The conditions for the occurrence of


hydrodynamic lubrication between two surfaces:
 Relative movement with (sufficient velocity to drag lubricant);
 Inclined surfaces at certain angle to each other (to generate
pressure in the lubricant),
Viscosity

The term bearing refers to contacting


surfaces through which a load is transmitted.
The bearing types can be broadly split into:
(1)- Sliding bearings (Thrust & Journal bearing Ball)
(2)- Rolling element bearings (Roller and Needle
bearings)

Assumptions
1. The two nonparallel surfaces are separated by
a fluid film of constant viscosity, (=C)
2. One of these surfaces moves with a velocity (ub)
while the other is stationary (ua=0) .
3. The length of the bearing (l) is parallel to the
sliding direction and the width (B) is normal to
the sliding direction
4. The sliding direction is made to drag the
lubricant into the wedge to produce HD
pressure,

12). A fixed-plane-inclined-pad thrust bearing of length
100mm, and width 500mm, with a minimum film
thickness of 50µm, operates at a sliding velocity of 1
m/sec with a mineral oil of absolute viscosity of 30 cP.
Film thickness ratio is adjusted to produce the maximum
load capacity. The mass density and specific heat of the
oil are 880 kg/m3 and 1.88 J/g K, respectively, calculate:
(a)- The maximum pressure, (b)- The location of the
maximum pressure, (c)- The normal load capacity, (d)- The
film stiffness, (e)- The volumetric flow rate, (f)- The shear
force experienced by the sliding surface, (g)- The friction
coefficient, (h)- The power loss, and (i)- The average

 Using The Design Charts
9) A journal bearing of a 120mm diameter and 60 mm long has a diametral
clearance of 0.40 mm. The journal rotates at 3000rpm and is lubricated
with SAE 20 oil at an average temperature of 70oC.
(a)- By using Petroff`s equation, estimate the power loss (watt) and the
friction torque (Tf).
(b)- By using the charts rather than Petroff`s equation, determine the
minimum oil film thickness, ho, for
(i) A bearing load of 500 N. (ii) A bearing load of 5000N

10) An automobile engine has five main bearings, each 2.5 in. in diameter
and 1 in. long. The diametral clearance is 0.0015 in.
(a)- By using Petroff`s equation, estimate the power loss per bearing at
3600 rpm if SAE 30 oil is used, with an average oil film temperature of
180oF.
(b)- By using the charts rather than Petroff`s equation, determine the
minimum oil film thickness, ho, for a bearing load of 100 lb per bearing.
