1. Why do students need to understand academic texts? What can be the

implications if one does not know how to interact with academic texts?

Academic text is defined as critical, objective, specialized texts written

by experts or professionals in a given field using formal language.
Understanding academic texts will help the students to avoid mistakes and
improve their writing, leading into a professional based text. Students
might have complication with making formal writing, understand context,
analyzing statements, finding facts, and providing solid evidences if one
does not know how to interact with academic texts. As it was stated by
Erickson, Peters & Strommer (2006), Reading academic texts written by
certain disciplinary experts helps learners to indulge themselves in the
culture of the discipline and learning facilities its principles, discussion,
skills and knowledge. Nevertheless, understanding academic texts will give
better foundation in the world of English, perhaps, students might use it
on their chosen professions.
