Management Functions 3

Abstract
This report is particularly dedicated to implementing the management functions in the context
of organizing an event in the organization as done by Ruslan Agarunovich (2015) to practically
apply the learned knowledge in class. This report will help to get an insight of how a manager
varies and adopts different roles as per the situation demands.

Introduction
A dynamic social process to regulate business operations, plan effectively as well as
economically to accomplish the goals and objectives of a business is termed as Management. It
is consisted of various aspects and activities which vary from the operative functions like
procurement, marketing, IT, Finance etc. Instead, these are common for all the managers alike
disregarding his status and level. (Juneja, 2020)

A manager is one of the most crucial staff members in an organization. It is a manager who
shapes and forms the culture at the workplace in the teams and subordinates in numerous
ways. He plays both an administrative and a leadership role and these roles demand a diverse
skillset to accomplish the tasks and meet the objectives. (Reh, 2020)

Various scholars have identified several functions of management in their research, but George
& Jerry describe four functions of management which are to plan, organize, actuate along with
control. But Henry Fayol mentions planning, organizing, commanding, and controlling.
However, the widely used functions for the mentioned situation in a hypothetical organization
have been subsequently discussed here. The event chosen is the promotion of a new product.

Planning

It is creating a plan to achieve a milestone and set goals in a given deadline, allocating
resources, and assigning responsibilities (Nekhaychuk, Nogas, Nekhaychuk, and Dzhelilov,
2019).

So, in the very first phase of planning, the manager will be attempting to understand the new
product that is to be launched and its features. The manager will grasp the idea about the

requirements and goals of the promotional campaign and who will be the target customers that
are to be approached. Further, the manager will look into the cashflows needed and available.
The manager will also be acquiring the information needed to take further decisions like the
venue of the event, and planning the activities like forming a team, making them understand
the new product and its features and setting deadlines etc.

Organizing

It is to bring all the resources together to develop a prolific association to achieve the
organizational goals. (Keegan, Bitterling, Sylva, and Hoeksema, 2018)

Here, the manager will be synergizing the team who will be handling the event and relevant
activities. He will then delegate them their tasks along with an anticipated deadline to
accomplish that very milestone in the given time. He will also be acquiring the resources
needed like technical specialization to operate the product. The manager will approach the
target audience through a medium, for instance, social media, with the help of his team to grab
their attention towards the event and inviting them. He will further recognize the challenges
such as unavailability of the venue required on the mentioned date, conflicts in the team or any
other issue at hand.

Staffing

It is fulfilling the manpower needs by appropriate recruitment and selection, and then training,
and developing the new employees. (Liu, 2018)

During this phase of management, the manager will be acquiring the required manpower such
as the part-time or temporary staff members needed for advertising and promotion of the
product, workforce required for handling the decoration of the event, the staff needed for
handling the dining needs of the people who will be attending the event etc. The manager will
then advise them about the requirements and standards of the organization to make this event
of promoting the new product a success for the organization. The manager will also check the

availability of the IT staff at time of event so that Indians of any technical issues that happen at
the time of the event can be dealt with immediately.

Controlling

It is to make sure that rest of the functions are working properly and are aligned towards the
success of the company. It is where a manager ensures the performance of the employees, the
quality of work done and monitors the reliability and efficiency of various projects. (Francsovics,
Kemendi, and Piukovics, 2019)

In this stage, the manager will be establishing the standard performance and monitoring the
team dedicated to arranging the event whether they are performing up to the set standards or
if there is any discrepancy in the required activities, he will be guiding them to alter the ways of
doing it such as suggesting them about the color scheme to be in the alignment of new product
if they have not chosen the same color scheme or letting them know about maintaining the
budget while finalizing the catering and refreshment of the attendees of the event.

The Concluding remarks

This is how the same manager switches to different roles in an organization as per the demand
of the situation. With the example of this event, I can draw just conclusion that every manager
has to go to several roles and these roles are identical for every manager, but the intensity and
diversity of their function depends on the nature of the organization they work in, the nature of
the task they are given, the nature of the situation they are dealing with and so on although we
see that the managers are often tasked with their specific duties in different departments of an
organization on the basis of their particular qualification, experience, expertise, competencies,
and the needs of the organization. But they all face a more complex and broader array of the
responsibilities which is beyond their specialized knowledge. The managers are required to
navigate their roles and abilities as per the structural, procedural, interpersonal or any other
challenges in the progression of accomplishing the goals of the organization.
