minority group living in the mountains of Abra and named Itneg.
The Tinguian culture dates back to pre-Spanish times but in spite of
strong external forces negatively affecting their customs, they continue
to practice their ethnic traditions.
In 1959, at the Tinguian village in Abra, tribal elder Norma Mina Agaid
embroidered on abel fabric the story of their folk myths - including
Pinaing, the goddess of weaving who introduced through dreams the
weaving patterns called the pinilian as well as binakol, and the
embroidery style called kinamay to the Tinguian women - preserving the
Tinguian culture and traditions.

FESTIVALS (FIESTA)
This is the list of Festivals of Ilocos Norte:
Bac-bacarra Festival
(Fish Baskets) - This
celebration was started
in the year 2005 as a
revival and preservation
of their cultural
heritage. The legendary
bac-bacarra is a
freshwater fish
abundant in the rivers
of the town in the olden days. It is now extinct. The town’s name
was derived from it. It was coined by a Spanish soldier who passed
by. He asked the name of the place from a local who at that time
was fishing. He did not understand his question and just answered
bac-bacarra.
Paoay- Guling-guling
Festival a traditional
festival, implemented by
Spanish monks at the
beginning of the 16th
century. It is celebrated
in Paoay, Ilocos Norte
the Tuesday before the
Ash Wednesday—the
last day for
merrymaking before the
start of the Lenten season. The celebration starts with a ritual
called “Guling.” This word can be translated as “mark” or “sign.”
In the old days, the mayor of the town smeared people’s foreheads
with a white cross made of wet rice flour.
Laoag City-
Pamulinawen Festival
came from the name of a
woman made popular in
the popular Ilocano folk
song Pamulinawen. The
festival is celebrated in
the city of Laoag, Ilocos
Norte to promote
camaraderie and
sportsmanship. The
festivity was initially to honor the city's patron, Saint William the
Hermit. It held as a reminder of how Christianity gives color to the
lives of the Laoageños. This is along with their unwavering faith
that everything will get better, even on the darkest days.
Pinili- Bawang Festival

the. hardworking farmers
in the community who

(bawang), known as the

Marcos- Pinakbet
Festival Taking pride of
this town’s favorite
Ilocano dish, locally
known as pinakbet, a mix
of indigenous vegetables steamed in fish sauce, residents here
ushered the opening of the third Pinakbet festival. “Pinakbet” came
from the contracted Ilokano word ‘pinakebbet’ which means
“shrunk” or “shriveled.”As a way of thanksgiving, the Pinakbet
festival is a repository of the town’s “ani” [harvest] festival being
celebrated every month of March but this was later moved to
December to accommodate more balikbayans wanting to join the
festivity.

that can be cooked as adobo or sinigang and an ingredient for pizza
and pinakbet cuisines.
Pagudpod-
Kangayedan Festival
with fishing, farming and
the ever-growing tourism
industry – the town’s
primary sources of
livelihood, the
Kangayedan Festival is a
revelation of
thanksgiving to God’s
marvelous gifts only found in this so-called Paradise of the North.
Kangayedan comes in the form of stylized dance movements
featuring a couple showing reverence to God for a great
agricultural harvest, abundant catch of marine products and
amazingly beautiful and protected natural resources.
