McDonald’s Taken to Court

In 2002, several obese teenagers in the USA sued claiming that the company was responsible for
making them fat. A. _____ They claimed that the company had not warned them about the health
problems that can result from eating too much salty, high-fat food and drinking too many sugary
drinks: diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. The mother of one of the children, who at the age
of 15 weighed more than 180 kg, said in her statement: ‘I always believed McDonald’s was healthy
for my son.’

McDonald’s rejected the claim that they were responsible for these teenagers’ health problems.

long, long time’ he added. The judge agreed, and dismissed the case, saying: ‘it is not the place of
the law to protect people against their own excesses.’

industry. There is some scientific evidence to suggest that fast food is addictive, and harmful, too.
So, is selling fast food the same, in a way, as drug-dealing?

Write one composition using 120 to 160 words. Choose either option A or option B and circle the
letter corresponding to your choice.

A- Last week you decided to buy a mobile phone in an online mall. You paid by credit card and
received the phone the following day. When you tried to switch it on, it didn’t fully charge the
Welcome Screen. You contacted the shop which sold you the phone twice but they do not want
to change it. Write a LETTER OF COMPLAINT to them, explaining when you bought it, why
you decided to buy it online, the problem your phone has, the bad service you were given and
what you will do if the problem is not solved.

B- Write a STORY. Begin like this: ‘It was 10 o’clock on a cold winter’s night and Sharon was
driving home.’
