who is willing to
be guided. The Quran is the word of ALLAH

The Quran is mercy, guidance, and healing for muslims. the Quran is such that it verifies itself what it
says. it guides muslims in every way of life and contains scientific proves for anyone who is of the
knowing.

As according to the hadith:

Who is the author?

And Indeed, the Quran is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds. (surah shuara)
