1. Description

1.1 The SOLAS Style reversible inflatable product is a high capacity liferaft, rated
for 50 or 100 persons (Figure 101).

1.2 The 100 person liferaft is made from two 50 person liferafts which are
connected together by a quick-release attachment. The liferafts are packed
together in a glass-reinforced plastic container. One liferaft is the Master Raft
and the other is the Slave Raft.

1.3 The liferaft is made from the parts that follow:

1.3.1 Two buoyancy tubes: one installed on top of the other with a floor
suspended between them. This gives a high freeboard.
1.3.2 A canopy, which is operated automatically by an inflated centre strut.
The centre strut is made from four separate tubes which are connected
in pairs. Each pair of inter-connected strut tubes are inflated by the
upper or lower buoyancy tube. The buoyancy of the centre strut pushes
it up through an aperture in the centre of the floor to support the canopy.
1.3.3 Water pockets, which are installed in the canopy, make the liferaft stable
and control the drift subsequent to the launch.
1.3.4 The liferaft is made from polyurethane-proofed Nylon fabric. The colour
of the inflated parts of the liferaft is black and the canopy is flame red.

1.4 The liferaft has the internal and external equipment that follows:

1.4.1 A rescue line and quoit and lifelines which are attached around the
edge of the buoyancy tubes.
1.4.2 Internal and external lamps.
1.4.3 A drogue (sea anchor).
1.4.4 Survival equipment, which is contained in emergency packs, are
attached to a bridle adjacent to the liferaft entrance. The survival packs
can be easily located, on the bridle, when any side of the liferaft is up.

1.4.5 Illustrations are given (where possible) on the liferaft to show the
operation of the equipment. Written words are in English
(as standard) and are also given in other languages as specified by the
customer.
1.4.6 The liferaft is kept in a container which is made from glass-reinforced
plastic. This protects the liferaft when it is stowed on the ship. The
containers are identified Type A and Type B (this shows that painter and
bowsing line attachment positions are opposite).

1.5 The liferafts must be stowed on launching racks on the sides of the ship. The
racks must be installed in a position so that the containers will fall from the
racks directly into the sea, when they are released.

1.6 The liferaft is inflated, at high pressure, by a carbon dioxide/nitrogen mix

through an inflation system which is not fully automatic. The gas is kept in two
cylinders in a pocket on the side of the liferaft hull. Each cylinder is fitted with a
valve and an operating head.

3. Installation notes

3.1 The installation notes for the Surviva Reversible Liferaft are given as a general
guide. When more detailed instructions are necessary, refer to Survitec Group
Customer Services Department.

3.1.1 Stowage positions

(a) Stow the liferafts in a position which will make sure they will be
serviceable when they are necessary. Make sure they can be
easily launched (manually) or can float-free from a sinking ship,
(refer to 3.1.10).
NOTE: The liferafts must be stowed away from the propellers,
side thrust apertures and stabilisers. The stow position
must not prevent the operation of a survival craft or rescue
boat at any other launching station.

3.1.2 Protection of stowed liferafts

(a) Stow the liferafts in a position which will give the maximum
possible protection from fire, smoke, vibration, funnel deposits,
sparks, oil, heat, explosion, flooding and weather.
(b) In conditions when ice is present, stow the liferafts in protected
positions (adjacent to casings) so that they will not be frozen over.
(c) Do not stow the liferafts in a positions where they can be in a pool
of water.
(d) Do not let the liferafts touch any material that has copper or
copper compounds.
(e) When using a power hose to wash the ship’s deck and liferaft
installation, do not point the hose directly at the liferaft container.
3.1.3 Stowage of liferafts adjacent to ship’s compasses.
(a) Stow the liferafts away from the ship’s compass as far as possible.
This is very important on small ships. Ferrous metal in the
liferaft or its stowage can have an unwanted effect on the ship’s
compass.
NOTE: In these conditions, liferafts and their stowage should be
considered to be fixed magnetic material.
3.1.4 Secure the painters
WARNING: IF THE END OF THE PAINTER LINE IS NOT ATTACHED TO
A STRONG POINT ON THE SHIP, THE LIFERAFT WILL NOT
INFLATE AUTOMATICALLY, AND IT WILL NOT REMAIN ATTACHED
TO THE SHIP. THIS COULD CAUSE LOSS OF LIFE.
(a) The end of the painter on every liferaft should be secured to a
suitable strong point, so that on being launched the liferaft is held
to the vessel.
(b) The securing arrangement for the painter will normally include a
float free arrangement such as a hydrostatic release unit, (HRU).
Where a HRU is fitted, the painter line should be attached only to
the HRU weak link.

SURVIVA
SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

(c) If the liferaft is moved from one location to another, make sure the
painter line is re-attached to a strong point on the ship.
(d) Special arrangements may be necessary as given in the marine
escape system.
3.1.5 Height of stowage above the waterline
(a) Stow the liferaft as near to the waterline as possible and make
sure it is kept in safety.
NOTE: The painter line of the liferaft is usually 10 metres more
than the height of the installation.
(b) Make sure the liferaft is approved to be dropped from the height of
its stowage point.
3.1.6 Installation and removal of liferafts
(a) B
e very careful when installing or removing the liferafts at their
stowage positions. The glass-reinforced plastic (the container) can
be damaged and subsequently, the liferaft. They must not be rolled
or dropped during removal/installation.
3.1.7 Stowage of liferafts in rigid containers
NOTE: Liferafts are usually packed in rigid containers with no
other protection.
(a) Install the container the correct way up with the drainage apertures
at the bottom. Keep the drainage apertures clear of obstructions
such as the launching rack support structure.
NOTE: Each rack must be of the correct dimensions for the type
of container installed. The rack must be attached to the
ship’s structure.

3.1.8 Attachment of stowed liferafts

(a) Make sure the liferaft can be released easily when a manual
launch is necessary or for float-free operation
(refer to para 10)).
(b) Make sure the mechanism which holds the liferaft on the rack can
be removed easily in an emergency:
a slip-link or some other single-action release mechanism is
necessary.
3.1.9 Ramp Stowage
(a) On passenger ships which have a large number of inflatable
liferafts installed, the liferafts must be stowed away from the
lifeboat positions along the ship’s side.
(b) The liferafts should be installed on vertical racks or racks that
slope outboard to the sea. If the liferafts are installed in this way,
make sure each liferaft can be released independently, and that
the float-free attachment is satisfactory, (refer to 3.1.10).
3.1.10 Float-free attachment (hydrostatic release)
(a) A float-free launch is operated by a mechanism which inflates and
releases the liferaft automatically from a ship that is sinking.
NOTE: The hydrostatic release must be installed as given in the
manufacturer’s data sheet.
NOTE: If the hydrostatic release is a type which must be serviced
annually, it must be serviced by an approved servicing
station. The service station must record the date of
servicing on the small data plate attached to the unit.

NOTE: If the hydrostatic release is a type that must be discarded

(lifed item) it must be identified with the date of expiry
and must be replaced by that date. They usually have an
operational life which does not include a servicing period.
This type of hydrostatic release unit must be installed or
replaced by an approved service station.
3.1.11 A weak-link must be installed in the hydrostatic system to make sure a
liferaft is not pulled under the water by a sinking ship. The weak-link in
the system must have a breaking strength of 1.8 - 2.6 kN which makes
sure that it will pull the painter from the liferaft container, operate the
inflation system and release the liferaft from the ship.
3.1.12 If it is necessary to launch the liferaft manually, make sure the painter
line is attached to a strong point on the ship. The strong point must be
sufficient to support the pull of the painter line to operate the inflation
system.

1. General

1.1 The items given below are necessary to test the liferaft. When not in use, keep
the test equipment and all special tools in conditions that protect them from
damage:

2. Preparation

2.1 Keep the records of all the inflation tests. A recommended format for the test
cards is shown in (Figure 502).

2.2 Keep the liferaft away from draughts and direct sunlight, as change in
temperature affects pressure.

2.3 Keep a solution of hard soap (not detergent), water, and a quantity of clean,
dry, no-lint cloths in the area.

2.4 If a buoyancy tube needs to be tested separately because of a repair, carry out
a working pressure test (refer to section 3.5).

2.5 Calculate the change in the buoyancy tube pressure caused by any change in
temperature as follows:

2.5.1 Subtract 38 mm from the manometer indication for each degree Celsius
increase in temperature.
2.5.2 Add 38 mm to the manometer indication for each degree Celsius
decrease in temperature.
NOTE: The test result is not accepted if the temperature changes
by more than 3.5° C.

2.6 Calculate the change in pressure caused by barometric pressure as follows:

2.6.1 Subtract 10.2 mm from the manometer indication for each millibar
decrease in pressure.
2.6.2 Add 10.2 mm to the manometer indication for each millibar increase in
pressure.

3. Test procedures

3.1 General

NOTE: The upper buoyancy tube is the tube at the top when the
silver floor is not visible.
3.1.1 Test each part of the liferaft that inflates. Inflate the liferaft to the
specified pressure. The separate parts of the liferaft that are inflated by
the gas inflation system are:
(a) The upper buoyancy tube and two of the canopy support tubes.
(b) The lower buoyancy tube, the boarding ramp and two of the
canopy support tubes.

3.2 Additional test time intervals

3.2.1 Carry out a gas inflation (GI) test on liferafts that are over 5 years old
and then at 5 year intervals after that date.
NOTE: The liferafts do not need to have a Necessary Additional
Pressure (NAP) test section 3.4, until they are 10 years
old. It may be necessary to carry out the NAP test if the
liferaft has been repaired.
3.2.2 Carry out a NAP test and test the floor seams on any liferaft that is over
ten years old and subsequently at each 12 month service.

3.3 Gas Inflation test

3.3.1 Unpack the liferaft iaw Chap 2, and put it on the packing table.
3.3.2 Pull the painter line to inflate the liferaft.
3.3.3 Make sure the relief valves operate satisfactorily.
3.3.4 Let the liferaft stay for more than 10 minutes to let it become the correct
shape.
3.3.5 Use a manometer to make sure the gas pressure in each compartment
of the liferaft is at or above 1970 mm WG. Record the gas pressure in
each compartment. Record the temperature and barometric pressure.
Let the liferaft stay for more than 1 hour.
3.3.6 Make sure the gas pressure in each compartment (corrected for
temperature or barometric changes, if necessary) does not decrease by
more than 5% of the pressure recorded in 3.3.5.

NOTE: If there is a pressure decrease of more than 5%, examine

the liferaft for leaks, and if possible, repair it as given in
Chapter 6.

3.4 Necessary Additional Pressure (NAP) test

3.4.1 Carry out a NAP test as follows:

(a) Install the caps in all the relief valves, (Figure 503).
3.4.2 Inflate the liferaft to 3940 mm WG (twice the working pressure). Let it
stay undisturbed for approximately 5 minutes.
3.4.3 If the pressure decreases (calculated for temperature or barometric
changes) by more than of 5% (197 mm WG) the liferaft has failed the
NAP test. Discard the liferaft.
3.4.4 If the pressure decreases quickly during the NAP test and there is
audible ‘cracking’ from the liferaft, discard the liferaft.
NOTE: If there is sound from the liferaft but there is no pressure
decrease, the test is satisfactory.

3.5 Working pressure test

NOTE: If the liferaft is subjected to the gas inflation test (Para 3C),
it is not necessary to carry out the working pressure test,
provided no repair work is carried out.
NOTE: This procedure is given to carry out a test of the buoyancy
tubes separately, but the test can be carried out on the
upper and lower buoyancy tubes at the same time.
3.5.1 Carry out a working pressure test as follows:
(a) Install the caps in all relief valves (Figure 503).
(b) Inflate the upper buoyancy tube and the canopy support tubes that
are connected to it to between 1970 and 2100 mm water gauge.
Record the temperature and barometric pressure.
(c) Disconnect the air supply and connect the manometer
(Figure 501).
(d) Make sure there are no leaks at the test equipment connections.
Use a brush to apply a solution of soapy water (if necessary) to
carry out a test at each joint.

(e) Let the pressure stay in the upper buoyancy tube for 30 minutes.
If the indicated pressure (corrected for temperature or barometric
changes, if necessary) is not less than 1970 mm WG, record the
indicated the pressure.
(f) Let the pressure stay in the upper buoyancy tube for 60 minutes
more. If the inflation pressure (corrected for temperature or
barometric changes, if necessary) decreases by more than 5%,
reject the liferaft.
(g) If the pressure decrease is more than 5%, look for leaks and
porous fabric. If possible, repair the liferaft (refer to Chapter 6) in
the limits given and carry out a test of the buoyancy tube again.
(h) Deflate the upper buoyancy tube.
(i) Carry out the working pressure procedure again (3.5.1), for the
lower buoyancy tube, the ramp and the canopy support tubes
connected to it.

3.6 Pressure Relief and Transfer valves

3.6.1 Test the relief valves as follows:

(a) Install the plugs in the relief valves (Figure 503).
(b) Connect the manometer to the liferaft (refer to Figure 501)
(c) Inflate the liferaft to 2530 mm WG.
(d) Remove the plugs from the relief valves.
(e) Make sure the valves open and release the air pressure
immediately, and within a period of approximately 30 minutes,
close again. The indicated pressure on the manometer when the
valves are closed must not be less than 1970 mm WG (Figure
506).
NOTE: Any valves which do not close correctly, must be replaced,
(Refer to Chapter 6, Section 7).
3.6.2 Test the transfer valves as follows:
(a) Connect the manometer to the liferaft, (refer to Figure 501).
(b) Inflate the liferaft to 1970 mm WG.
(c) After 30 minutes the ramp shall maintain its full shape. Transfer
valves which do not hold air must be replaced.

SURVIVA
SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

3.7 Floor seam test

3.7.1 Carry out a floor seam test as follows:

NOTE: A floor seam test must be carried out when the liferaft is
10 years old and subsequently at each 12 month service.
(a) Put a person of average weight onto the floor of the liferaft. The
person must walk around the edge of the floor, as near to the
buoyancy tubes as possible. Repeat this test with the liferaft
turned over.
(b) Examine the floor and buoyancy bond when the persons weight is
on it to make sure it is satisfactory.
NOTE: If the bond between the floor and the buoyancy tubes
is not satisfactory, refer to Chapter 6 for the repair
procedure.

3.8 Function test

3.8.1 Carry out a full function test as follows:

NOTE: A full function test may be necessary to satisfy the local
Inspecting Authority.
NOTE: Carry out the test in an air temperature of between of 18o
and 20o C.
(a) Use a stopwatch (before inflation cycle is started at 3H(1)(b)) to
make sure it does not take more than 60 seconds to reach the ‘full
working pressure’ (1970 mm WG) of the liferaft.
(b) Use a spring balance to test the load necessary to start the
inflation cycle. The load must not be more than15.3 kgf.
(c) Make sure all the buoyancy tubes, boarding ramp and canopy
struts fully inflate and are the correct shape.
(d) Make sure the liferaft is the correct shape.

3.9 Gas cylinders

3.9.1 Cylinder valve installation

If a cylinder is required to be hydrostatically tested or if a cylinder
adaptor has been removed then it must be refitted as follows:
(a) Prior to the cylinder adaptor being fitted to the bare cylinder, apply
the correct number of turns of PTFE tape, Table 502. The tape
must be applied to the threads of the cylinder adaptor, (Figure
505).
(b) The charge weight is specified in the IPL section of this service
manual.
(c) The cylinder is to be charged following the procedures
recommended by the inflation system manufacturer. Reference
to these can be found in the Associated Publication section in the
relevant liferaft service manual.

3.9.2 Chemical leak testing

Testing for leaks must be carried out as follows, as per Method A or
Method B:
Method A. 30-day quarantine period
(a) Check the weight of the cylinder at regular intervals during the
30-day quarantine period.
(b) After thirty (30) days the weight must be the same as when it was
first filled.
(c) If the weight has decreased, corrective action must be taken and
the above process repeated.
WARNING: A CHARGED CYLINDER SHOWING LOSS OF WEIGHT, CANNOT
BE USED IN SERVICE.
(d) If weight is the same, the cylinder can be used in service.
Method B. Chemical leak test
(a) Before the gas cylinder is chemically leak tested, the mass of the
gas in the cylinder is to be recorded, ensuring that it is within the
limits specified in the service manual.
If there is insufficient gas in the cylinder, and/or a leak is detected,
corrective action should be taken to determine the cause of the
leak.
WARNING: A CHARGED CYLINDER SHOWING LOSS OF WEIGHT, CANNOT
BE USED IN SERVICE.
CAUTION: FOR THESE TESTS ONLY USE THE LEAK DETECTION
TEST KIT AS LISTED IN CHAPTER 10.
(b) Lay the cylinder to be tested on its side, in a rack, so that the valve
end is protruding, (Figure 506). Ensure the valve and shoulder of
the cylinder are free from dust and other contaminates by carefully
wiping using a clean, dry cloth. Remove the dust cap to clean the
valve then replace the cap loosely.
(c) Using the measuring cylinder provided in the test kit, transfer 25ml
of the test solution into a polythene bag. The initial colour of the
test solution will be a pink color.

(d) Attach the open end of the bag over valve head and attach it to the
cylinder body using one or more elastic bands. Make sure there
are no air gaps in the seal, (Figure 506).
(e) The polythene bag shall then hang 20 cm off the valve end of the
cylinder with the test solution in one corner.
(f) Maintain the test for a period of not less than one hour. Remove
the bag, (ends closed), and gently shake the solution. Make the
observation as detailed below.
Alternatively the bag can be shaken while still hanging from the
cylinder.
(g) A control sample is necessary, this is made by introducing 25 ml
of test solution into a bag which is not fitted to a cylinder, but must
be sealed at the open end, to exclude contamination from the
atmosphere. This bag must be placed on the rack in the vicinity of
the cylinders under test, and the above test method applied.
Observations
(a) All tests are to be recorded on a sheet similar to sample provided
in Appendix 5.
(b) Carbon dioxide leaking from the cylinder will cause the pink colour
of the test solution to be lost and the test solution will become
clear.
(c) If no colour change is observed there is no leak of gas from the
cylinder.
(d) The control sample shall not change colour during the test.
If a colour change takes place, this indicates that the atmosphere
in the test area is contaminated with carbon dioxide and tests
carried out under this control sample are therefore invalidated.
(e) Tests shall be repeated after corrective action has been taken on
the atmosphere, i.e. area ventilated.
NOTE: This method may also be adapted to check CO2 leakage
from the base of cylinders, by taping a suitable sized
plastic bag over the cylinder. Make sure the welded seam
is inside the bag. The test is then carried out as per the
above method.

3.9.3 Weight testing

Check the cylinder weight. The weight must be the same as that given on the
cylinder data label. The weight recorded on the cylinder data label does not
include the cylinder recoil caps.

WARNING: INSTALL A RECOIL CAP ON THE OUTLET OF A FULLY CHARGED

GAS CYLINDER BEFORE MOVING IT. THE GAS CYLINDER CAN
BECOME A PROJECTILE IF IT IS DISCHARGED ACCIDENTALLY
AND CAN CAUSE INJURY AND DEATH.
WARNING: HOLD THE GAS CYLINDER IN A VICE OR SAFE CLAMPING
MECHANISM WHEN INSTALLING OR REMOVING AN OPERATING
HEAD.
3.9.4 Blast testing
The high pressure inflation hose, attached to the inlet valve connection, must
be pressure tested as follows:

NOTE: This Blast test must be performed using the purpose-made

Blast test valve / Syphon tube (see Table 503). If a TPED
compliant cylinder is to be used, then it is recommended
that this is done so in conjunction with a 16.9 litre cylinder
– bare cylinder (P/N 41947001), description CYLINDER M
BARE 16.9 lt 250 bar.

This cylinder for blast testing should be charged with

11.26kg CO2 + 0.36kg N2.

The cylinder valve should be installed into the cylinder

with 2 turns of PTFE tape & torqued to 240 Nm (177 ftLb)
+10% -0%. This blast test cylinder assembly is not
suitable for transportation in USA/Canada.
NOTE: If a USDOT compliant cylinder is to be used, then it is
recommended that this is done in conjunction with a
960 cu.in. cylinder – bare cylinder (P/N 42117001). This
cylinder for blast testing, should be charged with 8.80 kg
CO2 + 0.44 kg N2.

The cylinder valve should be installed into the cylinder

with 2 turns of PTFE tape & torqued to 220 Nm +10% / -0
Nm.

A cylinder adaptor is required to fit the valve onto the

cylinder, (see Table 503).

(e) Before you do a blast test, examine the outer surface of the hose.
Obey the manufacturer’s Guidance Note.
(f) Connect one HP hose at a time, to the fitting on the blast test
cylinder valve, (Figure 507 and Figure 508). The correct torque
value for this hose attachment can be found in Chapter 1,
Table 101, Torque settings.
CAUTION: FOR THE FIRST BLAST, KEEP HANDS AWAY FROM THE
INLET VALVE IN CASE OF CO2 BURN.
(g) It is necessary to blast test each CO2 inlet valve three times,
(Figure 508).
(h) For each blast, the red handles of the Blast test cylinder should be
closed together, Figure 508). The blast should last for 1 second.
(i) If no gas leakage is observed on the first blast, then the second
and third blasts should be conducted with the one hand near the
inlet valve to detect leakage, BUT NOT IN CONTACT with it.
(j) The hose should now be disconnected from the blast cylinder.
(k) After you do a blast test, examine the outer surface of the hose.
Obey the manufacturer’s Guidance Note.
(l) Examine the O-rings. Obey the manufacturer’s Guidance Note.
(m) Continue to pack the life raft in accordance with this service
manual.

1. General

1.1 Repairs to fabrics normally consist of patching the damage with fabric patches.
The patching fabric must be the same type of material as the item under repair
(e.g. material RFD 1015 must be replaced with RFD 1015).

1.2 When marking fabrics, use a silver ballpoint pen (Schmidt 700) or BIC Crystal
red Pen or wax (e.g. Chinagraph) crayon. If a ‘major’ repair is carried out record
the repairs on the liferaft log card.

1.3 RAFT CONDEMNATION PROCEDURE: If a raft has been condemned, it must

be damaged further so that it cannot be used.

The raft identification label should be separated from the raft and returned with
a completed condemnation form, to the manufacturer.

All remaining material must be disposed off according to the local legislation.

Table 601 lists a number of possible reasons, although further reasons may
exist. A raft is condemned if;

2. Adhesive
WARNING: ADHESIVES ARE FLAMMABLE. KEEP WELL AWAY FROM NAKED
FLAMES. USE ONLY IN A WELL VENTILATED ATMOSPHERE.
AVOID CONTACT WITH EYES. AVOID BREATHING FUMES. USE
BARRIER CREAM ON HANDS AND WASH AFTER USE.

2.1 The adhesive used for repairs to air-holding components and load-bearing
components, is a two part polychloroprene mix to Specification RFD 549 -
Bostik 486.

2.2 Only the adhesive specified in Step 2A shall be used for repairs. Although other
unspecified adhesives may apparently bond surfaces together, they may also
have unexpected negative side effects which will eventually cause premature
failure.

2.3 The adhesive to be used for repairs to the floor insulation layer is a single
part, pressure sensitive, acrylic emulsion - Bostik Aquagrip 536 - which
requires no mixing. In addition, no special preparation of surfaces is appropriate
as long as they are clean and dust-free.

2.4 Only the adhesives specified in Paragraph 2B and 2C shall be used for repairs.
They have been selected after careful analysis of their behaviour.Although
other unspecified adhesives may apparently bond surfaces together, they
may also have unexpected negative side effects which will eventually cause
premature seam failure.

2.5 Mixing Instructions for RFD 549 adhesive

CAUTION: THE MIXING PROCEDURE MUST BE FOLLOWED EXACTLY
SO THAT THE CURING AGENT WILL NOT SEPARATE FROM
THE ADHESIVE.
THE MEASURED VOLUME OF THE CURING AGENT MUST
BE POURED INTO THE APPROPRIATE QUANTITY OF THE
ADHESIVE, STIRRING CONSTANTLY, AND FOR A MINIMUM
OF FIVE MINUTES.
AVOID PARTIAL QUANTITY MIXES IF POSSIBLE. THE
ADHESIVE CAN NOT BE STORED READY-MIXED AS IT
BECOMES UNUSABLE AFTER A FEW HOURS.
2.5.1 RFD 549 is a two-part adhesive. Part 1 is the adhesive, supplied in
a can. Part 2 is the curing agent (Bostikure), supplied in a bottle. It is
recommended that the constituents must be mixed together in these
total quantities. After a bottle of curing agent has been opened, moisture
will enter and the curing agent will soon deteriorate if it is not used.

Service Manual
M228 Chapter 6: Repair
Jun/07 Page 604
SURVIVA
SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

2.5.2 Partial amounts of the mixture may be made up but, after the curing
agent has been opened, the contents start to deteriorate. Any remaining
curing agent must be discarded two weeks after it is opened.
2.5.3 If mixing partial amounts, put the cap back on the curing agent
bottle immediately after taking the measured quantity. This prevents
evaporation and entry of moisture. If there is any sign of cloudiness
in the liquid, this indicates that moisture is present and the complete
contents of the bottle must be discarded.
2.5.4 Graduated measuring vessels must be used to make sure the two parts
are mixed together in the ration of 25 measures (by volume) of adhesive
to one measure of curing agent. The measuring vessels must be kept
clean and dry.
2.5.5 Keep the adhesive, curing agent and mixed adhesive in completely
sealed airtight containers.
2.5.6 Adhesive must not be used outside the temperature range +5° to +30°
Celsius or when the relative humidity exceeds 70%.
2.5.7 After the adhesive has been used to join surfaces, it will cure in two to
four days at 20° Celsius. At higher temperatures the curing time will be
reduced, and at lower temperatures the curing time will increase.
2.5.8 For each batch of mixed adhesive, keep a sample and monitor it for
development of cure. Use the sample to join two pieces of fabric. Keep
the joined fabric as proof of the quality of the adhesive.
CAUTION: THE COMPONENTS AND MIXED ADHESIVE MUST BE KEPT
IN COMPLETELY SEALED AIRTIGHT CONTAINERS. MIXED
SOLUTION BECOMES UNUSABLE AFTER A FEW HOURS
AND CAN NOT BE STORED FOR LONGER PERIODS.
2.5.9 The mixed adhesive will thicken and become unusable within four to six
hours. This time depends on workshop temperature and the quantity
of exposure to air. If the adhesive can be easily applied as a normal
smooth and even layer, it is still useable.

3. Preparation of coated surfaces

WARNING: ONLY COATED SURFACES MAY BE INCLUDED IN REPAIRS.

3.1 Polyurethane-proofed surfaces.

CAUTION: THOROUGHLY CLEAN POLYURETHANE-PROOFED
SURFACES WITH TOLUENE SOLVENT AND/OR SOAP
AND WATER TO REMOVE SURFACE CONTAMINATION
COMPLETELY.
CAUTION: MEK (METHYL ETHYL KETONE) SOLVENT MUST BE USED
TO CORRECTLY PRIME THE HEAVY DUTY POLYURETHANE
COATING ON THE MATERIAL USED FOR THE BUOYANCY
CHAMBERS (FLOOR, ETC.). TOLUENE OR PETROLEUM
TYPE CLEANING SOLVENTS ARE NOT EFFECTIVE FOR
THIS PURPOSE.
3.1.1 The Nylon fabric used for air-holding chambers has a heavy-duty
Polyurethane coating which has been compounded to give a high
resistance to abrasion.
3.1.2 These Polyurethane coated fabrics must be prepared for bonding
by chemically priming the coated surfaces with the solvent MEK
immediately as soon as the solvent has evaporated, but within 60
seconds before application of the first coat of adhesive.
You may experiment with identical fabrics to find the optimum time
within which the adhesive must be applied, at any given temperature.
NOTE: After 60 seconds the prepared surface will become less
receptive to the adhesive.
3.1.3 Apply the solvent with a clean lint-free fabric pad, wet but not dripping
with the solvent. Adequate preparation of the surface is shown by the
development of a matt appearance and a limited degree of tackiness.
The pad should become discoloured.
3.1.4 Attempts to prime Polyurethane surfaces chemically in a hot humid
environment can cause the formation of atmospheric dew. This is
because rapid evaporation of the MEK solvent causes the surface
temperature to decrease. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO JOIN SURFACES IN
THESE CONDITIONS, AS POOR ADHESION WILL RESULT.

Jun/07 Page 606
SURVIVA
SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

3.1.5 Repeated applications of MEK solvent on a clean polyurethane

surface tend to become less effective. Apply the first coat of adhesive
immediately after the first MEK wipe.
3.1.6 Do not remove residual adhesive from seaming surfaces which have
been separated, unless it can be easily peeled off. To make a smooth
surface, use toluene to rub off the old adhesive.

3.2 Polychloroprene and natural rubber surfaces

3.2.1 Polychloroprene and natural rubber valve flanges must be made rough
by machine buffing or with a rotary wire brush.
3.2.2 Immediately after buffing and before applying adhesive, use a clean
cloth dampened with toluene solvent to remove all rubber dust and
surface contamination.
CAUTION: THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS SOLVENT RUB MUST BE
EMPHASISED. IT SHOULD NOT BE A SCRUBBING AND
CONVERSELY IT MUST NOT BE A MERE WIPE.
3.2.3 An area that has been adequately prepared by buffing will have a deep
matt black finish, with no shine or waxy appearance remaining. The
deep matt black appearance will remain after the solvent rub. The only
test for an adequately prepared surface is the drag felt when the surface
is rubbed with a finger.
3.2.4 Apply adhesive to the prepared area within 8 hours after cleaning with
the solvent rub, i.e. before the return of surface contamination.
4. Application of adhesive

4.1 RFD 549 adhesive:

4.1.1 For the purposes of repair, the words ‘tacky’ and aggressive tack’ are
defined thus:
(a) When the word ‘tacky’ is used, it means that if the fingers are
lightly dragged across the adhesive, it tends to pull off the base
material, or off the previous coat.

SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

(b) When the expression ‘aggressive tack’ is used, this means that
when applying light finger pressure to the adhesive, the adhesive
surface tends to retain (stick to) the fingers and does not transfer
from the base fabric. When testing a surface with a finger, the
adhesive must show aggressive tack, but no adhesive should
remain on the finger.
WARNING: NO TEXTILE JOINTS: WHEN JOINING TWO SURFACES
TOGETHER, MAKE SURE THE SURFACES ARE PROOF SIDE
TO PROOF SIDE. DO NOT USE THE TEXTILE SIDE FOR ANY
REPAIRS.
4.1.2 Apply three coats of unthinned adhesive to each mating surface. Allow
each coat to become tacky before applying subsequent coats.
4.1.3 When the third coat develops an aggressive tack, apply the patch or
make the seam. Roll well, with a hand roller, to remove any air bubbles,
rucks or creases.
4.1.4 Take care when rolling down seams and patches, particularly on curved
edges. Avoid making rucks and creases. All seams MUST be rolled
twice.
4.1.5 If a coat has dried, it may be relivened by a cloth dampened, but not
dripping, with toluene solvent. Apply just enough solvent to recreate an
aggressive tack on the surface. Relivening may be carried out, up to 3
hours after the application of the first coat of adhesive, but no later.
4.1.6 Each repair must be completed within 3 hours of commencement.
NOTE: A DRY JOINT will result if:

— The adhesive becomes too dry between coats

or at seam make-up.
— Any air bubbles are not completely rolled out
— The mating surfaces are dry before patches
are positioned.

A dry joint may appear good but will be easily pulled apart.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE SOLVENTS TO REMOVE SURPLUS ADHESIVE

FROM REPAIR AREAS, UNLESS THE JOINT HAS CURED
THOROUGHLY.

4.2 Aquagrip 536 adhesive

4.2.1 Using a large paint brush, apply a generous and uniform coating of
adhesive to both joint surfaces and leave until the water base has
evaporated. (The film becomes almost entirely clear; this may take
several hours, dependant upon local conditions).
4.2.2 When there is no residual water and the layer does not lift with an
applied finger, make the joint by rolling the insulation material onto the
floor of the raft. Make sure the material is properly aligned prior to initial
contact. Rolling must be gentle and uniform, working from the centre of
the area toward the edges, expelling any air.
NOTE: A proper join shall demonstrate no failure of the adhesive
when a sample of insulation is peeled forcefully from the
floor; the foam layer tears instead.
5. Repair damaged areas

5.1 Many of the seams in Surviva 50/100 reversible liferafts, particularly the air
holding seams, are of welded construction. Once welded, these seams can not
be opened.

In a correctly welded seam it is not possible to find the interface between the
two polyurethane surfaces.

For this type of construction, some of the traditional methods of repair, i.e.
those which started with, “separating a structure joined by adhesive”, have
been replaced as described in this Section. The liferaft buoyancies, floor and
canopy (non air holding joints) are held together with adhesive.

5.2 Note that a correct adhesive-jointed seam or assembly of polyurethane proofed

fabric and adhesive, is very strong. It is possible to cause damage to the
proofed coat if careless attempts are made to tear apart two surfaces joined
by adhesive, particularly if forces are applied in a manner not normally found
during service.

WARNING: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THE HOT AIR GUN BE

USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH TOLUENE SOLVENT. TOLUENE IS
EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE AND SHOULD BE KEPT AWAY FROM
THE HOT AIR GUN.

NOTE: To RELEASE ADHESIVE JOINTED SEAMS or assemblies

formed using polyurethane adhesive, use the following
technique:

— It is recommended that a hot air gun is used

(max.temp. 70°C) together with the careful use
of a spatula or other suitable tool.
NOTE: To RELEASE ADHESIVE JOINTED SEAMS or assemblies
formed using polychloroprene adhesive, use ONE of the
following techniques:

It is recommended that one of the following is used,

together with the careful use of a spatula or other suitable
tool.

— A hot air gun (max.temperature 70°C) or

— Toluene solvent.

5.3 Patches

5.3.1 Repair patches must overlap at least 25 mm beyond the edge of the
damage, Figure 601 e.g:
(a) If the diameter of a jagged aperture is 25 mm, the patch must be at
least 75 mm diameter.
(b) If a straight tear is 25 mm long, the patch must be at least
75 mm x 50 mm.
(c) Treat ‘L’ shaped tears as apertures; calculate the “diameter” as the
distance between the ends of the tear.
5.3.2 Patches must be circular or rectangular with rounded corners, (Figure
601).
5.3.3 Repair patches on air-holding components may be made from either
fabric RFD1015,Type 1, PN 10772009 (single-sided PU ‘proofing’) or
RFD1015,Type 2, PN 10773009 (Double-sided PU ‘proofing’).
5.3.4 Where other components are to be bonded on top of the patch use only
RFD1015 Type 2 Fabric, PN 10773009 (Double-sided PU ‘proofing’).

5.4 Applying Patches and Tapes

5.4.1 To apply patches or tapes, the following procedure must be followed:

(a) Cut the patch to size.
(b) Prepare and clean the area as described in Step 3.
(c) When the final adhesive coat develops an aggressive tack, put the
patch in position and use a hand roller to roll it into firm contact.
Make sure the patch is orientated correctly i.e. ‘proof’ surface to
‘proof’ surface. Adhesive joints are not permitted to join one or
more textile surfaces.
(d) Use a spatula to remove any air bubbles from under the patch.
(e) After a repair to an inflatable chamber has cured, the inflatable
chamber must be subjected to a pressure holding test.
(f) If the patch repairs damage, that lies along the edge of a seam
weld then the patch must extend across the width of the seam
weld to the central seam joint (Figure 602).
5.4.2 To apply tape, use exactly the same manner that is used for patches.
Cut a radius on the corners of the tape ends before sticking the
surfaces together; overlap tape ends by 50 mm.

5.5 Testing repairs (Refer to Chapter 5)

5.5.1 Make sure the adhesive cures completely before testing.

5.5.2 When carrying out repairs to air holding compartments, carry out a
working pressure test for each compartment.

5.6 Repair limits

5.6.1 Patches (external) - Use a patch to repair, if:

(a) The damage does not enter a seam.
(b) The damage does not pass under a major anchorage point, such
as a towing point or bowsing patch, or within 100 mm one of these
points.
(c) The maximum area of the patch is not more than one eighth of the
total panel area.

5.7 More extensive damage

5.7.1 Repairs not described in this manual are not permitted except by
permission from the Design Authority, Survitec Group Ltd. Separate
application must be made for each occasion when repair is proposed.
6. Component repair

6.1 Pressure Relief Valve

Disassembly of the pressure relief valve is not permitted. Replace the complete
assembly:

6.1.1 Removal method

NOTE: If the correct procedure is followed there is no requirement
at any stage to cut or patch the liferaft fabric.
(a) Inflate the liferaft to working pressure.
(b) Using a ½” square drive ratchet and the appropriate adaptor tool
(refer to Chapter 10), loosen both PRV bodies until it is possible to
unscrew the PRV assembly by hand.
(c) Deflate the upper and lower buoyancies.
(d) Holding the PRV nut through the buoyancy fabric, unscrew the
valve body.
(e) Remove all components of the faulty PRV, including the nut.
The nut can be removed through the hole from which the valve
body was removed. This is only possible with the liferaft in the
deflated state.
(f) Discard all parts of the faulty PRV; Do not reuse any of them.

6.1.2 Fitting a new PRV

NOTE: Make sure that the following steps be followed
independently for each air-holding chamber.
WARNING: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD OLD COMPONENTS BE
MIXED WITH NEW COMPONENTS.
REPLACE THE ENTIRE PRV ASSEMBLY.
DO NOT RE-USE ANY OLD COMPONENTS.
NOTE: Make sure all surfaces are clean and dry before fitting the
new PRV.
(a) Assemble the valve body as shown in (Figure 603).
Place the slip disc, washer and latex gasket onto the valve body.
NOTE: The ridged face of the washer should be positioned
towards the latex gasket.
(b) Push the nut into the hole from which the faulty one was removed.
(c) Holding the nut in place, through the buoyancy fabric, hand‑tighten
the pre-assembled “outboard” components of the PRV onto the
nut.
Make sure that the latex gasket remains flat when it mates against
the PRV doubler.

CAUTION: WHEN HAND-TIGHTENING A NEW PRV ASSEMBLY INTO

THE LIFERAFT, MAKE SURE THAT;
(i) the valve seating area of the doubler is held flat.
(ii) the internal nut makes complete contact against the doubler
and does not trap any buoyancy fabric.
(iii) while tightening the valve, the nut is held motionless against
the doubler.
(d) Slowly inflate the liferaft buoyancy. Using a calibrated ½” square
drive torque wrench and the correct adaptor tool, tighten the PRV
from the outside. Please refer to Chapter 1, Table 101 for torque
settings.

SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

NOTE: The pressure inside the buoyancy will prevent the nut from
turning during the tightening process.
NOTE: Make sure that the latex gasket remains undistorted, as it
tightens against the PRV doubler.
WARNING: ONLY THE TORQUE VALUE SPECIFIED SHOULD BE APPLIED.
WHEN THE CORRECT TORQUE IS ACHIEVED FOR THE
FIRST TIME, THE PRV MUST NOT BE TIGHTENED AGAIN. IF
RE‑TIGHTENING IS NECESSARY A COMPLETE NEW PRV MUST
BE FITTED.
(e) Repeat Steps 6.1.2 (a) thru 6.1.2 (d) for the remaining buoyancy.
(f) Complete and record an air-holding test as described in Chapter 5.
Record the relief and reseat pressures of the new PRV.

6.2 Topping-up valve

6.2.1 Cut out the defective valve.

6.2.2 Make a circular patch of material of the correct size. The patch must
have a minimum diameter 50 mm larger than the aperture cut, to
remove the defective valve. Punch a star cut in the centre of the new
patch. This must be done using tool stated in Chapter 10.
6.2.3 Attach the valve to the patch and tighten it to the stated torque value in
Chapter 1, Table 101.
6.2.4 Use RFD 549 adhesive to join this assembly to the liferaft so that it has
a minimum 25 mm overlap, on the liferaft material.

6.3 Inflation valve

6.3.1 The inflation valves have identical jet bores, as stated below. The size
of the jet bore is stamped in the flat surface of the valve body. The
stamp also shows the direction of the jetholes.
6.3.2 The bore size for both bouyancies is 2.4 mm.
6.3.3 There is only one size of cross head bolt for this valve.

M228 Chapter 6: Repair
Nov/16 Page 616
SURVIVA
SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

6.3.4 The assembly requires an aperture of 22 mm diameter in the buoyancy

chamber. The aperture is reinforced at this point.
(a) To install an inflation valve, access to the inside of the buoyancy
chamber is required. This is done through a slit approximately 150
mm long, made in the buoyancy close to the inlet valve position.
(b) After the slit has been made, access to the inner parts of the inlet
check valve, is possible.
(c) To disassemble the inflation valve, remove the fixing nut and the
upper plate from the valve. Pull the body of the valve into the
inside of the liner then remove it from the buoyancy chamber.
(d) To install a new inflation valve, first disassemble the nut and the
outer plate from the valve.
(e) The sealing ring and inner plate are attached permanently to the
inflation valve body.
(f) Using all new components assemble the inflation valve unit,
complete with the sealing ring and inner plate, through the liner
and the 22 mm hole in the buoyancy panel.
(g) Fit the outer plate and nut to the inflation valve unit, tightening
them by hand, (Figure 604).
(h) Adjust the direction of the jet holes in the inflation valve, to point
along the axis of the buoyancy tube and the liner. Use a 30 mm
torque spanner and 19 mm socket to tighten the assembly , to the
stated torque value in, Chapter 1, Table 101.
A special tool, (Chapter 10), is shaped to match the body of the
valve. The tool can be used with a 19 mm socket.
(i) At a later stage of assembly, assemble the hoses using the Banjo
bolts.
(j) Use the patching procedure to repair the access slit.

6.4 Transfer valves, Ramp

6.4.1 Carefully peel the boarding ramp away from its doubler, which attaches
it to the buoyancy tube. This exposes the valve, which can be peeled
off.
6.4.2 Reassembly is the reverse of this procedure. Tighten the nut to the
correct torque. Please refer to Chapter 1, Table 101, for correct torque
value.

6.5 Minor cylinder repair

If cylinder surface finish has been damaged repair as follows;

6.5.1 Clean the surface to the bare metal.

6.5.2 Apply the paint primer to the damaged area, as per the manufacturer’s
instructions.
6.5.3 When dry, as per the manufacturers instructions, apply the required
number of top coats in the correct colour. Please refer to Chapter 10 for
paint repair kit.

6.6 Miscellaneous

6.6.1 Replace damaged painter, operating lanyard or doorway bowsing lines

with new assemblies.
7. Rigid containers

7.1 Classification of structural repairs

7.1.1 Only minor repairs to glass reinforced plastic (GRP) containers are
permitted. These are listed below. When damage is more than these
limits, send the container to an approved glass fibre repair depot for
major repair.

7.2 Repair limits

7.2.1 The limits of minor repairs are:

(a) Damage to the gelcoat only, which does not penetrate the glass
fibre mat.
(b) Damage to the painted surface.

Service Manual
M228 Chapter 6: Repair
Nov/16 Page 618
SURVIVA
SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

7.2.2 The limits of major repairs are:

(a) Apertures or penetrating damage (i.e. through the glass fibre mat)
over an area of less than 77 square centimetres on the outer
surface of the container.
(b) Apertures or penetrating damage over an area of less than
58 square centimetres on the inner surface of the container.
(c) Breakage/cracks of the rims on either half of the container shell.
NOTE: The limits above, apply to the TOTAL area of damage, so
that if, for example, repair is required at both ends of the
container, then the permissible areas of repair for each
end must not TOGETHER total more than the prescribed
limits.

7.3 Other repairs

WARNING: WHEN WORKING WITH GLASS FIBRE SURFACES, HANDS,

ARMS AND FACES MUST BE PROTECTED. WEAR A FACE MASK.
7.3.1 Replace damaged or illegible labels. Re-stencil illegible markings.

7.4 Gelcoat

7.4.1 This is the outer surface of the container. Damage to the gelcoat does
not affect the GRP, although it may expose it to view. If only the gelcoat
is damaged, repair it with a GRP filler, such as Isopon:
(a) Clean the damaged area with acetone to remove all
contamination.
(b) Spread the GRP filler until is higher than the adjacent surface of
the container.
(c) Cover the GRP filler with adhesive tape and allow it to cure.
(d) Remove the tape and abrade the repaired area. Rub down the
surface with abrasive papers until it is level with the container
surface.

Service Manual
M228 Chapter 6: Repair

SURVIVA
SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

7.4.2 To paint the container:

(a) Remove all loose labels.
(b) Remove grease, tar etc. with a suitable solvent, e.g. toluene.
(c) Wash the container with a solution of detergent and water and
rinse with clean water.
(d) Fill any cracks or voids in the gelcoat with GRP filler as per Step 1
above.
(e) Spray paint one coat of white Epimide paint or Polyurethane paint.

7.5 Major structural repairs

7.5.1 A major repair is required for any damage to a container that is more
serious than damage to the gelcoat only. Major repairs to the glass fibre
containers are not permitted except by specially trained and approved
personnel.
7.5.2 The limits of repair are previously given. If container damage is more
than these limits, do not attempt to repair the container. The damaged
shell or shells of the container must be replaced.

1. General

1.1 The work area must be clean and dry. It must not have any sharp edges. It is
recommended that the work surface is covered with Vinyl material.

1.2 Special Tools, Equipment and Materials: Refer to Chapter 10 for the list of
items that are necessary for assembly and packing the liferaft again.

1.3 In the packing procedure, components which are given in the Illustrated Parts
List (Chapter 11) and Consumables and Equipment (Chapter 10) are given in
italic print.

1.4 For preparation and packing of the liferaft and its equipment, use bowline knots
unless instructed otherwise. Put adhesive tape (25 mm wide) around the knots
unless instructed otherwise. The cut ends of synthetic fibre cords must be heat
sealed to prevent fraying.

2. Unit handing and configuration

2.1 A 50-person liferaft is not handed (manufactured as left-hand or right-hand).

A 100-person liferaft is made from two 50-person liferafts, which have mating
attachment patches. The painter line is attached to the ‘Master’ liferaft and the
bowsing line to the slave liferaft.

2.2 When a 50 or 100 person liferaft is packed into its container, the packing
configuration will be identified as a Type A or a Type B assembly.
The difference in a Type A or a Type B configuration is because the painter
and bowsing lines exit out of the container at opposite ends. The applicable
configuration will be installed on the ship, as necessary.

2.3 Type A configuration unit, (when looking, outboard at the ship’s installation),
has the painter at the left-hand end and the bowsing line at the right-hand end.

Type B configuration has the opposite arrangement. The Type B configuration

is packed as a mirror image of the Type A configuration.
NOTE: When a liferaft is inflated, the container hinge must be
facing away from the embarkation platform.

Service Manual
M228 Chapter 8: Assembly and Repacking
Nov/16 Page 803
SURVIVA
SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

2.4 This chapter and its illustrations refer to each liferaft packed as a Type A
configuration. In general the Type B configuration is opposite but some
differences are given in the text.

NOTE: When packing a 100-person liferaft, the left hand liferaft

always has the black side of the floor facing up. The right-
hand liferaft always has the silver side of the floor facing
up.

2.5 When packing the liferafts for 100 persons, the attachment patch on each
liferaft is in a position so that it can be attached to the opposite hand patch on
the other liferaft.

3. Container preparation

3.1 Internal preparation

3.1.1 Check that all internal surfaces of the container are completely covered
with 25 mm layer of protective sponge, (Figure 801). The internal
painter and bowsing line pockets must be affixed directly to the GRP.
3.1.2 Check the external painter line pocket and the internal pockets are
secure, (Figure 802).
(a) If a pocket is damaged, it must be replaced.
(b) If a pocket is separating from the container, it must be removed
and joined in the same position.
(c) Pockets should be equi-spaced about the centre line of the
container, with the top edge adjacent to the sealing lip of the
container.
3.1.3 Replace the container closure seal, fitted to the upper container half.

3.2 Preparing the container for attaching hinges (opional)

3.2.1 If preferred, the existing hinge strip can be removed from the container
and the stained area of the container cleaned. This process is time
consuming and involves the use of fine emery paper to skin the Gelcoat
of the container.
3.2.2 Obtain the empty container halves.
3.2.3 Drill two, 10 mm holes, in the upper and lower container halfs. The
holes are to be drilled at both left and right sides. Refer to (Figure 803a)
for location and measurements.
(a) 60 mm up from horizontal edge.
(b) For 50 Person - Holes are located 95 mm
3.2.4 Move the foam lining on the inside of the container to one side. Fit a bolt
and washer through the drilled hole on the lower half of the container
(Figure 803b).
3.2.5 On the outside of the container, fit a penny washer and a locking
washer to the bolt , (Figure 803b).
3.2.6 Fit an eyenut onto the bolt and tighten. Make sure the eyenut is aligned
in a vertical position, (Figure 803b).
3.2.7 Repeat steps 3.2.3 to 3.2.6, for the remaining side.
NOTE: The next steps can be completed when both container
halves have enclosed the liferaft and straps have been
applied.
3.2.8 Cut and heat seal a 1 metre length of 4000 lb cord.
3.2.9 Insert the 4000 lb cord through both upper and lower eyenuts.
3.2.10 Create a loop of approximate length 300 mm, (Figure 803b). Tie the
free ends of the cord together using a reef knot, with flying ends of
approx. 100 mm long, Make sure there is enough slack in the cord to
allow the container to split and lift apart.
3.2.11 Tidy the flying ends of the cord using a splicing fid, (Figure 803c).
3.2.12 Tape the cord using, white self adhesive tape, 25 mm wide.

CHARGED CYLINDER CAN BECOME A PROJECTILE IF
ACCIDENTALLY DISCHARGED TO THE ATMOSPHERE AND CAN
CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH.
WARNING: DO NOT FORCE THE OPERATING CABLE INTO THE OPERATING
HEAD WHEN ATTEMPTING TO RE-SET IT. USE THE CORRECT
SERVICING PROCEDURE (GIVEN IN THE LIST OF APPLICABLE
PUBLICATIONS). THIS WILL MAKE SURE THAT THE OPERATING
HEAD WILL OPERATE CORRECTLY.
4.1 Install the fully charged gas cylinders into the cylinder pockets. Make sure the
valve outlets point in the direction of the webbing tab, (Figure 804A).

NOTE: The 50-Person liferaft has two cylinders installed in one

pocket. The 100-Person liferaft has four cylinders which
are installed in two pockets.

4.2 Put 238 kg nylon cord through the eyelets of the cylinder pockets and around
the neck of the cylinder. Tie the cord with a reef knot. Put adhesive tape around
the loose ends of the cord.

4.3 If necessary, set the operating heads again as given in the applicable manual,
(please refer to the Associated Publications section).

4.4 Remove the protective cap from each cylinder valve and install each operating

5. Preparation of the painter

5.1 If the painter line has been removed from its sachet, it must be repacked as
follows, (Figure 807):
CAUTION: DO NOT USE ANY OTHER PACKING METHOD.
5.1.1 Take the painter line and mark the centre point between the two
sheathed white portions.
5.1.2 Pass the 5.5 metre plain and sheathed end through the top of the
painter loading machine and feed it into the sachet leaving the sheathed
portion just inside the top tube of the double sachet .
5.1.3 Keeping the 5.5 metre end in position, push the main part of the line
down to the bottom of the sachet and progressively ram the remaining
length into the sachet, using a painter loading machine, until the marked
centre point is just outside the sachet. Carefully detach the loaded
sachet from the machine and reattach it to the empty tube of the sachet.
5.1.4 Push the line from the centre point down the other sachet tube, keeping
it next to the seam which separates the two tubes of the sachet. Again
using the loading machine, progressively ram the remaining plain line
into the sachet until the inner end of the 2.5 metre sheathed portion is
just outside the sachet. Pull the remaining line through the machine and
remove the full sachet assembly.
5.1.5 Pass 3.2 kgf thread through each pair of holes in the end of the sachet
and tie off with reef knots.

up from two 50-person liferafts):

NOTE: When viewed from the cylinder pocket position the LH

liferaft must have the floor label (black) side facing up,
whilst the RH liferaft must have the insulation (silver)
side facing up.
NOTE: When packing a 100-person liferaft (2 x 50-person)
Type A configuration, refer to (Figure 828), for the hose
configuration.
Type B configuration is the reverse.
NOTE: On 100-person configuration the bowsing line (red)
must be tied to the towing bridle loop patch of the
SLAVE liferaft. The painter line must be tied to the
towing bridle and weak link of the MASTER liferaft.

8.2 Put one off the liferafts onto the packing table. Make sure the inflation valves
are aligned with the container. Ensure the joining patch is to the left, close to
the edge of the container.

8.3 Prepare each liferaft as stated in Section E of this chapter.

8.4 Viewed from the container side of the raft, flake fold the right-hand half of the
liferaft as follows, (Figure 827):

8.4.1 Take a line 425 mm from the liferaft centre line (half way between the
inflation hoses) and make the FIRST fold along this line pulling the
area of the liferaft outside it across and over the centre line.
8.4.2 Take a line 425 mm on the left of the liferaft centre line and make the
SECOND fold along this line pulling the area of the liferaft outside it
across and over the centre line.
8.4.3 Make the THIRD fold along the line of the first fold by pulling the area
of the liferaft outside the line of the first fold towards the centre line.
8.4.4 Make the FOURTH fold by folding the left hand side of the liferaft

SURVIVA
SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

1. General

1.1 Storage conditions for liferafts depend on whether they have been
Operationally Packed.

2. Procedure for liferafts that have not been Operationally Packed

2.1 Liferafts that are not operationally packed must be stored in a room that:
2.1.1 Can be maintained at a temperature of 15°C to 21°C.
2.1.2 Is free from direct sunlight.
2.1.3 Has a dry atmosphere.
2.1.4 Is free from corrosive fumes or other harmful contamination.

2.2 Remove components that are easily detachable. Attach transit and recoil caps
to the cylinders. Obey the proper procedures on how to store the gas cylinders.

2.3 Deflate the liferaft until the fabric creases are sharp and well defined (Refer
Chapter 8).
CAUTION: DO NOT STORE MORE THAN ONE LIFERAFT ON TOP OF
ANOTHER.

2.4 Fold the liferaft to a manageable size, enclose it in stiff waterproof paper and
store it above floor level, preferably on slatted shelving to permit air circulation.
It is usually convenient to store a 50 person liferaft on a pallet to enable
transport and storage using fork-lift trucks.

2.5 Tie a label to the liferaft recording the following:

2.5.1 Liferaft Type, Mark and Serial number.
2.5.2 Date of last inflation test.
2.5.3 Date of last service.

2.6 Store the liferaft accessories, except the gas cylinders, with the liferaft.

2.7 Attach dust caps to the delivery hoses. If caps for the hoses are temporarily not
available, use adhesive tape to keep dirt out of the hoses.

SURVIVA
SOLAS STYLE REVERSIBLE LIFERAFT

3. Storage limiting period

3.1 Following a service, the storage limiting period for the liferaft is 12 months,
provided that the storage conditions comply with approved standards (section
2) and meet with the concurrence of the approval authority of the country
concerned. At the end of that period the liferaft must be:
3.1.1 before further storage: unfolded and inspected .
3.1.2 prior to being operationally packed for installation on vessel stowages:
serviced and tested.

3.2 Liferafts not operationally packed and placed in store (for more than 30 days)
must be re-tested before being operationally packed and installed on a vessel
(Chapter 5).

3.3 If a liferaft is operationally packed in a container, it can operate in a wide range

of temperature and humidity, equivalent to those found in service worldwide.
In addition, the container is sufficiently waterproof to protect the Liferaft from
rain or sea. Always make sure the drainage apertures in the bottom of the
container point straight down; make sure they are not blocked by dirt. Although
containers are waterproof, do not deliberately make containers wet;
3.3.1 Do not direct water from hoses at containers.
3.3.2 Do not leave containers in flooded places.

3.4 All lines which go through the container to the liferaft must have protective
sheaths at their outer ends. These sheaths will prevent water from being
conducted into the container. If a line has been pulled from the container
to expose a part of the line which is not covered by a sheath, call a Service
Station to rectify the packing as soon as possible.

3.5 Do not roll a container when it is necessary to move it.

3.6 Operationally packed liferafts are approved for use on board ship for at least
twelve months. National Authorities may grant extensions to the original
operational period. At the end of a period of operational use, Survitec Group
recommend that all liferafts should immediately be opened for inspection
and service. Any contaminants which may have entered the container will be
removed before they cause more damage.

4. Storage of Power units

4.1 The built-in power source is a lithium-sulphur dioxide balanced cell. The
component chemicals of the cell become neutralised after the cell is fully
discharged. Obey these guidelines:
4.1.1 Store power units at temperatures less than 65°C.
4.1.2 For storage, the units must be isolated from materials which are
flammable. Subject to satisfactory condition on receipt, they may remain
in their original transit containers.
4.1.3 If a unit is damaged, or suspected to be damaged, refer to Chapter 6 for
the necessary actions.
WARNING: THE UNITS ARE NOT A FIRE RISK, BUT THEY COULD CAUSE A
HEALTH RISK IF INVOLVED IN A FIRE. DISPOSAL OF DAMAGED
UNITS SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH LOCAL REGULATIONS.

1. General

1.1 The Illustrated Parts List (I.P.L.) has been prepared for the sole purpose of
identifying and/or ordering replacement parts only, it should not be used for any
other purpose.

2. Introduction

2.1 Illustrations

2.1.1 A view of each assembly, exploded as necessary, to show the

component parts thereof is provided. Each illustration is assigned a
figure number. All illustrated parts are assigned item numbers which
correspond to the item numbers on the parts list page(s).
2.1.2 When it is not possible to illustrate on the basic illustration all variants
of an assembly, additional illustrations will be provided. The additional
illustrations will bear the same figure number as the basic illustration,
but will be suffixed by a letter, taken in alpha sequence, A through
Z (except I and O). When additional illustrations are used it will be
indicated in the ‘FIG-ITEM’ column of the parts list.

2.2 Item numbering

2.2.1 In each illustration the items are numbered from 1 and, as a general
rule, continue in increments of 5, e.g. 5, 10, 15 etc., to enable new items
to be inserted into the sequence without the necessity for the complete
renumbering of subsequent items.
2.2.2 All item numbers will be basic numbers (i.e. 5, 10 etc.), however,
should variants and/or alternatives to the basic part be required, they
will be shown as alpha numbers (i.e. 10A, 10B, 10C, etc.) using alpha
sequence variants excepting I and O.

2.3 Non-Illustrated Items

2.3.1 Some item numbers in the parts list are preceded by a hyphen (-),
e.g. - 30. This indicates that this item number will not be found on the
illustration, either because it is not policy to illustrate such an item, e.g.
breaking thread, or, because the item is not illustrated in the form in
which it is listed (i.e. the particular item may be listed as an assembly,
but illustrated ‘exploded’, in order to show the component parts that
may be procurable.

2.4 Part number

2.4.1 The code quoted in this column is the ‘part number’ assigned for the
particular item:
2.4.2 Survitec Group parts are recognised as being (usually) eight-
digit, numeric-only codes; Beaufort Air-Sea Equipment parts are
alphanumeric codes of various lengths.

2.5 Nomenclature

2.5.1 A brief description of the item is included, this includes a descriptive

noun plus any additional descriptive words which help in the
identification of the item. Extra useful information, such as dimensions,
materials etc. may also be included.

2.6 Effectivity code column

2.6.1 This code shows which variant of the product uses that particular item
or sub-assembly. If an item is applicable to all variants the EFF CODE
column (on the parts list page) will be left blank.

2.7 Quantity (QTY) column

2.7.1 In this column ‘RF’ indicates that an item is ‘Reference Only’ at this
location. In other words, it is already listed for spares purposes in
another illustration as part of another assembly or sub- assembly.
2.7.2 ‘AR’ means, ‘As Required’. It is usually applied to items such as
cordage, where quantity requirements may vary from assembly to
assembly.
2.7.3 The number quoted in this column against each item is the quantity
of that item required per assembly, per sub-assembly or per sub-sub-
assembly as applicable.

2.8 Standard Parts

2.8.1 Items in normal print may be regarded as standard. Items in bold, italics
may be subject to substitution to satisfy the requirements of authorities
other than the United Kingdom MCA. Reference should be made to the
relevant appendix.
