Automatic Plant Watering System using Arduino UNO for University

Park Yin Yin Nu1, San San Lwin2, Win Win Maw3

Watering is the most important cultural practice and most labor intensive task in daily greenhouse
operation. Watering systems ease the burden of getting water to plants when they need it. Knowing
when and how much to water is two important aspects of watering process. To make the gardener
works easily, the automatic plant watering system is created. There have a various type using
automatic watering system that are by using sprinkler system, tube, nozzles and other. This system
uses Arduino UNO board, which consists of ATmega328 microcontroller. It is programmed in such a
way that it will sense the moisture level of the plants and supply the water if required. This type of
system is often used for general plant care, as part of caring for small and large gardens.
Normally, the plants need to be watered twice daily, morning and evening. So, the microcontroller has
to be coded to water the plants in the greenhouse about two times per day. However for most people
it becomes challenging to keep them healthy and alive. This system automation is designed to be
assistive for the University Park. This system hopes that through this prototype people will enjoy having
plants without the challenges related to absent or forgetfulness.

Smartphone based Automatic Irrigation system

M. VarshaP, A. Varsha, H. Shuba, Parneeth Charanthimath 2018

One of the most important factors for successful agricultural production is the irrigation system in place.
This paper propounds a design for automatic water supplying system in farmland using raspberry pi 3,
Arduino microcontrollers, relay boards and couple of sensors. System helps in water conservation by
automatically providing water to the plants depending on their water requirements. It can prove to be
efficient in agricultural fields, since pumping motor will be controlled from the remote place through the
android application. Soil moisture sensor is inserted into the soil to measure the moisture level. The
moisture level will be received by the raspberry board. After receiving the value, it is compared to the
predetermined threshold value. If the moisture level is greater then the threshold value the motor will
be turned ON, Off if it is lesser than the threshold value the motor can be turned OFF by the user. The
farmer can control the motor from the remote place depending on the moisture value. The system is
best suited for places where water is scares and has to be used in limited quantity.

The Development of an Automated Irrigation system using an open source microcontroller

Aslinds Hassan, W. Shah, N. harum, N. Bahaman, Fatemeh Mansourkiaie

This paper proposes an automated irrigation using Arduino microcontroller system which is cost
effective and can be used in a farm or average home garden. The proposed system is developed to
automatically water the plants when the soil moisture sensor has detected the soil is insufficient of
water by using the Arduino as the center core. The automated irrigation system is a fully functional
prototype which consists of a soil moisture sensor; an LCD display to show the moisture percentage and
pump status; a relay module which is used to control the on and off switch of the water pump; and a
water pump. When the soil moisture sensor senses the dry soil, it will show the moisture percentage on
the LCD display, and the relay module will switch on the water pump automatically to start the watering
process or vice versa. Hardware testing is conducted to ensure the proposed system is fully functional.

In daily operations related to farming or gardening Watering is the most important cultural practice and
the most labor-intensive task. No matter whichever weather it is, either too hot and dry or too cloudy
and wet, you want to be able to control the amount of water that reaches your plants. Modern watering
systems could be effectively used to water plants when they need it. But this manual process of
watering requires two important aspects to be considered: when and how much to water. In order to
replace manual activities and making gardener’s work easier, we have create automatic plant watering
system. By adding automated plant watering system to your garden or agricultural field, you will help all
of your plants reach their fullest potential as well as conserving water. Using sprinklers drip emitters, or
a combination of both, we can design a system that is ideal for every plant in our yard. For
implementation of automatic plant watering system, we have used combination of sprinkler systems,
pipes, and nozzles. This project uses the ATmega328 microcontroller. It is programmed to sense
moisture level of plants at particular instance of time, if the moisture content is less than specified
threshold which is predefined according to particular plant’s water need then desired amount of water
is supplied till it reaches threshold. Generally, plants need to be watered twice a day, morning and
evening. Thus, the microcontroller is programmed to water plants two times per day. System is designed
in such a way that it reports its current state as well as remind the user to add water to the tank. All this
notifications are made through mobile application. We hope that through this prototype we all can
enjoy having plants, without being worried about absent or forgetfulness.

This paper involves the development and formation of automatic irrigation system that uses sensor that
determines soil moisture (by soil moisture sensor), water level indicator also its pumping system that
aims to deliver the needed water based on the assigned soil moisture value. This paper also discusses
the prototype design of microcontroller based on water irrigation which detects a soil if watering is
required then the water will be maintained at the constant level. If the specific area is irrigated too
much with water, there are possibilities that the plant may die due to excessive irrigation. The proposed
system uses a microcontroller basically a platform device called ARDUINO where sensors are connected
in its internal and external ports. Whenever there is a variation in moisture content of the soil these
sensors will determine the change and will give an interrupt signal to the microcontroller and eventually
will send signal to the relay driver and thus the water pump is now activated. This irrigation system also
includes a water level indicator in the water tank which will indicate the water capacity of the reservoir
itself whether it is low level or high level. This thesis paper will allow garden owners and other
household areas or certain facilities in the efficient, convenient and effective method of water irrigation
and may direct future research on the development of more advanced water irrigation system.
