This week I took over the math portion of the day. I was ready to take it over. Monday, we did a
preassessment/report card shape assessment. I will use this as a starting poi tot test growth when it is
over. There is not much to the unit, we talk about the different attributes of shapes and compare them.
We work on composing shapes made with other shapes. For example, a hexagon can be made up of 6
triangles. This is a short unit so we will be moving to talk about 3D shapes next and then after this unit is
over move back to Unit 4: Subtracting within 20. This week I also subbed for my teacher o Tuesday. She
had a required conference to attend in Sioux Falls. This meant that nothing was different but that fact
that my CE wouldn’t come in a check how I was doing throughout the day. I added science to teach
about teaching it because I find myself struggle a bit more with math. But now I found myself learning a
whole new way to do math than when I was a child in school. I liked now taking over most of the day.
What I have learned is that teaching is more exhausting than I thought. I had a picture of what I thought
it was in my head, it hasn’t really been what I had pictured. While I still like what I am doing I think the
brain power it takes to do this is something that I will have to get used to. I think some stress will be
taken away when I am fully in charge and able to not rely on my CE to help plan and go over everything.
I can try more things in my style of teaching and see what works and what didn’t work so well. I am
excited to take over fully in the coming weeks to see what happens.
