Chapter 2

Introduction to
Communication
Communication

has been defined as the act of giving,

receiving or exchanging information,
ideas and opinions so that the
‘message’ is completely understood
by both parties.

A process by which we assign and

convey meaning in an attempt to
create shared understanding.
 It is therefore a social
interaction where at
least two interacting
agents share a common
set of signs and a
common set of semiotic
rules.

Journalism
A term that is often confused
nowadays with mass communication is
journalism. Of the two, journalism is the
older term and the older profession,
but with a narrower scope.

Traditionally, journalists perform two

functions: to report the news and
comment on it.
Journalism Versus Writing
• In the Philippines, there is a term
which is often confused with
journalism – creative writing.
• Journalism, however, as shown
earlier, is only partly writing. Not all
writing is journalism. Neither is all
journalism writing.
Press and Others
• A term used often as a synonym for journalists is
press. In the early days, before the electronic
media came, the press referred to the newspaper
and magazine journalists.
