After learning of the Danes’ trouble, young Beowulf, a prince of the Geats in what is now
southern Sweden, arrives with a small band of retainers and offers to rid Heorot of its monster.
Hrothgar is astonished at the little-known hero’s daring but welcomes him. After an evening of
feasting, much courtesy, and some discourtesy—at one point, one of Hrothgar’s men insults
Beowulf—the king retires, leaving Beowulf in charge. During the night, Grendel comes from the
moors, rips open the heavy doors, and devours one of the sleeping Geats. He then grapples with
Beowulf, who refuses to use a weapon. Beowulf grips one of Grendel’s hands with such force
that the monster finally wrenches himself free only when his arm is torn off at the shoulder.
Mortally wounded, Grendel returns to his swamp and dies. Beowulf then displays the monster’s
arm in Heorot for all to see.

The things I like about Beowulf are is epic language, and how dramatic it is. Its story is great
too, but it follows the cliche archtype of hero fights monster, hero saves the day, and a happy
ending ensues. Except that Beowulf dies but a statue is erected in his honor, and his men mourn
their king's passing. His treasure is buried under his statue, while his ashes are sealed inside it.
Beowulf follows the archtype and then twists it at the

What I dislike about Beowulf is the general archtype itself, even though it changes at the
end. I feel that Beowulf could have been more original in its story by backing Beowulf into a
corner, and having him come out victorious somehow. The battle with Grendel's mother could
have gone that way instead of him overpowering her as he did with Grendel. Also, I feel that the
epic over-glorified Beowulf and his strength. It felt like he was the trump card to the story, which
he was until the end, when Wiglaf helped out. Plus, I felt that Beowulf had little to no character
development.

My favorite part of Beowulf so far would be the fight between Beowulf and Grendel's
mother. It's definitely also my favorite scene of Beowulf. This time the fight gets more intense as
Grendel's mother not only bringing out a mass of sea-monsters, but also fighting with extreme
resentment of losing her son. Before i started to read this part, i thought Beowulf is going to
defeat her easily like what he did to Grendel. While the tougher flight makes the part more
interesting to me. Since the sword Unferth lends him is not quite working on Grendel's mom, for
a second Beowulf has no way to deal with the situation. But he soon finds the solution by using
the weapon he found on the wall to defeat her. Throughout this whole fight, i can really see the
heroic side of Beowulf, that he could calm himself at his ease and release his whole fierce with
his power.
