Business Communication and Ethics

Kali Aruzhan
Peter Oiler and Winn-Dixie Stores

1. I think that yes, they did a wrong decision by firing him. However I also understand that
it wasn’t this easy as today to understand and accept this kind of differences. It is sad
how many people as Peter suffered before any laws or defence programs were adopted in
society. This action by Winn-Dixie is an example of absolute unethics and inequality. It
is a pity that some really successful people in their activities had to, and even now, in the
advanced world, have to suffer from sidelong glances / dismissals / threats / cuts in
wages. Yes, then it could be savagery and something abnormal, and it all depends on the
society and how free it is. Companies must, of course, maintain their brand and
reputation, but at the same time without offending or belittling anyone.

Peter`s private life actually was no one business. And he never brought his private life to
work. His preferences and interests never disturbed the working process or his working
activity. This punishment against him was too much. Peter didn’t abuse or committed
crime against anyone. Also he was above-average worker and was working there for half
of his life. Peter was picked out and hounded by the firm because he was different from
the purportedly norm, and he was asked to quit for several months before being sacked.
This is why policies such as Affirmative Action are still in effect today. President
Johnson issued an executive order in 1961, but President Lyndon B. Johnson did not sign
it into law until 1964. Companies have the freedom to dismiss anybody they choose, but
what is the rationale for the termination of an employee? If it can be proven that
prejudice was a factor in the firing, then the firing is illegal.

2. Today we already know that such laws exist and protect the interests of all individuals of
various ranks. And they have a place to be. These laws should protect the honor and
dignity of those who live their personal lives while not violating any laws
(administrative, legal) and live their own lives. Certainly, the adoption of such laws
depends on the location of the incident. The more conservative regions have not yet come
to them, the freer and more progressive regions, on the contrary, already have such laws.
I believe that any opinion / vision has a place to be in society, as long as it is carried out
smoothly and without excesses, excesses, like everywhere else, are bad. We should not
agitate and advertise the LGBTQ community, but we should be able to accept their
position and not encroach on their right to live.
