My portfolioPersonal beliefs about being an early childhood (EC) educator (202

‘Asa future educator, | would like to go to university after graduating from polytechnic to get a degree in
early childhood education after 3 years. In order to achieve it, determination and perseverance is
needed even though some modules can be difficult. As someone who is passionate in this field, strongly believe in trying to nurture our younger ones. During centre attachment, | value the feedback
given by my mentors and peers so | can work on it and improve myself holistically as a potential
educator. Oftentimes, | am afraid of what I can contribute for society as a whole which is why my recent
project allowed me to volunteer for children from less fortunate backgrounds and gave me an eye-
opening experience. This showed me a different perspective of the world which can be incorporated
when I educate the next generation of children as I got to be empathetic and give my utmost best when
it comes to giving them equal opportunities as children with a stable financial background. | hope to get
more volunteering opportunities so that | get to have an insight of how different children of different
backgrounds will equip me with the knowledge to handle them.
Discovery from the time he/she started with the Diploma course until
now (212 words)
When | started to do work with my classmates, | had to work in groups with my classmates which | was
not close to which is hard since we are not sure of each other's strengths and weaknesses and needed
time to warm up. After working together for some time, | understood the importance of teamwork and
the process behind knowing my classmates when it comes to group work which are the stages of Group
Formation and development (Verderber, Selinow, & Verderber, 2017). | was hit with reality when | saw
the content in my various modules and the different routines that | have to do in the preschool centre.
From showering, diaper change and feeding, each step has to be done meticulously while keeping an
eye on the infant. | learn how to apply my theories in my various modules to good use and understand
the difficulties an early childhood educator face. Dealing with a class of approximately twenty children is
not a simple job which makes me realise that becoming an early educator needs a lot of patience and
determination which is something I learn as well. From teaching children, to handling concerned parents
to classroom management, it takes a lot of courage and perseverance to take up such a job.Professional Growth: a developmental plan for his/her personal and
professional growth in relation to ECDA’s Grow Me Professional
Development Resource and Colouring Book and Katz’s stages of
professional development for early childhood educators (207 words)
Goals:
‘As someone who aspires to be an early childhood educator, | want to improve myself as a better person
50 | can be a more professional educator in this field in the future. Not only that, but | would also like to
0 to university to pursue further studies in this sector in the next 3 years.
Reality:
| have always been strong in doing PowerPoint and Microsoft documents but | am weak in
Understanding certain points in my various modules. According to Scales (2008), | am in the unconscious
incompetence stage in the Conscious Competence Model as | am unsure of what I know and understand.
Options:
| can upskill myself by doing peer sharing and observation to let myself as well as others know their
strengths and weaknesses. Not only that, but | can also do classroom training such as courses and
‘workshops to upskill myself in this field (Early Childhood Development Agency, n.d.)
Kate's:
| feel that | am unprepared and uncertain whether what | am doing is correct or wrong. According to
Katz (1972) stages of professional development for early childhood educators, this is part of the survival
stage which can be overcome through classroom training and peer sharing and observation which gives
me valuable feedback to improve myself.
In your Reflections on Learning based on ONE artifact (include
photographs), explain why you have chosen this item in relation to yourlearning and growth in becoming an early childhood educator. (291
words)
This is an artifact from my centre attachment in semester 1 where | got to have first-hand experiences
‘on the job scope of an early childhood educator. It made me realise how different my views of being an
early childhood educator are as | remember how overwhelmed | was by the number of children I had to
handle and my perspective of how taking care of children is such an easy task has changed. | was given
valuable insights by my class form teacher on how to doa lesson plan which gave me some tips on how
to prepare for a lesson that is age and developmentally appropriate. | also learnt that a lesson plan can
cover different domains such as motor skills and language skills which are covered in the artifact above.
Using the knowledge we have learnt from the various modules, | was able to see my theories come to
life and apply my knowledge on the children to assist with their development and growth. With the
different routines and transitions, | slowly got familiarised with them and in the future, I can use these
‘a5 an example of how a day in a preschool looks like. With my 2 weeks experience there, | was able to
interact with teachers, children and parents which enhanced my communication skills. This has changed
my perspective towards the early childhood field and made me understand how an early childhood
‘educator needs to have compassion and patience. Through the feedback given in my practicum, | was
able to reflect so that | can develop holistically as someone going into this field. According to Sellars
(2013), | am able to do technical reflection which isto effectively and efficiently achieve established
goals.References
