Biochemistry CHEM 40 (Lecture)
Homework 6
Part A.
1. What does cellular respiration produce?
Cellular respiration is series of chemical reactions that break down glucose to produce ATP
which are used as energy needed to make various reactions throughout our body in order to keep
us alive.
2. Does it need light?
Cellular respiration does not depend on light thus it does not need light in order to work.
3. What does anaerobic mean?
An means without or absence, aerobic involves oxygen thus anaerobic involves an absence of
oxygen.
4. What does aerobic mean?
Aerobic involves a series of oxidation reactions which oxygen is consumed.
5. What is the equation for cellular respiration?
C6H12O6 + 602 → 6CO2 + 6H20 + 36 or 38 ATPs
Part B. What are the 3 stages of cellular respiration?
1. Glycolysis
 It takes place outside of mitochondria in the cytoplasm of cells through anaerobic process
and needs glucose and two ATP molecules, while it used to break glucose into two
pyruvates, creating two ATP molecules, two NADH electron carrier molecules, and then
proceed to the Electron Transport Chain process.
2. Krebs Cycle
 The Krebs Cycle is the next phase, and it takes place in the mitochondria's matrix which
requires oxygen or through aerobic process. 8 NAD+, 2 FADs, 2 Acetyl CoA, a four-
carbon acceptor molecule, are all used in this process. Additionally, two pyruvates are
converted to acetyl CoA, which results in the production of two carbon dioxides. This
cycle then results in the production of six carbon dioxide molecules, eight NADH
molecules, two FADH2 electron molecules, and two ATP molecules, all of which the cell
can use as an energy source.
3. Electron Transport Chain
 The mitochondrion's folds and the inner membrane of mitochondria are where the last
step of cellular respiration takes place involving use of oxygen. In order to make 34 ATP
molecules that can be used in cellular respiration, it uses 10 NADH electron carrier
molecules from glycolysis and the Krebs cycle, as well as 6 oxygen atoms from the
original glucose molecule. It also combines hydrogen ions with electrons and oxygen
atoms to form 6 water molecules.
Part C.
Comparing Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
Photosynthesis Aerobic Respiration
Equation Carbon dioxide (6 CO2) + Water Glucose (C6H12O6) + Oxygen 6

Oxygen (6 O2) + Water 6 (H2O) + Energy
