Statement of purpose

Since my childhood, I have always dreamed for a professional that will allow me to serve and directly
impact people’s lives. I can confidently say I have started enjoying nursing profession. Being a nurse is
such a blessing, patients often pray for me whenever I treat them with best care. That makes me feel
special and I am so desperate to keep on improving my skills and expertise in this highly esteemed career.
One of the main challenges we are facing in my country, Rwanda is lack of Primary Health Care
specialists. On top of that, I was born and raised in a rural area where most people are still deprived of
proper medical services. I strongly believe I can contribute to solving these problems by pursuing a
Master of Nursing at Montclair State University and bring back the skills after graduation to serve and
improve the health of the people in my community.

Upon completion of my high school studies, I was fortunate enough to be awarded the Government of
Rwanda Presidential Scholarship in recognition to being one of the top performers in Science related
courses at national level. The scholarship was for studying General Nursing program at the University of
Rwanda-College of Nursing and Health Sciences. This program enabled me to acquire skills related to
nursing practice such as Medical Surgical nursing, Fundamental of nursing, Medical pathology and
Pharmacology. Furthermore, I have been attached to several hospitals where I worked as a professional
intern during my Undergraduate program. The hospital attachments trained me about practicing possible
assessment to elaborate patient’s health problems, follow up and management of patient in intensive care
unit and assessing Hypertension and Health Disparities in Children. Most importantly, in my final year in
college I worked at the health center near my town and my daily duties was to assess health and wellness
of vulnerable populations including low-income families, adults with HIV/AIDS.

My Senior Research Project was to Assess prevalence and factors associated with Pregnancy Induced
Hypertension among women attending antenatal care. I appreciated this research topic because
Pregnancy-induced hypertension is a significant public health threat in developing countries contributing
to high maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. This research was a combination of challenges
and learning as well as a good opportunity to interact and advise women with no formal education about
pregnancy induced hypertension.

After graduation, I have been working as a Registered nurse at Kirehe District hospital in the department
of internal medicine. I am now an experienced healthcare provider with capacity to work without
supervision. My daily duties include providing direct patient care by working with other nurses and staff
to improve the quality of care a patient receives. I am additionally required to educate patients and the
public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their
family members especially those with chronic diseases. During my spare time, I often volunteer in
Community outreach program which involves testing for chronic disease like HIV/ AIDS, diabetes,
hypertension, cancer especially women with breast and cervical cancer. I participate in these activities
because I am passionate about health and well-being and enjoy caring for people.

With my background, experience and future goals, I am keen to apply for a Master Program in Nursing at
Montclair State University. I have chosen this university because it is dedicated to providing the highest
quality training with the use of new technologies and equipment. Additionally, I will benefit world class
research facilities and learn from world-renowned professors at Montclair State University. My long term
goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) so I can provide health care services to patients in
need. I am fascinated to complete this program at your university and look forward to performing
physical exams, prescribe medications and treat acute and chronic illnesses, among other duties. I am
fully prepared to attend a Master program in Nursing at Montclair State University with my diligence,
alacrity and tireless chase to the medical profession. I have made my decision and now I look forward to
yours.
