DEPRESSION IN YOUTH

Depression is very common in this generation, particularly among adolescents. Despite

the fact that depression is a common mental illness, many people are unaware of its
true nature, including its meaning, symptoms, impact on a person's life, and treatment
options. People frequently confuse sadness with depression. When they are sad, they
usually say they are "depressed." Is there a distinction between sadness and depression?
Sadness and depression share some characteristics but are not the same thing. So, how
do we tell the difference between sadness and depression? "Sadness is a natural
human emotion that everyone experiences on occasion," says Johnny Williamson, MD,
medical director at Timberline Knolls. "It is frequently associated with a difficult life event
such as the death of a loved one, a breakup, or other painful event that results in an
unfavorable outcome".Sadness can also be relieved by venting, crying, exercising, or
other methods of emotion release. It eventually fades and then resolves. If your sadness
does not fade or if it lasts for an extended period of time, you should seek help from a
mental health professional because depression is a possibility."

According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a common and

serious medical illness that has a negative impact on how you feel, think, and act.
Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in previously enjoyed
activities. It can cause a variety of emotional and physical issues, as well as a reduction
in a person's ability to function at work and at home. Fortunately, it is also treatable.
Depression symptoms can range from mild to severe. The most common symptoms are
sadness or a depressed mood, difficulty sleeping or sleeping excessively, and suicidal or
suicidal ideation. According to research, depression affects approximately one in every
fifteen adults each year. And one in every six people will experience depression at
some point in their lives. Depression can strike at any age, but it usually appears in the
late teens to mid-20s. Women are more likely than men to suffer from depression.
According to some studies, one-third of women will experience a major depressive
episode in their lifetime.Although women are three times more likely than men to
develop depression, men are five times more likely than women to commit suicide
when depressed. Most people believe that this is because women have a less
appealing social role and their hormones make them more susceptible to depression,
whereas men are more likely to keep their emotions bottled up inside of them due to
their role in society and the fact that they do not have society's permission to express
their feelings openly.

Every human being is susceptible to depression. Depression can affect people of any
age, but teenagers are the most commonly reported to be affected by the disease.
Peer pressure and changes in their lives, such as puberty, are most likely to blame. As
we grow older, we undergo physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual transformations.
When a person enters adolescence or puberty, there are visible changes, particularly in
their physical appearance. Some teenagers are completely dissatisfied with their
physical appearance. This can lead to a lack of confidence in their abilities and low
self-esteem. Eventually, this may be a contributing factor to adolescent depression.
