1.0 INTRODUCTION

Due to the current outbreak Covid-19 in Malaysia, many people and organizations are affected by
this situation. Since infected people in Malaysia keep doing numbers, a second total lockdown is
carried out and even now the period has been extended. As a result, most of students study in
online platform and there are several of research study found a statistic of student stressed are
increasing drastically than before. Unconsciously, the Covid-19 pandemic has changed a student’s
life. That implies students are encountering huge degrees of persistent pressure, and that they feel
their degrees of stress exceed their capacity to adapt successfully.

Stress is one of the things that we face in daily life. It is a part of our daily routine that we
have to deal with. Consequently, it is a sign to prepare us to adapt to hostile environmental
conditions. We have a perception that stress is a negative thought and it will give a detrimental
impact in our lives and we will tend to eliminate those thoughts

Despite this, stress may be beneficial for us and some people found that being under stress
did actually motivate them to work on certain tasks productively. Instead, it depends on how an
individual perceives and approach to manage stress. A person can be so stressed, too overwhelmed
and cannot control his actions if he sees the stress in a negative way whereas if the person is keen
and views the situation in a positive way.

1
2.0 STRESS LEVEL

We can identify our stress level by knowing if our stress level is high or low. Stress takes its toll
on the human body. There are three levels of stress: low, medium and high. All stress levels have
an impact on our body, even low stress levels can have a detrimental effect.

By doing stress indicators on the internet, I do know that my stress level is medium stress,
26-41. It is good on behalf of me to know my level of stress. As a result, I will acknowledge what's
the source of my stress. It is quite okay for me however I still ought to handle my stress well
because if I work under the pressure each time, it will lead me to a high level of stress which is not
good for me. Moreover, it will cause serious mental issues and I wish to require a physiologist to
take care of my stress if I do not take preventive actions from now. If the indicator shows that we
have high levels of stress, we need professional help to reduce our risk of serious mental illnesses
such as depression.

2
3.0 STRESSOR

A stressor is a chemical or biological agent, environmental condition, external stimulus or an event

seen as causing stress to an organism. Psychologically speaking, a stressor can be events or
environments that individuals might consider demanding and challenging. Psychological signs
such as anxiety, emotional signs such as frustration, and physical signs such as high blood pressure
can be identified by looking at signs of behavior such as poor. As I am a student, no doubt that I
also experienced a lot of stress especially during this current situation. There are several causes of
stress for students.

One of the causes of stress is students having poor time management. As we know, it is
important for us, especially for students, to have good time management. However, we know that
there is a lot of work to be submitted and mostly students tend to stay up late to finish all of their
assessments. This situation leads to poor time management when students need to cut their sleeping
time and put it to the bottom of their list of priorities. Actually this is not good because it will affect
our focus in class. The same goes for me, always staying up late at night to settle all my
assignments and not have enough sleep.

Assignment or work overload tend to be one of the causes of stress among students.
Assignment load often led to health problems and sleep deprivation. Especially due to the current
situation, we can see that most of the students spend too much time on their laptop doing their
assignment since all the material and work have been given by lecturers through online. They
spend more time on their work until they do not have time to meet their friends or do some physical
activity with family.

Last but not least, lack of motivation also can be a cause of stress. Since there are no face-
to-face classes, students just stay at home and join online classes. It will lead students to lose their
focus on studies. A lack of support from parents or teachers also can be classified as the cause for
students to be stressed. For some students, by studying with friends, they will gain more spirit and
pride. They can have a group of people where this is only the platform where they can talk about
what they are going through.

3
4.0 APPROACHES STUDENT TO MANAGE STRESS

The stress is hard to get away from because the stress also helps us to achieve our goals and it will
be the motivation for us to keep moving forward. If we are living with high levels of stress, we are
actually putting our entire well-being at risk. So it is important for us to manage stress, more
important, effectively, so it helps us to break the stress we have on our life. However, there are
lots of ways to manage stress among students.

Firstly, the way to manage stress is to have good time management. Having good time
management skills doesn’t mean that you pull all-nighters to meet a deadline. It means that we
manage our time effectively and space out our work while keeping our regular sleeping routine.
As a student, we should manage our time by having a timetable. For example, we can plan our
study wisely by having a good timetable. By having that, we can cover all the assignments before
the deadlines.

Next is to take a short break outside. These activities can be done at home. When we feel
tired doing an assignment, we should take a short break by doing some physical activities to release
our stress. For example, we can do some exercise for 5 to 10 minutes walking or yoga at home in
the open air. This is good actually because we can take a deep breath while walking and clear our
mind by looking at nature and beautiful scenery.

Other than that, seek out social support. As a student, sometimes we might feel demotivated
because there is a lot of work to do. This situation can be handled in a good way by taking the
approach of talking to someone. For me, we should talk to someone or seek some advice to feel
better. For example, talking to family and friends about it made me realize that I am not the only
one struggling but everyone was forced to deal with online classes as it is not easy for anyone.

4
5.0 BEHAVIORAL AND EMOTIONAL EFFECT OF STRESS

Stress symptoms are also affecting your health, even though you may not realize it. One of the
difficulties with stress is that individuals experience stress in several ways. This contributes to
stress manifesting itself differently. If the stress is long-lasting, you will notice your sleep and
memory are affected, your uptake habits change, or you feel less inclined to exercise. Stress can
have a big impact on all aspects of our life including behaviors and emotions.

Some people experience personality changes in response to stress hormones, which are part
of their internal environment. If we do not find effective ways to relieve stress, it can lead to
changes in mood and personality. An individual who is under frequent stress or has experienced a
traumatic event, we may notice personality changes such as withdrawal from friends and family,
lack of interest in activities that used to be enjoyable, impulsive behavior, decreased productivity
at school or work, loss of interest in appearance and self-care, difficulty communicating and others.

As for the emotional effect of stress, there are many emotional effects of stress that can
leave us to feel like we are experiencing abrupt changes in mood. Both social and physical stressors
can have a big impact on emotional well-being and mood. With the many emotional signs of stress,
it is easy to see the influence stress can have on your overall mood. This also leads to low self-
esteem as we feel that we do not deserve anything in this life. This emotional effect can lead to
health problems such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and others.

5
6.0 RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION

In conclusion, stress has advantages and disadvantages. If the person tends to handle their stress
effectively, this can provide a lot of advantages not only for them but also to the community.
However, too much stress can cause negative stress. It can leave us in a permanent stage of fight
and flight, leaving us overwhelmed or unable to cope. In the long term, this can affect our physical
and mental health.

I recommend that, if we have any problems, we should share with family members or
friends to seek advice. Do not let the surrounding events and situations affect us too much because
it is not good for our mental and physical health. As a student, we should control our stress to
ensure it does not affect our studies. Stress and anger are sometimes very hard to overcome and
defeat, but there are ways that we can handle and manage it wisely.
