Global Warming: The green house gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide are
major culprits.
Carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for approximately 100 years, methane lasts about 12
years. Other greenhouse gases last even longer.
CO2 is the gas responsible for keeping the Earth’s climate warm because it absorbs radiation
that would otherwise leave the Earth’s atmosphere and disperse into the upper atmosphere
•About 20% of CO2 emitted in Atmosphere comes from burning gasoline in the engines of the
vehicle
• Methane is obtained from resources such as rice paddies, bovine flatulence, bacteria in bogs
and fossil fuel manufacture
• The main sources of nitrous oxide include nylon and nitric acid production, cars with catalytic
converters, the use of fertilizers in agriculture and the burning of organic matter
Another major cause of global warming is deforestation. Deforestation is to be blamed for
25% of all CO2 release entering the atmosphere
About 63% of fossil fuels are from middle east
By 2040 approximately half of the global energy supply will come from renewables

The most important benefit of renewable energy systems is the decrease of

environmental pollution
In 2005 the distribution of renewable energy in the world was as follows (EIA,2006)
Biomass = 46%
Hydroelectric = 45%
Geothermal = 6%
Wind = 2%
Solar = 1%
The success of alternate fuels in the market place will depend
on numerous factors, including public understanding and consumer
awareness, economics, automobile performance, availability of
fuels, vehicles and distribution and marketing systems, and
changes in technology. NITW
