1. The estimated resident population is based on the census usually resident population count, updated for
residents missed or counted more than once by the census (net census undercount); residents temporarily
overseas on census night; and births, deaths, and net migration between census night and the date of the
estimate.
2. Natural increase plus net migration. Up to June 2018, population estimates also include an intercensal
adjustment which reflects errors in the census-based estimates and/or components of change. The adjustment
is calculated at the end of each intercensal period.
3. Excess of births over deaths. Births and deaths have been estimated by date of occurrence. They differ
from births and deaths registered over the same period.
4. Net migration is the difference between the number of migrant arrivals and departures. A minus sign denotes an
excess of departures over arrivals. These migration estimates may differ slightly from other published migration
estimates because of differences in the timing of when the migration estimates are calculated.
5. Data are provisional until the duration of stay/absence can be calculated definitively, about 6 quarters
after the reference period.

Note: Population estimates are revised following each Census of Population and Dwellings. The difference between annual population
change and the sum of natural increase (births less deaths) and net migration is due to intercensal adjustments.
Due to rounding, individual figures may not always sum to the stated total(s). All derived figures have
been calculated using data of greater precision than published.
