PART A: READING COMPREHENSION (15 MARKS)
Read the passage below and answer all the questions that follow.

Comprehending The Cancel Culture

Cancel culture is a cultural boycott that aims to eliminate status or

prestige from individuals deemed by the public to have done or said
something that is considered offensive. It started as a movement to
address bad behaviours demonstrated by individuals such as
celebrities or social media influencers. To
be cancelled means that a group stops supporting individuals, places 5
or things based on perceived or actual wrongdoing. This movement
has quickly gained a negative connotation in recent years and is now
termed as cancel culture.
Il The cancel culture can be traced back a decade ago as reported
by The New
York Times. But, the recent rise of numerous social media
platforms has
popularised this culture which led to an aggressive form of social 10
justice. The act of cancelling someone ranges from simply calling
someone out to recklessly hunting these individuals online as a form
of vigilante justice. Cancelling is not only viewed as a method of
withdrawing support from the cancelled individuals, but also
shaming them online on social media platforms.

Ill This online shaming makes the cancelled individuals feel like the 15
whole world is attacking them. Kimberley Wilson, a psychologist and
author of 'How to Build a Healthy Brain' explained that shame is a
response from the online attack as they feel like they are not
supported. She also emphasised that shame is central
in this culture as it serves as a learning moment for the cancelled

individuals.
Feeling small, humiliated, exposed and unable to look at another 20
person straight
in the eye are several signs of shame that they often experience.
Wilson reiterates that these signs could serve as a primary trigger for
mental health issues as the individuals will feel isolated.
IV The cancel culture creates an awareness to constantly keep 25
individuals' behaviour in check as many fear being shamed publicly.
This fear reduces or removes the intention to engage in socially
perceived wrongdoings. Public shaming can also make individuals
less likely to repeat an offensive behaviour.
As the cancel culture gives a voice to people who feel powerless,
it ensures that
the offences that were made would not be repeated. 30

V
The cancelled individuals are also denied the most basic of human
opportunities which are to apologise and to be forgiven. Cancel
culture encourages people to be quick to cancel as it creates an
environment that does not allow anyone to correct their behaviour or
learn from their mistakes. Yet, mistakes are a part of
what makes people grow and develop. For cancelled 35
individuals, it is not easy to be accepted again into society. A
quick apology by them is viewed as insincere while a slow one
is seen as being issued under pressure.
VI Ultimately, the consequences of being cancelled often outweigh the
actual harm caused by their wrongdoings. Should these cancelled
individuals lose their
reputation, job, or entire livelihood because of one distasteful tweet? 40
Do they
deserve to have their lives torn apart, their homes targeted, and
death threats flooding their inboxes? Social media users have to
be responsible and exercise caution before joining the crowd in
cancelling an individual. It is essential to understand all sides of
a story and acknowledge that people are bound to make
mistakes. All of us deserve second chances, even on the
internet.

Buying Preloved Items

Most people assume that buying new items is always better because they
are usually in good condition. This is not a problem for those who are
lucky enough to maintain a steady income throughout the Covid-19
pandemic. The pandemic however has quite surprisingly prompted
not only the less fortunate individuals
to purchase pre-loved items but has also attracted the attention of 5
many collectors and shoppers.

People can hunt for preloved items in many places. These include
flea markets, 'bundle' outlets, thrift shops, bazaars, and car boot
sales. While these places cannot operate under the Movement
Control Order (MCO), sellers of preloved
items are still reaping the benefits of the rise in demand for 10
used goods. The easy accessibility of online shopping allows
people to log on to the local buyand-sell platforms such as
Carousell, Lelong, and eBay Malaysia to search for bargains.
People can also turn to social media to search for groups or
businesses that sell preloved items. Currently, there are also
many online
streaming platforms via Shopee, Facebook and Instagram for 15
consumers to buy preloved items. Thus, with only a few clicks,
anyone can easily purchase second-hand goods.

Ill Given the country's economic climate today, consumers are constantly
finding other alternatives to stretch their ringgit further. With the same
amount of
money spent on a new item, consumers can purchase more things 20
at a lower price at preloved stores. Depending on the items, prices
of used items could be 30% to 50% lower than what they retail for
new. Psychologically, when people buy things at a fraction of the
cost, they will feel that they are getting their money's worth. Baby
items like infant wear, strollers, car seats, toys, and
playpens are some of the sought-after items at preloved shops. 25
Consumers
opt for preloved items as they think it is wasteful to spend a lot of money on a

CONFIDENTIAL 10 LG/JULY 2022/ELC151/150 (SET 2)
new item that will only be used for a short period before
discarding it. It is wiser to spend the extra cash on other
necessities.

IVPeople are beginning to realise that not all preloved items are old or unwanted.
Instead, they are of high quality. Some items are up for sale because 30
the products are discontinued models. Perhaps, the person or
organisation selling them has an excess of these things or has gone
out of business. Some of these items are brand-new items which are
still in their original packaging such as toys, household appliances,
or electrical appliances. Other than that, some
clothing items sold as preloved items are still in mint condition as they 35
are factory overruns or products that have failed the factory quality test.

Buying preloved items has become somewhat trendy as more

people warm up to the idea that there are gems to be discovered
among preloved goods. In other words, people can also find quality
items that are one-of-a-kind, unique,
and vintage. However, bargain hunting is not for everyone. As 40
explained by Mohd Shafeq, a businessman from Shah Alam,
Selangor, it takes time and not all items are in perfect condition. So,
it is up to consumers to check them thoroughly and find something
that suits their liking and budget. Consumers can find a range of
treasures like antique items, fumiture, kitchenware,
collectible toys and memorabilia. 45
VI
Moreover, buying preloved items is a form of recycling and
upcycling, or transforming used items into something completely
different. Jansz, an administrator at a telecommunications company
and a mother-of-three, is drawn to preloved products as they offer
room for bargain, as some items need
not be used for their intended purposes. For example, plates, 50
saucers, and serving platters are used for daily dining and special
occasions. Some saucers are also transformed into flowerpot
holders or containers for jewellery pieces like rings and earrings.
Hence, buying preloved products will not only help the
environment, but also allow people to explore their creativity.

Vil In short, buying used instead of new items is no longer a stigma or 55

something
that causes embarrassment. It extends far beyond great savings and

interesting finds. Choosing preloved items also contributes to

environmental sustainability as it reduces pollution and preserves
vital resources that go into making new goods. Happy hunting!
