Developing Your Portfolio for College Credit Syllabus

Course Description
Developing Your Portfolio for College Credit is a self-paced course that guides students step-by-step through the
preparation and compilation of components required for prior learning assessment portfolio evaluation
through LearningCounts.org. After completing the course and their portfolio, students submit their portfolio
for assessment by CAEL-trained faculty assessors with the appropriate subject matter expertise (additional

Course Structure and Module Names


This is a self-paced, interactive online workshop course that students can take at any time and from any
computer or tablet with an Internet connection. Materials for the course are organized in 8 modules. It is
recommended that students complete the modules in order.

1. Introduction to Prior Learning Assessment 5. Matching What You Know to Learning Outcomes
2. The LearningCounts Portfolio 6. Writing the Learning Narrative
3. Identifying Types of Learning 7. Gather Supporting Documentation
4. Identifying College Level Learning Outside the Classroom 8. Building and Submitting Your Portfolio

Course Schedule
Students can register for this course at any time. Students have up to 6 months from the date of registration
to complete the 8 modules and submit their portfolio for assessment. During the 6 month period, students
can access the modules as many times as needed. No credit is granted for this course, and there are no
graded assignments. Each module features a 5 question quiz at the end to review module topics.

Students may be able to complete the self-paced course relatively quickly (in 4-6 hours), however, additional
time will be required to find courses that match student knowledge areas and develop materials for the
learning portfolio (including one 8-10 page paper per course request).

Course Materials and Cost


The cost of Developing Your Portfolio for College Credit is $149. There is no text book for the course. All reading
materials are embedded in the course. Students can order an optional textbook for more information about

Course Objectives
As a result of this course, learners will be able to:
 Identify and reflect on areas of their own learning from both formal and informal settings
 Use critical reflection skills to rethink the value of learning from their experiences
 Generate college-level writing that demonstrates learning in a format that addresses course learning
outcomes/objectives
 Identify, organize, and gather documentation to build prior learning portfolios

Portfolio Building and Submission


Upon registration, students have access to an online tool to begin building their portfolio. When students have
completed their portfolio, they will submit it to LearningCounts for a fee of $125 per portfolio.
