Resistive Highlights
Advantages Value solution Activated by any stylus High touch point resolution Low power requirements Disadvantages Reduced optical clarity Polyester surface can be damaged Lower endurance (35 million touches)
Optical Highlights
Advantages Clear nothing between viewer and display Multi-touch capability Can scale to large sizes Disadvantages Optical scanners can get out of alignment in high vibration environments Larger bezel gap due to the optical scanners mounted in the corners of the display
SAW Technology
Advantages
Made of durable glass construction High optical clarity Activated by a finger, gloved hand, or soft tip stylus Proven technology in the marketplace
Disadvantages
Moving liquids or condensation can cause false touches or create a no touch condition Solid contaminants create non-touch areas until completely removed
Capacitive Technology
Advantages
Works with contaminants and moving liquids on the screen human touch need eliminates false touches from other objects Tested to withstand 225 million mechanical touches w/o noticeable degradation to the surface.
Disadvantages
Requires bare finger or capacitive stylus Severe scratch can affect operation within the damaged area
Durability Stylus independent Easy to clean Price Stylus independent Price Multi-touch capability Durability #1 concern Ease of clean Kiosk environments

Driving Factors
Patient information security Employee shortages Adoption of technology-related solutions Transition from paper to electronic patient records
Best: 5-wire Resistive (activated by a finger, gloved hand, credit card or pen, but membrane overlay may develop wear spots over time) Very Good: SAW (activated by finger, gloved hand or soft stylus and is durable due to glass construction) Good: Capacitive (durable glass construction, but must be activated by a human touch) Good: Optical (all glass construction, highly accurate, economical, but optical scanners can get out of alignment in high vibration environment and bezel gap is larger to accommodate the scanners)
Fast, accurate touch High endurance Stable 24/7 Sealability Stylus independence
