billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 13.3% from 2020 to 2027.

Biodegradable plastic is a plant-based plastic with no hazardous effects on the environment. It degrades
naturally in base compounds in a reasonable amount of time. Hence, plastic, defined as biodegradable, is
made of molecule that can break down naturally by the action of micro-organisms. Some of the major
known types of biodegradable plastic include, Polylactic Acid) (PLA), Polybutylene adipate terephthalate
(PBAT), Polybutylene Succinate (PBS), Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), and starch blends.

 Industry Category: The global biodegradable plastic market is segmented on the basis of type,
application, and region. Based on type, the market is classified into PolylacticAcid (PLA),
Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate (PBAT), Polybutylene Succinate (PBS),
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), starch blends, and others. On the basis of application, the global
biodegradable plastic market is categorized into packaging, agriculture, textile, consumer durable
and others. Based on region, it is studied across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and
LAMEA.

 Industry Characteristics: The global biodegradable plastic market is in the introductory

phase of the industry life cycle and is expected to explore new growth opportunities during the
coming years. Some of the basic factors driving the demand for the market include governmental
initiatives to eliminate single use plastic and strict regulatory outlook against the use of
conventional plastic products.

 Trends: Industry trends are shifting toward biobased products to reduce dependence on
conventional plastics. Moreover, most of the manufacturers in industries such as packaging,
textile and agriculture are shifting toward biobased plastic due to stringent regulations from the
government. Such factors are largely impacting the biodegradable plastic market growth.

IDEA GENERATION
Q. What sources of information did you use to generate ideas?

ANS. Increasing level of air and water pollution, Government incentives towards ways of saving
environment, Increase in level of eco-friendly products.

When scientists invented plastic, it was praised for being exceptionally durable—not breaking
down naturally like organic matter. However, by the 1960s, researchers began to worry that
plastic’s durable nature was a major problem contributing to landfills and ocean pollution. By
the 1980s, scientists offered a new solution to plastic pollution: biodegradable plastic.

What Is Biodegradable Plastic?

Biodegradable plastic (or biodegradable polymer) is a synthetic compound that can decompose
over time through living organisms, eventually breaking down into water, carbon dioxide, and
leftover material called biomass. Biodegradable plastic’s ability to naturally degrade within an
organic time frame makes it unique from other plastics, which can take hundreds or thousands of
years to break down. There are several recognized types of biodegradable plastics, including
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), Polylactic acid (PLAs), plant starch blends (like corn starch), and
cellulose-based plastics.

What’s the Difference Between Biodegradable, Bioplastic, and Compostable Plastic

There are a few notable differences between biodegradable plastic, bioplastic, and compostable
plastic:

 Biodegradable plastic refers to any plastic that can degrade naturally through living
organisms, regardless of the original material from which it derives. Plastic can be
biodegradable without being a bioplastic or being considered “compostable plastic.”

 Bioplastic is a term that describes any plastic made from renewable raw natural materials.
While some bioplastics are biodegradable or compostable, many of them are not, meaning
they won’t break down even though they’re made of natural materials.

4
NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

 Compostable plastic is a term that describes plastics that need specific conditions to break
down, rather than the less complex conditions of biodegradable plastics. While
biodegradable plastics can break down in a more natural environment, compostable plastics
usually require industrial composting facilities.

How Long Does It Take for Biodegradable Plastic to Decompose?

In general, biodegradable plastics take between three and six months to decompose when left
exposed to oxygen or light. Regular plastics can take up to 1,000 years to reach the same levels of
decomposition.

What Are the Benefits of Biodegradable Plastic?

Biodegradable plastic’s ability to break down within a year means it has several advantages over
traditional plastics:

 It decreases the waste sent to landfills or incinerators. When you toss traditional plastic into
the trash, it has a negative environmental impact because it can wind up in landfills, where it
can potentially sit for hundreds of years, or incinerators, where it will be burned and release
harmful chemicals into the natural environment. Conversely, biodegradable plastic has an
environmental benefit: it will break down in a landfill and doesn’t need to be burned.
 It takes less energy to manufacture. The manufacture of biodegradable plastics often takes
less energy than traditional plastics, meaning that it takes fewer fossil fuels and produces
fewer greenhouse gas emissions that harm the planet.
 It releases fewer harmful substances when breaking down. While traditional plastics can
leach toxic chemicals into the environment as they sit, well-made biodegradable plastics
should break down with few harmful byproducts. Instead, biodegradable plastics release a
combination of water, carbon dioxide, and biomass (which is often simply leftover plant
materials).

5
NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

What Are the Concerns Related to Biodegradable Plastic?

While biodegradable may aid in the environment conflict against traditional plastics, it does have
some drawbacks:

 It may not break down completely. While scientists have yet to determine the effects of
biodegradable plastic, there is evidence that certain types do not break down completely.
When biodegradable plastics only partially break down, it can be even more harmful to the
environment than if it had stayed whole since the smaller pieces (called microplastics)
become harder to clean up or identify.
 It can release harmful substances when breaking down. While biodegradable plastic
releases fewer harmful chemicals when breaking down, that doesn’t mean it’s harm-free—
certain types of biodegradable plastics can release harmful substances like metals and
methane.
 It reinforces a single-use mindset. Biodegradable plastic reinforces the idea of single-use
materials, encouraging excess waste production as a sustainable practice. This mindset can
have negative consequences because consumers may turn to biodegradable plastics as the
best solution for environmental issues, passing up more environmentally friendly practices
such as low-waste living, recycling, prioritizing organic materials, and composting food
waste.
 It’s expensive to produce. Biodegradable plastic is more expensive to produce than
traditional plastic, making it challenging to encourage plastic manufacturers (without
incentives) to switch to biodegradable plastic for their products and packaging.

Uses for Biodegradable Plastics

While biodegradable plastics can, in theory, replace almost every use for conventional plastics, its
higher cost prevents many manufacturers from making the switch. However, you still encounter
biodegradable plastics daily—look for a label that describes the plastic as biodegradable.
Biodegradable plastics are most commonly used to make things like:

1. Food packaging: Manufacturers can make biodegradable food packaging out of a range of
items, from cheese byproducts to almond shells. Common biodegradable plastic products
include takeout containers, carry-out bags, and coffee cups.
2. Disposable tableware: Biodegradable plastic plates, cups, and utensils are easy to find on
the market—some have the texture of paper or cardboard while others feel smoother like
traditional plastic.
3. Plastic bags: There are many biodegradable plastic bags in circulation, including shopping
bags, produce bags, and other single-use bags.

6
NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

4. Packing peanuts: While traditional packaging peanuts were made from non-biodegradable
polystyrene, there are now many starch-based packaging peanuts available that are
biodegradable.
5. Plant pots: Many companies now package their plants in biodegradable containers,
meaning the packaging can be planted straight into the ground and will decompose naturally
in the soil.
6. Medical products: Many medical materials like surgical sutures and wound dressings are
made from biodegradable material, so they naturally break down without needing an
invasive technique to remove the material after the patient has healed.

NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

Biodegradable plastics can be divided into three groups according to their origin:

a. Biodegradable but not bio-based – often made with synthetic polyesters

b. Biodegradable and bio-based – made with starch or cellulose-based materials

c. Biobased but non-biodegradable – from biobased oils

11
NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

In a nutshell, most biodegradable plastics are made from traditional petrochemicals but designed to

break down faster.

They include additives that make them degrade rapidly in the presence of light, oxygen, moisture, and
heat. Plus, the biodegradable plastics decay faster because of the naturally occurring microorganisms
such as bacteria, fungi, and algae.

Marketed: The more marketers know about their customers, the more they will be able to optimize
spending and improve the user experience. By using this experience, we will be targeting the
customers need by focusing on their timings of a certain product on what is the best for the
consumer. Successful marketers understand that a positive customer experience typically leads to
more sales and referrals. In today’s data-driven world, customers are now more aware that brands
can collect their information through loyalty cards, social media activity, and company apps, to name
a few. They understand that when a brand recognizes who their customers are, and what motivates
them, they do a better job meeting customer need.

A marketer who wishes to be effective in today’s competitive market must be able to look at the data,
understand it, analyze it and then interpret it to create a smart marketing strategy.

Development: Prepare a Prototype and determine the

following elements:

Q. What kinds of materials are to be used in manufacturing?

Biodegradable plastic – Manufacturing process

The most familiar bioplastics are made from natural materials such as corn starch. So, let’s see how
the manufacturing process of plastic from starch looks like.

Production of biodegradable plastic from starch

STEP 1: Preparation
Cassava tubers are peeled and washed with water. Then, the tubes are mechanically grated.
STEP 2: Filtering
The grated cassava is mixed with water (3 times the volume of the grated material). The mixture is
strained and filtered using a coarse sieve and filter cloth.
 STEP 3: Settling
Then, the filtrate is left to settle for six hours. The leftover parts of the starch are remixed with water
and left to settle for twelve hours. This is called starch washing.
STEP 4: Oven-drying
The starch (wet) is dewatered manually and then oven dried.
It is dried at a temperature of 105ºC for 4 hours, to make sure the starch is in its barest minimum
moisture content.
STEP 5: Film preparation
The cassava starch is tested for moisture content using an infra-red moisture meter.

13
NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

STEP 6: Biodegradable film mixture

A mixture of 1kg powdered cassava starch, 2kg polyvinyl alcohol liquid, 100g talc powder, and 100g
urea is prepared. The resulting mixture is added to 400ml of glycerin.
STEP 7: Producing the biodegradable film
The whole mixture is stirred to produce a semi-dry powder. Thereafter, the mixture is pressed out with
a Blownfilm extruder to produce a biodegradable film, which can either be used directly or modified
further for use.

Q. What type of packaging will your product need? What function will
the package serve?

Paperboard cartons.

Paperboard is a paper-based material that is lightweight, yet strong. It can be easily cut and
manipulated to create custom shapes and structures. These characteristics make it ideal to be used
in personalized packaging. It is made by turning fibrous materials that come from wood or from
recycled wastepaper into pulp, and then bleaching it. Paperboard packaging comes in various
grades, each suitable for different packaging requirements.

Functions of the package serving:

 Physical Protection – from shock, vibration, compression, temperature, etc. of the objects
enclosed in the package.
 Barrier Protection – protecting as a barrier from oxygen, water vapor, dust, etc.
 Reducing theft - Packaging that cannot be re-closed or gets physically damaged with
signs of opening aids in the prevention of theft.
 Convenience –includes features which add convenience in distribution, handling,
display, sale, opening, re-closing, use, and re-use.
 Marketing - The packaging and labels can be used by marketers to encourage potential
buyers to purchase the product.

Q. Include a features and benefit chart of the product??

Advantages of using biodegradable plastics:

1. Reduction in Carbon Emission:

The formation of traditional plastic involves use of carbon in an excessive amount. This carbon
is released into the atmosphere when the used plastic begins to decompose or melt. There are
positives that methane & other pollutants could also be released when traditional plastic is
recycled or burned.
In contrary to which, biodegradable plastics do not release carbon or methane as no carbon is
used in its manufacturing process. Biodegradable plastics are broken down by naturally
occurring bacteria & since these plastics are plant-based, minimal amount of carbon is
released during the composting process.

2. Lesser Energy Consumption:

Though the initial investment in the biodegradable plastics might be slightly higher, in the long
run biodegradable plastics involve lesser amount of energy in its manufacturing process & do
not need fossil fuels to be recycled. Thus, it contributes in conserving petroleum supplies.
Conversely, traditional plastic comes from heating and treating oil molecules until they turn into
polymers & demands more energy in its production & burning of fossil fuel.

3. Environmentally friendly Disposable Solution:

The traditional plastics are thrown on the scrapheap at landfills. As a consequence, the land
that could have been used for agriculture, residence or industrial applications is converted into
landfills by non-biodegradable plastic.
The usage of biodegradable plastic products will reduce the number of landfills as these
products undergo biodegradation when buried or given to composting. The micro-organisms in
soil will breakdown the plastic pieces into compost, humus other useful compounds. However,
these bacteria will turn up their nose at traditional plastic. Yes, you can try loading their dinner
plates with plastic bottles or bags, & you shall see the entire meal being skipped by these
unicellular gluttons.

4. Recyclable Material:
Biodegradable plastics not only take significantly lesser time to breakdown but can also be
recycled to manufacture more plastic by-products. The products produced are non-toxic as
they don’t contain chemicals or toxics if compared to traditional plastic.
Use of ground-breaking technology in recycling the bioplastic has closed the loop by creating
the materials that lessen our reliance on traditional plastics. The recycled materials are
compatible with standard plastic manufacturing equipment, thus making a way for rapid market
adoption.

the price of the product does not significantly impact the demand for that product. When demand for a
good or service is static when its price or other factor changes, it is said to be inelastic. So, when the
price goes up, consumers will not change their buying habits. So, our product will be having inelastic
demand as the consumer will not change their buying habits for our product.
