Pen-portraits of invited speakers

Prof. Dr. Rattan Lal

Rattan Lal, Ph.D., is a Distinguished University Professor of Soil


Science and Director of the CFAES Rattan Lal Center for
Carbon Management and Sequestration at The Ohio State
University, USA. He received his Ph.D. from the Ohio State
University, Columbus, Ohio (1968). He served as Sr. Research
Fellow with the University of Sydney, Australia (1968-69), Soil
Physicist at IITA, Ibadan, Nigeria (1970-87), and Professor of
Soil Science at OSU (1987 to date).

He has authored/ co-authored over 1000 refereed journal


articles and more than 550 book chapters, has written and
edited/co-edited more than 100 books. He has received an
Honoris Causa degree from nine universities throughout Europe, USA and Asia; the Medal of Honor
from UIMP, Santander, Spain (2018); the Distinguished Service Medal of IUSS (2018); and is fellow
of the five professional societies. Dr. Lal has mentored 115 graduate students and 182 visiting
scholars from around the world. He was President of the World Association of Soil and Water
Conservation (1987-1990), International Soil and Tillage Research Organization (1988-1991), Soil
Science Society of America (2006-2008), and the International Union of Soil Sciences (2017-2018).
He is Chair in Soil Science and Goodwill Ambassador for Sustainability Issues for the Inter-American
Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), and member of the 2021 United Nations Food
Security Summit Science Committee and Action Tracks 1 & 3. Dr. Lal is laureate of the GCHERA
World Agriculture Prize (2018), Glinka World Soil Prize (2018), Japan Prize (2019), U.S. Awasthi
IFFCO Prize (2019), Arrell Global Food Innovation Award (2020), World Food Prize (2020), and
India’s Padma Shri Award (2021).

Prof. Dr. Mark Sutton

Dr. Mark Sutton is professor at UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology,


UK. Since 1986, the work of Prof. Sutton has focused primarily on
the emission, behavior and fate of ammonia in the atmosphere. Prof.
Sutton has led a series of key national and international collaborative
projects on ammonia. In recent years, Prof. Sutton has focused on
developing the links between ammonia and other nitrogen
compounds in the environment.

Pof. Sutton is chair of the International Nitrogen Initiative (INI), a joint


project of the IGBP and SCOPE and South Asia Nitrogen Hub
(SANH) and is co-chair of the Task Force on Reactive Nitrogen (TFRN), a body of the UN-ECE
Geneva Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution. Prof. Sutton has authored and co-
authored more than 1200 research publication and his citations, on google scholar, exceed 40,000
with an H-index of 92.

Prof. Dr. Yakov Kuzyakov

Prof. Dr. Yakov Kuzyakov is a soil scientist and ecologist, professor and
the head of the department of Soil Science of Temperate Ecosystems and
the department of Agricultural Soil Science at the University of Göttingen,
Germany. Prof. Kuzyakov is one of the most frequently cited soil scientists
worldwide. He specialises in soil ecology and soil biogeochemistry,
rhizosphere processes, agriculture, land use and land degradation,
agroecology, C and N cycles, in application of radioactive and stable
isotope labelling approaches in soil science.

Prof. Kuzyakov has authored and co-authored more than 1200


research publication and his citations, on google scholar, exceed
49000 with an H-index of 102. He has lead more that 30 research
projects funded from different international agencies like DFG (German Research Foundation),
BMBF, EU, DAAD, AvH, NSFC etc. He is part of editorial boards of my prestigious impact factor
journals.

Dr. Cornelia Rumpel

Dr. Cornelia Rumpel is a soil biogeochemist working for the French


National Research Center (CNRS) at the Institute of Ecology and
Environment in Paris, France. Her work is concerned with the dynamics
of organic matter at the molecular scale and the biogeochemical cycling
of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in natural and managed ecosystems.

She is dealing with temperate and tropical environments and


contributed to the change of several paradigms. Since a few years
her work focuses on the development of innovative agroecological
strategies to increase soil carbon sequestration. She supervised 18 PhD students to successful
completion of their thesis and has published more than 200 papers in international peer reviewed
journals. She is also working at the science policy interphase to communicate the value of soil
carbon sequestration as response to global challenges. In 2016 and 2017, she was listed as a highly
cited researchers in the field of agronomy. She is engaged in the international 4 per 1000 initiative
for climate change as the chair of the scientific and technical committee.

Dr. Muhammad Farooq

Dr. Muhammad Farooq is Head of department of Plant Sciences at the


Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Oman. He is working on
conservation agriculture for sustainable crop production. Dr. Farooq is
recipient of ‘Best Young Research Scholar Award’ from the Higher
Education Commission of Pakistan for the years 2013-15. He was
honored with the COMSTECH Award for Excellence in Research
(2016) by Organization of Islamic Conference, Gold Medal (2017) by
Pakistan Academy of Sciences, the best University Teacher Award
(2018) by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. He was also named the ‘Highly Cited
Researcher’ by the Clarivate/Web of Sciences for the years 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Dr. Farooq has edited and co-edited 35 books and authored and co-authored more than 400
research articles and 50 book chapters. His citations, on google scholar, exceed 35,000 with an H-
index of 89.

Prof. Dr. Nanthi Bolan

Dr. Nanthi Bolan is professor in School of Agriculture and Environment, The


University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia. He has served as the
Dean of Graduate Studies of UWA and as the leader of the Cooperative
Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the
Environment (CRC CARE) Programme on Prevention Technologies. His
teaching and research interests include agronomic value of manures,
fertilisers and soil amendments, soil acidification, nutrient cycling, pesticide
and metal pollutants interactions in soils, soil remediation and waste and waste water management.

Nanthi has supervised more than 40 postgraduate students, and was awarded the Massey
University Research Medal for excellence in supervision. He has published more than 200 papers
and was awarded the M.L. Leamy Award in recognition of the most meritorious contribution to soil
science. Nanthi is a Fellow of the American Soil Science Society and, and is currently serving as
the Associate Editor of Critical Reviews in Environmental Science and Technology.

Dr. Tanvir Shahzad

Dr. Tanvir Shahzad, a PhD in Ecology & Biogeochemistry, from


AgroParisTech France, is currently working as a Tenured Associate
Professor in the department of Environmental Sciences, GC
University. Briefly, he is working on the mechanisms of soil organic
matter stabilization in arable and natural ecosystems, effects of land
use changes on soil quality and health, and the soil management
practices leading to sustainable soil health and productivity. He has
published in renowned journals of his field like Nature Geoscience,
Global Change Biology, Soil Biology and Biochemistry, and Geoderma. Currently, he is working on
a project where he and his team are focused to convince the rice farming community to not burn the
rice residues, but rather those residues should be returned to the soil as this practice will improve
soil health. For this, they have identified farmers’ field who are already practicing this alternative
management practice and Dr. Tanvir & his team are going to demonstrate the results of these field
surveys indicating substantial improvement in soil health to the farming community at large.

Dr. Majid Mahmood Tahir

Dr. Majid Mahmood Tahir is working as an Associate Professor at


Department of Soil & Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture,
University of Poonch Rawalakot. He is working in this Department
since 2008 when he was appointed as Lecturer. He received his Ph.D.
degree in Soil Science from Federal University of Santa Maria
(UFSM), Brazil in 2016. He was the recipient of CNPq-TWAS Doctoral
Fellowship from The World Academy of Sciences, Trieste, Italy for Ph.
D in Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil (2012–2016). Dr. Tahir
has research interest relating to biotransformation of carbon and
nitrogen in soil, carbon sequestration, soil organic matter dynamics in changing climate. He is also
working on the mapping of soil organic matter of the cropland soil of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. He
has published 35 articles in referred journals and presented in various national and international
conferences. Currently he is working as Chairman, Department of Soil & Environmental Sciences,
Faculty of Agriculture, University of Poonch Rawalakot. Dr. Tahir is the member of Soil Science
Society of Pakistan and is serving as vice-president for Azad Jammu & Kashmir chapter of the
society.

Dr. Muhammad Farooq Qayyum

Dr. Muhammad Farooq Qayyum, Tenured Associate Professor,


Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan, Pakistan received PhD
from Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany in 2012
Currently, his focus areas are remediation of metal
contaminated soils using biochars, and phosphorus nutrition of
crop plants using sewage sludge biochars and composts.

In early 10 years of professional career, Dr. Qayyum has done


tremendous job. Dr. Qayyum has received a research funding
from International Foundation for Science Sweden (worth 5900
USD), and two from Higher Education Commission Pakistan (worth 2.6 million PKR and 8.7 million
PKR). He has authored 6 book chapters and more than 70 peer reviewed research articles.
Moreover, he has received Best Paper Award from the Higher Education Pakistan for two research
articles published in 2017.

Dr. Ghulam Haider

Dr. Ghulam Haider is working as Associate Professor, ASAB NUST


Islamabad. He did his PhD in Biochar as a beneficial soil amendment in
sandy soils: A long-term field and greenhouse study to improve the
mechanistic understanding, from Justus-Liebig-University Giessen,
Germany in 2016.

Dr. Haider’s group focuses on two major challenges faced by world


agriculture, for instance, global climate change and food insecurity. Dr.
Haider has published numerous articles relate to his specialization in high
impact factor journals. Similarly, he has completed innovative national as well as international
research projects regarding greenhouse gases emissions.

Dr. Saeed Ahmad Asad

Dr. Saeed is working as an Associate Professor working at the


Department of Biosciences, COMSATS University Islamabad. He
earned his Doctorate degree in Agricultural and Environmental
Sciences from the University of Nottingham in United Kingdom in 2011.
Since after completing his PhD, he has built his career as an academic
researcher.

During his career, Dr. Asad has executed numerous projects with
Potsdam Institute for climate research (PIK), Germany, International Institute for Sustainable
Development (IISD) Canada, German agency for International Development (GIZ), Germany.
Moreover, he has worked as a consultant for United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and
has authored 3 technical reports for UNDP. He has published 34 peer reviewed research articles, 4
book chapters and 6 popular articles, along with winning multimillion international research grants.

Dr. Muhammad Shahid

Dr. Muhammad Shahid is working as Tenured Associate Proffesor in


COMSATS Vehari-campus. He did his M2R and Ph.D (2006-2010) from
INP-ENSAT, University of Toulouse-France. His PhD thesis was
awarded “Leopold Escande Award-2011” based on originality and quality
of research work by INP-ENSAT, Toulouse-FRANCE. He has been listed
among the "Highly Cited Researchers 2020" by Clarivate, Web of
Science. He is also listed among “Top 2% scientists” in biological
sciences in the world according to the date released by Mendeley 2020.

Dr. Shahid has published 2 textbooks, 21 book chapters and 146 research articles with a cumulative
impact factor > 600 and citations > 13000 (H-index 62 and i-10 index 134). His research
contributions have > 1.36 million reads on ResearchGate. He is also member, PI or Co-PI of 21
research projects sponsored by various national and international funding agencies.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Fahim Khokhar

Prof. Dr Muhammad Fahim Khokhar is working as HoD at Institute


of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, School of Civil and
Environmental Engineering, National University of Sciences and
Technology (IESE, SCEE, NUST) Islamabad, Pakistan. He had his
Doctoral degree from Germany followed by three post doctorates
from Germany and France. He excelled himself in satellite remote
sensing, air quality monitoring an assessment, climate change and
its impacts.

Recently, he has been selected as member of the Pakistan’s


Climate Change Council, Ministry of Climate Change, Govt of
Pakistan. At IESE-NUST, Dr Khokhar is the Director of C-CARGO (Climate Change and
Atmospheric Research Group). Prof. Dr. Fahim is engaged in many national and international
projects related to his field of expertise. He has a commendable research record and was conferred
the SCEE-Best researcher award for year 2020-21. He has published his work in many scientific
journals of international repute such as Nature, Journal of Hazardous material, AMT, Environmental
Pollution, Atmospheric environment etc.

Dr. Wajid Nasim Jatoi

Dr Wajid Nasim Jatoi, have completed PhD in 2010 and 02 Post


Doctorates from Australia and France in 2014 and 2016, respectively.
Currently, serving in Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture &
Environment, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB), Pakistan
since November 21, 2019. Before joining IUB, served as Associate
Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, COMSATS
University Islamabad (Vehari Campus), Pakistan.

Furthermore, he completed 02 International Research Projects (AgMIP & BioSight) in collaboration


with Columbia University, USA and another with collaboration of International Food Policy Research
Institute (IFPRI), USA and CIHEAM-IAMM FRANCE; Currently, another International Climate
Change Campaign Project is in progress in collaboration with OXFAM (International) in Pakistan.
However, five national (funded by HEC and UAF) are already completed producing number of
postgraduate students from these projects. He has published >100 research publications (with >400
Impact Factor) in national and international impact factor journals.

Dr. Ali Raza Gurmani

Dr. Ali Raza Gurmani, Associate Professor in Department of Soil &


Climate Sciences, The University of Haripur. He has19-years
teaching/ research experience in soil-plant nutrition, soil salinity, plant
microbe interaction, and climate change impact on crop plants at
different institutions which includes, The University of Haripur, Hazara
University, McGill University, Canada, National Agricultural Research
Centre, Islamabad, Pakistan and University of Sussex, UK.

He has executed eight research projects funded from different


agencies. He successfully supervised three PhD and twenty master’s
students. He has completed Post Doctorates from McGill University, Canada; and PhD from Quaid-
e-Azam University, Pakistan, and Master in Soil Science with the distinction of Gold Medal from
Gomal University. He published more than eighty research publications with an impact factor of 90.
Dr Gurmani organized seven international and national conferences, symposium and workshops as
Principal organizer at the University of Haripur, Pakistan.

Dr. Derk Bakker

Dr. Derk Bakker is Associate Professor and chairperson of the


Department of Environmental Sciences of FC College. He is originally
from the Netherlands where he obtained a degree in Land and Water
Management. After doing a PhD in Civil Engineering in Australia he
found employment in agricultural research in different parts of Australia
with the longest stint in Western Australia. Six years ago they thought
it was time for a ’sea-change’ and came to Pakistan to contribute to
the teaching in environmental science and to public life. He teaches
courses related to climate, sustainability, conservation and other topics. His research interests are
renewable energy, soil pollution, climate change and whatever else is interesting and worthwhile
investigating.

Dr. Sajid Ali

Dr. Sajid Ali, has acquired PhD in Genetics, Evolution and Population
Biology from Paris-XI University, Paris, France. Dr. Ali has completed
one Post-Doctorate in Population Genetics from Aarhus University,
Denmark, and another from CIRAD-INRA-SupAgro University,
Montpellier in crop and pathogen population genomics. He has
expertise in crop and pathogen population dynamics at spatial and
temporal scale along with in depth knowledge of genetics, breeding
and ecological consequences of resistance genes deployment.

Dr. Ali has earned several research grants from international donors like European Research
Council-EU, CIMMYT-USDA-USA, JIC-UK, ANU, Australia and HEC-Pakistan. The work on crop
improvement contributed to the development of wheat variety “Ghanimat-e-IBGE”, Brassica
varieties “Dalai” and “Rokhana” and Common Bean variety “Himalaya-1”. He has research
publication in internationally reputed journals like PLOS pathogens, Molecular Ecology, Molecular
Ecology Resources, Plant Pathology, Plant Disease, Fungal Genetics and Biology, Phytopathology
and Ecology and Evolution. Dr. Ali has been awarded Research Productivity Award twice (in 2016
and 2017) and Fakhre-Peshawar Award (2019). Dr. Ali has supervised three PhDs and 11 M.Phil
researchers as major supervisor and several PhD and M.Phil researchers as co-supervisor.

Dr. Ahmad Naeem Shahzad

Dr. Ahmad Naeem is associate Professor in Department of


Agronomy, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan. His
research work focuses on the development and adoption of modern
agronomic management practices in the context of food security,
malnutrition, agronomy, plant nutrition, abiotic stress and climate
change.

Dr. Shahzad conducts experiments to optimize fertilizer use


particularly for nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus in order to
increase crop productivity and to reduce environmental pollution. He also studies nutritional budgets
at the farm, region and country level to understand the primary causes of imbalanced fertilizer use.
He has recently established different metrices to elucidate the factors responsible for low crop yields
and poor nitrogen use efficiencies. In the domain of malnutrition, his research concentrates on the
development of pulses particularly chickpea with enhanced iron and zinc contents in grains through
agronomic and breeding biofortification techniques such as use of inorganic and organic fertilizers,
hybridization and marker-assisted selection.

Dr. Sajid Ali

Dr. Sajid Ali is currently working as Assistant Professor at Department of


Agronomy, University of the Punjab, Lahore since 2011. He got his PhD
degree from Justus-Liebig University, Giessen, Germany in 2011. He
started his professional career as Assistant Research Officer at Sugarcane
Research Institute, AARI, Faisalabad from 2003 to 2005. He won
scholarship for higher studies (PhD) and went to Germany for the purpose.
Areas of his research interest include conservation agriculture/tillage and
optimization of polyphenols in neglected plants. Dr. Ali has published around 40 papers in the
journals of international repute and also contributed three book chapters to the field of agriculture.
He has also supervised 3 PhD students and more than10 M. Sc. (Hons.)/M.Phil. students for their
research work and theses write-up. Dr. Ali recently won a research project worth PKR 4.323 Million
from Higher Education Commission, Pakistan under NRPU.
