USES OF FIRST CONDITIONAL
1. We use the first conditional to talk about possible or probable future events and its likely result.
Unless we do something to reduce the waste, in 2050 there could be more plastic in the ocean.
3. The IF clause can come first or second in the sentence. The meaning is the same. We don´t use
commas.
A.- Use the First Conditional structure to complete the following sentences.
1 It will bring (bring) good luck if you see (see) more than one butterfly.
2 If you open (open) an umbrella inside the house, it will bring (bring) bad luck.
3 If you find (find) a spider in your house, someone will visit (visit) you soon.
4 If you say (say) goodbye to a friend on a bridge, you will never see (never see) each other again.
5 You won´t (not get) unwelcome visitors if you put (put) a brush behind the front door.
6 If fishermen don't put back (not put back) the first fish they catch each morning, they won't catch
(not catch) many fish that day.

B.- Complete the First Conditionals with IF or UNLESS.
3 It´s raining. We won´t play football unless the weather gets better.
5 I hate soap operas. I´ll watch TV with you if you turn to another channel.
7 It´s unlucky to spill salt, but if you throw some over your left shoulder, you won´t have bad luck.
8 You´ll have bad luck unless you throw some of the salt over your left shoulder.
C.- First Conditional Exercise Put the verb into the correct first conditional form.
3. If we don't see (not / see) each other tomorrow, we will see (see) each other next week.
7. If the weather doesn't improve (not / improve), we won't have (not / have) a picnic.
10. If you don't want (not / want) to go out, I will cook (cook) dinner at home.
12. They will go (go) to the party if they are (be) invited.
13. She will stay (stay) in London if she gets (get) a job.
14. He won't get (not / get) a better job if he doesn't pass (not / pass) that exam.
15. I will buy (buy) a new dress if I have (have) enough money.
16. She will cook (cook) dinner if you go (go) to the supermarket.

20. I won't go (not / go) if you don't come (not / come) with me.
D.- Complete the sentences below in the First Conditional using the prompts to help you. Use the
2nd person singular.

If you do Tai Chi, you will be more relaxed.
2 drive slower/passengers feel safer
If you drive slower, the passengers will feel safer.
3 suck cough sweet/sore throat get better
If you suck cough sweet, the sore throat will get better.
4 eat too late/not sleep
If you eat too late, you won't sleep.
5 not lift heavy items properly/hurt back
If you don't lift heavy items properly, you will hurt your back.
6 drink milk/stomachache go
If you drink milf, your stomachache will go.
7 take vitamins/have more energy
If you take vitamins, you will have more energy.
8 drink eight glasses of water a day/ skin be sparkling
if you drink eight glasses of water a day, your skin will be sparkling.
E.- Complete the sentences below by making First Conditional statements. Use your imagination!
