 Pangasinenses - eighth largest Filipino ethnolinguistic
 Igorots - the collective name of several Austronesian ethnic groups
from the cordillera.
 Tingguians - who live in the secluded mountains of Ilocos Sur.

Ilocanos are known to be hardworking and frugal, hardy in the face of

adversity. Respect and humility in everyday dealings mark the Ilocano
personality; they live simply, concentrating on work and productivity.
Local artisans like fabric weavers and potters are famous for their
skilled craftwork.

The cultures and traditions that are reflected in these sayings are: not
forgetting where he/she came from; being responsible; being
industrious; more prudent towards other people; being helpful and
unselfish; being thrifty; being honest; being respectful; and being
hardworking.

PANGASINENSE

The Pangasinan people (Pangasinan: Totoon Pangasinan), also

known as Pangasinense, are an ethnolinguistic group native to the
Philippines. Numbering 1,823,865 in 2010, they are the tenth largest
ethnolinguistic group in the country. They live mainly in their native

subgroup of the Philippine languages, which belong to the Austronesian
(Malayo-Polynesian) family.

ILOCANOS

The Ilocanos are known for being hardworking, appreciative,

simple and determined. However, they are also known as stingy

cheap is just treated as a joke or pun among Filipinos and not as
a negative regional stereotype. It is a regional characteristic that
their Filipino brethren have grown to understand.

The Tinguians "the people of the mountains" originally referred to all
mountain dwelling people. Nowadays, it particularly refers to a cultural
minority group living in the mountains of Abra and named Itneg.
The Tinguian culture dates back to pre-Spanish times but in spite of
strong external forces negatively affecting their customs, they continue
to practice their ethnic traditions.
In 1959, at the Tinguian village in Abra, tribal elder Norma Mina Agaid
embroidered on abel fabric the story of their folk myths - including
Pinaing, the goddess of weaving who introduced through dreams the
weaving patterns called the pinilian as well as binakol, and the
embroidery style called kinamay to the Tinguian women - preserving the
Tinguian culture and traditions.

THE FOUNDER OF ILOCOS NORTE

Emilio Aguinaldo. Unperturbed, he established the Iglesia Filipina
Independiente. In an effort to gain political control and because of the
increasing population of the region, a Royal Decree was signed on
February 2, 1818, splitting Ilocos into two provinces: Ilocos Norte and
Ilocos Sur.

Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy QSC CCLH PMM KGCR was a Filipino

revolutionary, statesman, and military leader who is officially
recognized as the first and the youngest president of the Philippines and
the first president of a constitutional republic in Asia.

Emilio Aguinaldo led a revolutionary movement against the Spanish

colonial government in the Philippines. He cooperated with the U.S.
during the Spanish-American War but subsequently broke with the U.S.
and led a guerrilla campaign against U.S. authorities during the
Philippine-American War.
THE FOUNDER OF ILOCOS SUR
 Conquistador Juan de Salcedo Ilocos Sur was founded by the
Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo in 1572. It was formed
when the north (now Ilocos Norte) split from the south (Ilocos
Sur). At that time, it included parts of Abra and the upper half of
present-day La Unión.

 Juan de Salcedo was a Spanish-Mexican conquistador. He was

born in Mexico in 1549 and he was the grandson of Miguel López
de Legazpi and brother of Felipe de Salcedo. Salcedo was one of
the soldiers who accompanied the Spanish colonization of the
Philippines in 1565.

THE FOUNDER OF LA UNION

 Governor General Antonio Maria Blanco. On March 2, 1850,
Governor General Antonio Maria Blanco signed the Superior
Decreto that founded La Union – the 34th province since the
founding of Cebu in 1565.

 Blanco was the son of Antonio Gaspar Blanco Herrejón y Crehuet

and María de la Paz Castañola y Gil Taboada.

 He joined the Army as a minor cadet on 30 April 1806, at the age

of three. He was promoted as sub-lieutenant on 10 April 1814.
Since then, he participated in campaigns, including those during
the French invasion of Spain in 1823, and the First Carlist War
(1833 – 1840). He was promoted to various ranks, the highest
being the rank of mariscal de campo on 24 December 1843.He was
then stationed in the Philippines, becoming a segundo cabo
(commander of the army) before he was appointed as Governor-
General.

 He became Governor-General on 26 December 1849, replacing

Narciso Clavería. During his term, the monthly lottery was
established on 29 January 1850. It was also during his term that the
province of La Union was established. The province was officially
established on 2 March 1850, and its establishment was confirmed
by Queen Isabela II through a royal decree issued on 18 April
1854. La Union was originally part of Ilocos Sur, which was
formed after Ilocos was divided into two provinces in 1818.

 He left his position on 29 June 1850 and was succeeded by Juan

Antonio de Urbiztondo. He then became the civil governor of
Valencia in 1853, captain general of Valencia in 1854, and captain
general of Navarra from November 1858 to 1860.
THE FOUNDER OF PANGASINAN
 Pangasinan was among the earliest political and administrative
units in the Philippines. It was officially conquered and colonized
by D. Martin de Goiti in 1571.

 Martín de Goiti (c. 1534 – 1575) was one of the soldiers who
accompanied the Spanish colonization of the East Indies and the
Pacific in 1565.

 In 1574, De Goiti fought in the war during the invasion of about

3,000 Chinese sea pirates who had sailed from the South China
sea. Their leader, Limahong, besieged on the Spanish settlements
in Manila. De Goiti was killed by these pirates. Most of the
Spanish reinforcements came from Vigan and Cebu. Martín de
Goiti's second in command, Juan de Salcedo left Ilocos Sur, after
hearing the news and traveled to Manila where he discovered their
settlements had been ceded to the pirates. Salcedo's forces attacked
and drove the pirates out of Manila. Limahong and his fleets
retreated to Pangasinan where they re-organize their forces.

 In 1575, Salcedo's army marched north to Pangasinan, in pursuit of

the pirates, and besieged them for three months.

 The Spanish colonization paved the way for the establishment of

Manila as a permanent settlement and capital city of the Spanish
East Indies. He later explored Pampanga, Pangasinan and founded
several Spanish cities in Luzon between the periods of 1571 -1573.
De Goiti, along with other soldiers were granted with haciendas (estates) for the lands they
had conquered, by Philip II of Spain.
